UPDATE & THANK YOU ! DelawareLiberal Action to Help Support Occupy Wall Street – Live Blog

Monday October 10th, – 7:48pm

What a day… Huge thank you’s to everyone! Too many to list right now.

My first reactions… Everything you’ve heard about the gentle-spiritedness of this is true. I witnessed a bunch of Americans being the civic minded Americans that we are meant to be. Protesters, cops, journalists, all American patriots doing their thing.

Everything you heard about this being anti-capitalist is a bunch of hooey. Everyone I saw seemed to be expressing a desire to return to the kind prosperity that was built on the notion that we are all in this together. A prosperity that does not simply materially enrich a few – but on a much deeper level enriches us all.

More on this tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Monday October 10th, 2011

We’re off. I’m looking forward to meeting some of you today. Liberalgeek and I will try to update this thread when we can. You can also get periodic updates by tuning into WDEL this morning, as we’ll be calling into Al Mascitti’s show now and then.

If you have BLANKETS, RAIN PONCHO, GLOVES, JACKETS, etc… Bring them down to:

  • Sussex – The Lewes Library @ 10:00am
  • Kent – Legislative Hall Main Entrance @ 11:00am, and
  • New Castle – The Shipyard Shops (the roundabout) @12:00

Saturday October 8th, 2011

We have our pick up times, and our donation wranglers. We have some donation lined up. We have our wheels and I have my post it note reminding me to bring my easy pass. If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning.

What we don’t have, is a real clear sense of how this is going to work once we get to Manhattan. In the action oriented spirit of this protest, we are still going for it – but if anybody has any first hand knowledge of what the receiving operation in OWS is like, I’d be eager to hear it.

What we still need:

1) Whatever you do, sign this petition: http://www.getmoneyout.com/ Democrats are getting a little spine because they can count.

2) More pledges of supplies. (You know you have an old coat. Bring it to one of the three collection points on Monday morning. (see below))
3) A little more press(?). I’m not sure about this. We have a call in to Al Mascitti’s show lined up, but maybe some local press would be good? Maybe not. I’m not a huge fan of any of the Delaware Newspapers.
4) There is no number four unless you think of something that we are forgetting and want to put in the comments section.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Important Reminder:

The DL community is going to fill an SUV with donated sleeping bags and/or blankets, yoga mats and tarps* and drive up to New York where we will deliver them on behalf of everyone in Delaware who thinks that the corporate takeover of our democracy requires a response.

We’ll be picking up donated items in the following locations:

  • Sussex – The Lewes Library @ 10:00am
  • Kent – Legislative Hall Main Entrance @ 11:00am, and
  • New Castle – The Shipyard Shops (the roundabout) @12:00

1) Think about whether you can volunteer to organize donations at one of the three pickup location on the morning of the 10th.
2) Help us find a very up to date and complete list of the occupiers genuine needs.
3) Spread the word. Twitter (the hash tag is: #DE2WallSt) , Facebook, Semiphore flags…

* As of the writing of this, these are the items that were being requested. If the needs change between now and Monday morning, we’ll update the list.

Comment Rescue:

The Occupy Delaware movement seems to be growing. They’re holding their second General Assembly meeting on 10/12 at 7PM at the UAW hall on Old Baltimore Pike in Newark. They also now have a Twitter feed (@OccupyDelaware), a Facebook page (facebook.com/occupyDE) and a YouTube channel, which now has the videos of the first General Assembly meeting.

I’ve seen posts on Reddit about their meetings and it looks as if the Facebook page has about 300 people paying attention. Not bad considering they just started three days ago.

I’ll be wo-manning the Shipyard Shops with El Som. I should be there around 11 am. I will be positioned at the end of the roundabout (Near Timothy’s) closest to the river. Can’t wait to see everyone!

If anybody asks what this is all about – here is a pretty good primer:

I think that Blue Gal in DE also volunteered to help out if needed….

