Tuesday Open Thread [12.13.11]

Republicans are truly amazing in that they just cannot help themselves. If they found a candidate who was half way likeable, half way competent, and who sounded populist tones (kind of like Sarah Palin but with a brain), they might win this election going away. Instead, they have as their choice two unlikeable monsters who are filthy rich and are racing to see which one can make life on easy street more easy.

UPDATED: Why do I have to stumble over these truths?

Tune on out if you are sick of me talking about how shitty our congressional delegation is. Still with me? Well I’d like the answer to a few questions after you read this:

‘Bulo’s 2011 Top 10 MVPs (Most Valuable to the Progressive Cause)

2011 was a mixed year for progressivism in Delaware. We saw tremendous strides on social issues, especially equal rights for all Delawareans. We also saw the ongoing embrace between prominent D elected officials and the Billionaires on the Hill, to the detriment of the other 99%. We saw the emergence of the ‘We Are the 99%’ movement via OWS which, nationally was the best thing to happen for the progressive cause since 1964. We saw ongoing corruption, inbreeding and cronyism in the Delaware General Assembly. We saw the first legitimate attempts to challenge the rot at the core of the Delaware Way.

Staton could be the beneficiary of teabag paranoia run amok

Chad Livengood’s story about the GOP primary for the 6th senate seat did a good job identifying the players and revealing the dynamic that could help Staton prevail in the 6th.

Okay. Delaware Dem is right. Let it please be Newt.

President Obama would absolutly CRUSH newt in the general election. Please FSM, let it be Newt. Why the change of heart? It has been a hell of a bad day to be Newt Gingrich.

Monday Open Thread [12.12.11]

NBC/Marist also has polls out showing Newt crushing Romney in South Carolina and Florida. But these polls also show President Obama crushing Gingrich by 12 in Florida and by 4 in South Carolina. Yes, President Obama would win South Carolina if the election were held today.

Matt Denn Hires the Devil (in a figurativly speaking, guilt by association kind of way)

That headline is a little blogger hyperbole. I’m not saying that everyone who has worked for Tom Carper is tainted and should never be hired by anyone ever again, but… well.. yes I am saying that.

A bleak holiday season start for Hollywood

Film industry watchers have speculated that audiences are staying away from theaters because, given the present economy, they have lost their appetite for garbage.

Donald Trump now regarded by RWNJs as an Obama Double Agent

Too funny. In the sticky and damp world of the RWNJ conspiracy theorists, President Obama is capable of literally anything. Including…. wait for it… using Donald Trump as a “trojan horse” to make the GOP look bad by bringing back up birtherism while baiting “none of the above” minded Republicans with possibility of a third party campaign.

“Plan B” & Team Obama Strategy

I certainly don’t get it. Team Obama’s strategic thinking behind the decision to overrule the FDA is either nonexistent or so crazily idiosyncratic as to be nonexistent.

Sunday Open Thread [12.11.11]

Critics have long complained that instead of sticking to strong positions on issues such as immigration, federal spending, and health care reform, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has routinely changed his stance to appeal to voters. Here are some key policies on which he has flip-flopped:

Rush Limbaugh is right about one thing

I watched a little of the Republican debate and I hate to admit it, but Rush Limbaugh is right when he says that Gingrich could give Obama more of a race than Romney. Romney leaves everybody flat. Newt is full of zingers and is always spoiling for a fight. Newt could win the moderates who say things like, “I don’t agree with him on much, but the guy has moxie.” or “I just like him.”

John Carney: To be a Democrat, or a second rate Tom Carper? That is the question.

We already have a guy who has pissed away his career cravenly sucking up to Republicans and corporations, do we really need another? Delaware would love an actual Democrat right now. You could be a hero, or second rate Tom Carper. From a “what is right” perspective, as well as a strategic perspective, this seems like a no brainer to me. The only problem is, with your current “bi-partisanship rulz!” PR campaign going on, I fear you’ve already made the wrong choice.

‘Bulo To Unveil His 2011 MVP List Tuesday, Dec. 13…

…and for the first time, it will be simultaneously released here at DL and on the Al Mascitti Show. We’re talking 10 a.m., folks, here and on WDEL-1150 AM. I’m putting my magnum opus together now, and it will be fraught with both fun and controversy. I’ve gotten more comfortable with my list as I’ve prepared it. Of course, I’ve changed my initial list twice now already, and I’m likely not done fiddling with it.

God is My Abortionist

I’m not sure if the “God is my abortionist” defense would work in the American Christian Taliban world of the future. That’s not stopping baby factory & reality TV star, Michelle Duggar, from using it.

Can crowd sourced mockery of GOP lunacy compensate for not owning cable news networks?

Anyway, the left has virtually nothing. No candidates, no money, no cable TV news networks. All we have is youtube and daily kos. Is that enough?

Tiny Tony to Sen. Bonini: “Merry Xmas From Da Godfadda!”

You may remember the undistinguished Bonini pissed (and perhaps ate) away his shot at State Treasurer and, about a month later, flipped his vote to give Tony DeLuca the number needed to hang on to his spot as President Pro-Tempore. You may also remember the undistinguished Bonini as the ‘fiscal watchdog’ who ripped off the state’s taxpayers by not showing up for his job on the Joint Sunset Committee, yet still getting paid for it. As punishment for Bonini ripping off the taxpayers, noted ‘double-dipper’ Tiny Tony DeLuca, inexplicably the President Pro-Tempore of the Delaware State Senate, has given Colin Bonini a promotion. To the Capital Improvements Committee, or ‘Bond Bill’ Committee.
