Media Fail
James Fallows calls out the media. Go read the whole thing. Fallows is correct. Our media narrative is a huge problem.

Prior to High School – I wasn’t a reader. I was offered a bunch of books by my reading parents, but didn’t read a whole novel from front to back until I was a Junior at good ole Dover High School.
High School – My junior year I read “A Catcher in the Rye” and [...]
My Beer History – FWIW
High School – I drank whatever beer someone handed to me as I stood shivering in the woods somewhere. Probably Bud.
College – What ever was cheapest. Usually Busch. Many 12 packs were consumed over card games on our end of Prospect Ave.
Recent College Grad (early work years) – [...]

Anita Perry said that she could sympathize with unemployed people because her son Griffin had to resign his job at a bank in order to campaign for his father, Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
“I’m just sympathizing. Let me tell you. Our son has resigned his job because of the federal regulations Washington has put [...]
Lavelle for Senate?
When I first read the headline of Dialogue Delaware’s recent story about Minority Leader Greg Lavelle’s predicament, “Lavelle Mulling Senate Bid,” I was confused. I thought for a brief moment the Republican Party had actually done something right and Lavelle was actually considering challenging Tom Carper. Well, maybe he is….
15Oct2011 | Delaware Dem | 9 comments | ContinuedThe “Lord’s Resistance Army” Sounds Like Something Teabag Republicans Would Approve Of
President Obama just announced that we are sending about 100 U.S. troops to Africa to help hunt down the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army. The Wikipedia article on the Lord’s Resistance Army says that the group is based on apocalyptic Protestant Christianity. It is led by Joseph Kony, who proclaims himself the “spokesperson” of God sent to earth to establish a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments. Sound familiar?
The LRA is accused of widespread human rights violations, including murder, abduction, mutilation, sexual enslavement of women and children and forcing children to participate in hostilities.
But, you know… God told them, so….

Friday Open Thread [10.14.11]
A new Economist/YouGov poll finds Herman Cain leading the Republican presidential field with 33%, followed by Mitt Romney at 18%, Rick Perry at 10%, Newt Gingrich at 9%, Ron Paul at 7%, Jon Huntsman at 4% and Michele Bachmann at 3%. I am still just stunned. Racist teabaggers hate Romney so much that they are going to vote for a black man. I just love it. Meanwhile, John McCain is bad at math…. and lying.

Dover Councilman Committed to Offensive Material
As a private citizen, David Andersen can be as determined to be offensive as he wants to be. As a Representative of the City of Dover, I would think that Andersen could rethink this position.
14Oct2011 | jason330 | 71 comments | Continued“The piece trivializes the Holocaust. It draws inappropriate comparisons that offend the sensibilities of Holocaust survivors and those who appreciate the gravity of one of the most tragic episodes in human history,” read the letter to Anderson, signed by ADL regional director Barry Morrison.
Anderson maintains that the video, posted Sept. 20 by site contributor Fay Voshell of Wilmington, has nothing to do with the Holocaust.
Cohen Makes Flirty Eyes at Kovach

In Search of “Delaware Style” Clam Chowder
There is not such thing as Delaware Style clam chowder. That’s the point. There should be. Delaware needs a cultural identity beyond being the “Usury State.” (Thanks Carper, you f*cker!) With our proximity to New Jersey, we are in danger of being culturally dominated by hair gel abusing douche-bags. Also, did you know what visitors to this state are greeted with when they stop at the new I-95 rest area? Crabs. Crabs! Like we are some kind of ersatz Maryland. F*ck that! To get the ball rolling, here are some things we need to have our own cultural identity. Click through….

Thursday Open Thread [10.13.11]
I already cited the Time Magazine poll showing how President Obama is doing against the top three Republican contenders. We have also already see the PPP poll showing Cain talking the lead in the GOP race. Now we have a new NBC/WSJ poll released today also showing Cain as the new frontrunner also finds President Obama leading the field. He beats Cain by a 49%-38% margin, Romney by a 46%-44% margin, and Perry by a 51%-39% margin.
13Oct2011 | Delaware Dem | 16 comments | ContinuedCrossing the Line
We’ve all done it. We here at DL, and our friends over at DP have both crossed the line from time to time when putting up posts. The most recent incident occurred a couple of weeks ago when Fay Voshell put up a post at DP that she thought was funny. The post included a video from a movie that included Hitler in it. Except in Fay’s version, Hitler was really President Obama and his advisors were telling him that the Attack Watch website was a failure.
I took exception to the video, in the comments section of Fay’s post and here. And we are not blameless, as back in 2008, we ran a blog post using the very same video to mock the downfall of the economy during W’s regime. (This was before my time here as a contributor).
I find any post that mock’s the Holocaust extremely unsettling. I lost relatives in the camps. My family only found out this information after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening of archives in East Germany and the old Soviet Union. Aunts, uncles, and cousins who decided to stay in Eastern Europe when the rest of my family immigrated between 1892-1907 perished.
And now, the Anti-Defamation League has weighed in. In a letter sent to David Anderson, the ADL has advised him that the use of the video was inappropriate.

Coons, Carper, Carney Divided on Free Trade Votes
Our Delaware congressional delegation found itself divided on the issue of free trade yesterday. All three, Senators Coons and Carper and Representative Carney, voted for the free trade deals with South Korea and Panama. And to their credit, those deals look to actually be fair and good deals. The third deal with Columbia? Not so much.

Checking in on the President
The Obama Campaign raised $70 million last quarter ending September 30. 98% of that was from donors giving less than $250, with an average donation of $56. A new Time Magazine poll shows that despite a 44% approval rating and negative feelings about the country’s direction, the President leads new GOP frontrunner Herman Cain 49% to 37% in a new poll, as well as two other plausible nominees: 46-43 over Romney and 50-38 over Perry.

Remembering Matthew Shepard
Thirteen years ago tonight, Matthew Shepard died from a beating at the hands of two homophobes. Although both were convicted and faced the death penalty, it was through the grace of Judy and Dennis Shepard that their lives were spared. Matthew was targeted for this beating because he was gay. He was taken to a desolate spot outside of Laramie, Wyoming, tortured and beaten, and left for dead. When his body was discovered, the person finding him thought he was looking at a scarecrow.
On October 28, 2009, President Obama signed into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hate Crimes Act, in memory of two victims of hate crimes that were murdered in 1998. For those who think the we’ve come a long way since Matthew’s death, you’re wrong. Hate crimes against gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals continue to rise, especially in major metropolitan areas. Just last month, a DC police officers was arrested for assaulting a transgender woman. We must never forget Matthew Shepard, James Byrd, and the hundreds of other victims of hate crimes that have been murdered. Never Again!!!

Cain Leads
A new Public Policy Polling survey finds Herman Cain leading Mitt Romney in the GOP presidential race nationally, 30% to 22%, with Newt Gingrich at 15% and Rick Perry at 14%. Now, if somehow Cain wins both Iowa and New Hampshire and then South Carolina, he may very well steam roll towards the nomination. I just can’t see it. But this little boomlet has been sustained for several weeks now, so maybe, just maybe, Cain is really in this thing.