  4. puck says:

I can’t make it to the NCC site today. Sorry I’ll miss the scene, but I ordered some sleeping bags sent to the OWS physical mailing address:

thank you all so much for you help, we use and need it all! if you would like to send us funds please send MONEY ORDERS not checks- we are unable to cash checks at this point! also please only send non-perishable goods, luckily we are able to receive packages of any size 😉

Good news is the long range weather forecast shows nighttime lows mostly in the 50s and even 60s for the next 30 days.

I’ll be donating to the local #occupydelaware too.

Also we need to be ready for a second round of donation when stuff gets wrecked by rain, or taken in police sweeps.

  5. Jason330 says:

Leaving Lewes with some great coats and sleeping bags.

  6. Jason330 says:

Just crossed back into Kent Co

  7. pandora says:

El Som and I will be setting up at the Riverfront in approx. 15 minutes! Drive safely, guys.

  8. Jaspn330 says:

Awesome. They just did a quick news mention on WDEL.

  9. pandora says:

Actually, they’ve mentioned you A LOT!

I’m out the door. Hopefully, we’ll have a big turn out!

  10. Miscreant says:

Have fun, and be careful not to get co-opted by the commies or the Democratic Party.

  11. pandora says:

FYI: Justison Street is blocked near Timothy’s. Take a right and
go behind the Chase center. We are here!

  12. cassandra m says:

Now you’re trying to use the Washington Times as authoritative information?

Keep it up. We’ll be sure to tell you when you’ve left the realm of absolutely pathetic.

  13. Miscreant says:

“Now you’re trying to use the Washington Times as authoritative information?”

Somehow I couldn’t find any reference to it at your source for accurate news, talking points, and information, the Daily Kos.

The CPUSA are having a teleconference having a teleconference about it:

Tuesday, October 11, 8 pm Eastern
    Teleconference number: 605-474-4850

    http://www.cpusa.org/solidarity-with-occupy-wall-street-teleconference-oct-11/

Join in, I’m sure they would find you very *useful*.

  14. Jason330 says:

Just passing over the canal. ETA in wilmo. 12:15

  15. cassandra m says:

And now you’re down to comparing the Washington Tines with dKos. It’s only wingnuts reaching for *something* just *something* to diss people with who create comparisons that only wingnuts will even see. So just go back to your tribe where they’ll think you’re brilliant.

Over here, you’re still absolutely pathetic and we’ll tell you when you aren’t.

  16. cassandra m says:

And I think it is hilariously telling that OWS opponents need to invoke *Communists* to ratchet up the fear factor. Which may still have some power to scare amongst certain of our elderly population.

So run off to the cafeteria, Mis. They may be serving applesauce for lunch today!

  17. puck says:

When these guys get back from dropping off our donations I plan to start asking our Delaware delegation if they stand with the 1% or the 99%. So far every indication is that they stand with the 1%, but we need to know if #occupy* has clarified the issue for them.

Of course I’ll need to phrase my question in terms of specific legislation.

What bills in the pipeline represent the interests of the 99%? I guess the jobs bill comes closest.

  18. Atlas says:

“Make $350-650 a week “protesting” on Wall Street.”

    http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/gov/2618821815.html

  19. Miscreant says:

You seem to preoccupied with convoluted meaningless responses, and shallow invectives, Cassandra. It’s almost as if that’s all you have.

“So run off to the cafeteria, Mis. They may be serving applesauce for lunch today!”

Is this about someone’s perceived age?
    Really? Talk about “pathetic”.

  20. cassandra m says:

Hey Mr. Communist — you started with the meaningless responses and shallow invectives way back when you were responding to Dana. Small wonder that you are threatened by someone pointing out that You’ve Got Nothing.

If you don’t want to *be* the pathetic old guy, you should stop acting like the pathetic old guy, right? So run off to your Cold War flashbacks now.

  21. Just back from the Riverfront. Jason and Geek have a full SUV to take up to NYC. Thanks to EVERYONE who contributed! If we had a couple of weeks, we could fill a truck.

We were interviewed and photographed by WHYY’s Mark Fauser, so you might want to check out their site.

