From The GOP To America

Filed in National by on December 21, 2011

Rep. Phil Gingrey of Georgia, talking to The Hill about the payroll tax cut fight:

“Everybody else said, ‘Look, this is a ‘Braveheart’ moment. You, Mr. Speaker, are our William Wallace. Let’s rush to the fight. Get us back to Washington, let’s get to our work and we’re doing that.’ “

America, this is what the GOP is saying to you:

  1. Liberal Elite says:

Braveheart? Not even close… The GOP is on the other side supporting the wealthy nobles.

    I like this analogy better:

“This is like the third day of the decisive battle of Gettysburg which saved the Union. The Tea Party just did a political re-enactment of “Pickets Charge”, confederate infantry with rebel cries doing a suicidal attack against Union artillery, canisters and infantry musket fire. All the while, Boehner is playing the character of confederate general Longstreet, whom looked on in horror at the coming slaughter but unable to stop it.”

Nothing brave about telling 160 million Americans to go fuck themselves.

I see I am conflicted about the payroll tax cuts. On the one hand, I don’t think there is anything brave about Democrats peddling the Republican meme that “taxes are punishment” and “tax cuts create jobs.”

On the other hand, I am salivating for an Obama win that leaves Republicans broken. I just don’t know how we got to the point that we now consider tax cuts a win. I don’t remember “payroll taxes too high” was ever much of a campaign issue. To me it looks like Democrats are simply raiding the last healthy revenue stream in America.

What do we do after the payroll cuts pass? Say “Take that, you Republicans! Now behave, or we will cut taxes again! And if it continues, you will get the COMFY CHAIR!!”

  4. MJ says:

Didn’t William Wallace have his head chopped off? Just saying………..

  5. Geezer says:

    Drawn and quartered, too.

  6. Jason330 says:

The best thing about this fight is that we don’t have Congressman Micheal Newbold Castle going around making a sad face about how he wished everybody could just get along.

  7. SussexAnon says:

    Boehner is also like:

    A) General Custer cause he was awesome n stuff. Til that last stand.
    B) Napoleon cause he took on Europe n stuff. Til Waterloo.
    C) William Wallace cause he took on England n stuff. Til he was drawn n quartered.
    C) A weeping willow.
    D) All of the above.

Perhaps Newtie could give the house a history lesson. Both about William Wallace and how well shutting down the gov’t worked for Newt.

  8. anonone says:

Still, it is kind of refreshing to see the House tell the Senate where to stick it. I wish Nancy had tried that a few times back in the day.

  9. puck says:

It’s true. When the Senate and Obama told Nancy to jump, she didn’t exactly say “How high?” but she did make it cleanly through whatever hoop the conservadems were holding for her.
