The Gingrich collapse is not the same as the Perry, Cain and Bachmann collapse. Indeed, it already looks like he is rebounding.

A Return to the Gilded Age or just mere selfishness?

“They call themselves conservatives but that’s not it, either. They don’t want to conserve what we now have. They’d rather take the country backwards – before the 1960s and 1970s, and the Environmental Protection Act, Medicare, and Medicaid; before the New Deal, and its provision for Social Security, unemployment insurance, the forty-hour workweek, and official recognition of trade unions; even before the Progressive Era, and the first national income tax, antitrust laws, and Federal Reserve.”

Newt Tells Gay Voter to Vote for Obama

If you’re a gay American, don’t vote for Newt Gingrich. That’s not a Democratic talking point — that’s reportedly what Newt himself said to a gay man in Iowa Tuesday.

A Reverse Braveheart

It is amazing that the GOP decided to assist President Obama in his campaign narrative that GOP is only interested in protecting the rich and obstructing the President, all the while the middle class needs help in a sluggish economy. He has doing good in that regard this fall, as recent polls released yesterday. But now he gets an amazing assist in having his opposition actually perform the role he would have them play, and to perfection.

Pew’s Political Typology 2011

A new poll! But this is one you take to see where you stand politically on a new political typology developed by (or maybe refined by) the people at the Pew Center for People and the Press. This is meant to get beyond the labels of red and Blue.

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT ON THE PAYROLL TAX CUT

Some good framing here. It all depends on President Obama and Harry Reid not blinking. If we know anything about he future based on past experiences, it is that President Obama and Harry Reid will blink.

Thought of the Day

If the House Republicans allow the middle class tax cut to expire, the House will be in Democratic hands this time next year.

Going Up.

It is usually after confrontations with the horribly ignorant that I despair for this country and the human race. And then I see polls that make me happy and prove me right at the same time. CNN just released its latest public opinion survey with new approval numbers for President Obama. The numbers are 49% approval and 48% disapproval. This is almost identical to the numbers just released by a new ABC/Washington Post poll, that has President Obama at 49% approval vs. 47% disapproval.

War on Christmas Triva

What unusual distinction is shared by these Christmas-y songs? “The Christmas Song,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Silver Bells,” “White Christmas” and, in part, “Sleigh Ride” and “Winter Wonderland”?

Game playing and “manufacturing crises” by “Tea Party Republicans” called out by John Carney

There is a lot to like in this short statement by John Carney on the House Republicans plan to oppose the tax cut extension passed 89-10 by the Senate.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative John Carney (D-DE) released the following statement tonight after House Republicans announced their intention to vote down a payroll tax cut extension passed overwhelmingly by the Senate:

“Tomorrow, House Republicans intend to vote down a payroll tax cut passed overwhelmingly by Senate. Tea Party Republicans are playing games and manufacturing crises.

“The bill passed by the Senate isn’t perfect, but it ensures that middle class families don’t receive a tax hike in January, and it gives us time to pass a broader package. I hope that House Republicans come to their senses — and soon.”

That pretty much hits…

Carney statement on Afghanistan hits the right notes

Congressman John Carney recently went to Afghanistan. Upon his return he released this statement. [In anything like this, there is usually a bunch of congratulating the troops on doing such a great, professional job. There is some of that, but not as much as I'd expect. Anyway, I'll cut that stuff out and just post the meat.]

Globalization has worked. Now what?

The answer is…be a part of the plutocratic 1% and enjoy unimaginable wealth, or be a part of the technocratic 2% and enjoy very impressive wealth, or be a part of the impoverished 97%. The outlook for the American style, post-war, semi-affluent middle class is pretty dang bleak.

Monday Open Thread [12.19.11]

Republicans sure are a fickle lot. I see now that Gingrich is coming back to Earth and now Ron Paul is the flavor of the month. With the latest Public Policy Polling survey showing Newt Gingrich fading fast in Iowa, Nate Silver’s forecasting model gives Ron Paul a 44% chance of winning Iowa, Mitt Romney a 32% chance of winning, while Gingrich’s chances have sunk to just 15%.

So Much for Checks and Balances

Apparently Newt Gingrich doesn’t believe in our system of checks and balances.
Continuing his crusade against the courts, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich railed against judges “imposing secularism” on the country on this morning’s Face The Nation. Arguing that “activist judges” who make disagreeable decisions should be held accountable before Congress, he told Bob Schieffer that [...]