A special thank you to Sen. Dave Sokola for coming by to lend his support for the effort. Dave is one of the very few proud progressives in the Delaware General Assembly. Tony DeLuca has redistricted him in an attempt to get rid of him. We cannot allow that to happen. He won’t have corporate support, so it’s up to the other 99% of us to back him.

Of course, a special thanks to Jason330 and Liberal Geek, who really coordinated the effort. Oh, and of course, the lovely and mysterious Pandora. I’ve always been proud to belong to DL, but today I’m especially proud.

  22. Joe Cass says:

In New Castle(the Riverfront):El Som, Pandora and XStryker were there maintaining a high level of enthusiasm along with a state Senator Sokola (i could be wrong) and a reporter from WHYY.
LiberalGeek and Jason drove north with a SUV under capacity. I hope we can deliver more the next time around. I hope we can deliver to the needy here in own state as well.
To the lady and gents I just met: thank you for what you are doing and being open to all the voices, some harmonious and some that require a physical adjustment.

  23. puck says:

I haven’t been listening to the radio but the DL supply run is now on wdel.com, complete with an audio quote from Jason:

    http://wdel.com/story.php?id=38116

    Nice work DL’ers!

  24. anon says:

Puck: Two bills will be in the pipeline in January. John Kowalko and Earl Jacques will have two bills:

    1) A single payer health care system.
    2) Campaign Finance Reform.

http://www.occupy-delaware.com will be supporting both, as do 32 statewide organizations.

If saw the Norman Oliver show on Chan.28 last night with Karen Weldin Stewart, you would clearly understand WHY single payer in Delaware is more important than ever.

  25. flutecake says:

It was nice to see Liberalgeek again & meet Jason face to face! We had a light turn out in Kent Co. But eager. Thanks for mounting this effort! I hope to get up to NCC to meet more of you!

  26. Joe Cass says:

@Flutecake, your efforts will be appreciated! We all always want every citizen to reach and lend for democracy but you are one, we are two and we have DelawareLiberal.net and it goes on & on. One pebble, a landslide; one snowflake, an avalanche; one voice, a chorus!

  27. puck says:

    1) A single payer health care system.
    2) Campaign Finance Reform.

Good point. I was thinking more of Coons/Carney/Carper, since their votes influence the national economy on which Delaware depends – are they for the 1% or the 99%? But it is also important to think locally.

  28. Dana Garrett says:

What you folks at DL are doing is wonderful. So glad that you are undaunted by the miserable right. You got well deserved publicity today. Congradts.

  29. pandora says:

It was great seeing everyone, and thanks to all who donated! The SUV was packed by the time Jason and Geek pulled out.

  30. Atlas says:

an SUV?! an EVIL gas guzzeling, carbon spewing, planet destroying SUV! was the prius in the shop?

This is why it is impossible to parody you trust fund liberals, you are a parody in motion.

  31. pandora says:

Um… it was the Prius SUV. Does it get tiring looking like idiot?

  32. Joe Cass says:

yeah, but I’ve got no trust fund and no steady employment. Would you like to make an appointment with me in New Castle to discuss parody?
I can exhibit the fluidity of motion, also Force (or weight) = Mass × Acceleration
    I’m free in the afternoons

  33. Atlas says:

Wow, a Prius SUV… I knew Toyota was planning to launch one in 2014… I didn’t realize it came with a time travel option. Mommy and Daddy buy you kids all the best toys.

  34. pandora says:

I’m not a car nut, so I looked up images and it looked like the Toyota Highlander – the owner can clarify later. Either way, you still look like an idiot.

  35. puck says:

It’s apparently a hybrid SUV. That’s all the info you are getting on DL vehicles, troll-boy.

  36. pandora says:

    Thank you, puck.

  37. pandora says:

Just received a call from Jason330. He says that they just dropped the supplies off and the scene is crazy – in a good way. Tons of protestors, lots of tourists, and the police were pretty cool about them dropping stuff off. The organizers were very, very appreciative!

Thanks again to LG and Jason! You guys rock!

And, thanks again to everyone who helped fill the SUV!

  38. Heckyeah says:

What’s so bad about communism? Also, is it possible for some of you not to be so vehemently partisan about this? We should be reaching out to the other side here, not acting like the snotty over-educated twatmonkies they see us as.

  39. Here’s the feed from WHYY and Newsworks:

    http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/delaware/item/28036-delaware-supporters-send-supplies-to-wall-street-occupiers

Thanks to Mark Fowser for covering this. Also, thanks to WDEL for covering the story and Al Mascitti for strongly speaking up for the Occupy Wall Street movement.

  40. Republican David says:

    Commie Libs

  41. Auntie Dem says:

Did somebody call out the silly twits today? Or is it just that this OWS thing is scaring the beedoobers out of our conservative friends? Their comments are incoherent or silly or both. We need a trollminator.

  42. puck says:

Two data points from the news:

Occupy Wall Street Protests Rankle the Rich (good!)

    and,

Income for young college grads down almost 10 percent since 2000

That last one kind of makes me want to ask Chris Coons if he is ready to start reconsidering his recent statement:

“We frankly need to be willing to negotiate some responsible changes in terms of future beneficiaries – you know folks frankly who are under 40,” Coons said.

  43. cassandra m says:

Nice job, everyone! I’m sorry I missed the Riverfront fun so I guess I owe Pandora lunch at Harry’s Seafood another time.

For our readers who didn’t make it to any of the collection points, there is an opportunity to contribute to or support the Occupy Philadelphia crew who are trying to get ready for rain this week. This post over at Crooks and Liars gives you the details.

AND Occupy Delaware should be firing up soon, so there will be a chance to support that effort then.

(When Comrade Miscreant shows his sorry behind over here be sure to ask him if he remembers how to duck and cover. Because if you don’t stop them here, the rest will fall like dominos. Or something like that.)

  44. You can still donate to the OWS cause (can’t find link right now). I’m planning on going to the Occupy Delaware meeting on Wednesday. I feel like I’ve been waiting for something like this all my life. I hope this really leads to an energized and active left.

  45. puck says:

James O’Keefe identified, videotaped at #OWS.

  46. Miscreant says:

“When Comrade Miscreant shows his … ”

Thanks, Cass. I may use that as my new screen name.

  47. liberalgeek says:

For the haters, the Ford Escape Hybrid got about 35mpg during the 450 mile trek today. It was truly awesome to be a part of this today. Thanks to all that contributed and those that just came out to say hello.

  48. I hope Jason and lg will post pictures and a story about their experience yesterday. I’m seeing a bunch of reports of mass arrests in Boston last night.

  49. Crunchy says:

Perhaps we should consider doing a DL carpool to go to NY to protest. If anyone wants to head up that effort, let us know. I might be interested in catching a ride with somebody.

  50. Crunchy says:

That’s funny. I can’t go until Saturday or Sunday. I hate to be lame, but I have a job, and desperately want to keep it.

  51. cassandra_m says:

It’s not lame to have a job.

People who want to go to OWS in NY (you know there is one going on in Philly too? It is closer), can also drive to Newark or Hoboken and take the PATH over. Or drive up to Princeton Junction and take NJT to Penn Station, then the subway down. Both options WAY easier than driving into the city and relatively inexpensive.

  52. Jason330 says:

I’ll be on al’s show from about 9:15 to give m impressions.

  53. anon says:

http://www.occupy-delaware.com. Check the main photograph, this is what occupation is really about.

  54. Jason rocks Al’s show! Heard you and you were great!

  55. jason330 says:

Thanks. Since I’m lazy and don’t want to type some of that out, I hope it is podcast-ed.

  56. pandora says:

You did a fantastic job, J!

  57. Von Cracker says:

You know what’s communist (in the conservative misunderstanding of the word)?

    Alabama.

Fuckers take way more fed dollars than any of he so-called lib states, and only give out crap and conferderate-lite bullshit!

What do you make of that, Uncle BillyBob Anderson?

  58. Von Cracker says:

So once all those bastions of real merican conserativism states get off the dole, then you can say something without being hypocrital. Otherwise, shut your effing mouth.

Those states have the executive and the state houses. Cons, in poor red states, have the ability and political power practice what they preach, but don’t.

    Why is that?
