President Cantor to Shut Down Federal Government Over Partisan Budget Cuts & Blame Harry Reid

The House passed a looney-tunes appropriations bill that includes   looney tunes teabaggy  disaster relief provision which require additional funding for FEMA for disaster relief to be offset with direct payments to oil companies  ….cuz, you know…  job creators.

Harry Reid said, “We are sending that bullshit back to the teaBag-a-go-go.  The flooded people need some benjamins.”

And President Cantor said,  “Go ahead and we’ll shut down everything except the Rayburn House Office Building Sex Dungeon.”    And then he said,   the consequences  “will be on Leader Reid’s shoulders because he’s the one playing politics with this.”

(Note: the last quote is accurate.  The others are guessed at.)

Tuesday Open Thread

Representative Mike Barbieri (D-18th) has been appointed Vice Chairman of the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Human Services and Welfare Committee. This committee oversee’s the NCSL’s policy work in social services, income security, nutrition and immigration. Good work and best of luck, Mike!

Here is a fact that both amazes me and doesn’t surprise me at all:

Every 2 minutes today we snap as many photos as the whole of humanity took in the 1800s. In fact, ten percent of all the photos the human race has ever taken were taken in the past 12 months.

Civilization is (was?) Awesome

Yesterday I had to drop off some refuse at DSWA’s Pine Tree Corner Transfer Station and the whole experience gave me a warm feeling about civilization and how nice it is to live in a civilized society.

As I paid my meager $8.00 for the drop off, I started to think about how I will one day bounce my grandchildren on my knee and they will marvel at my stories about life in America prior to the Tea Party takeover. My grandchildren will not know a world without discarded dryers and hot water heaters strew about the country side. When I tell them in that back in 2011 you very rarely saw tires and other garbage flung along the roadside I expect they will think I am lying or exaggerating.

When I say that even people who didn’t use the transfer stations paid a little bit of tax money because it made everyone’s life better, they will no doubt roll their eyes. Content in their knowledge that all such confiscatory tax schemes lead to indolence and moral decay.

Tonight, Mix it up with Newark Dems

If you are in the area tonight and in the mood for a Happy Hour, stop by the Iron Hill Brewery on Main Street in Newark, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The 23rd, 24th and 25th RD Committees are hosting the event, and this is a good opportunity to meet your fellow area liberals, progressives and Democrats.

Szczerba Funeral Set for Friday

Szczerba’s family is asking that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to any one of several organizations including: Faithful Friends in Wilmington, the Delaware Wildlife Rehabilitators Association in Newark, the Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research Center in Newark and/or the Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington.

DADT Officially History.

Today, September 20, 2011, marks the end of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy, which had banned lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and women from serving openly in our armed services. President Obama, the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs certified the repeal two months ago as per the provisions of the legislation repealing DADT, and now that the waiting period is over, the law is officially history.

Good Clean (A Capella) Fun

The Sing Off on NBC is just a delightful change of pace. Usually I hate the judges comments in these types of shows, but Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman usually have pretty good comments and I think Sarah Bareilles will be focused on the music.

Bonus: This year we have blue hens to cheer for.

The University of Delaware Deltones was founded in 1991 by a group of five University of Delaware students affectionately known as “the origitones.” The group members pride themselves on their smooth tunes and their motto – friends first, singers second – a motto they have lived by for 20 years. They focus their energy towards singing on campus and in the Delaware community, as it is important for them to give back to those who support them. The group consists of five current UD students, seven recent graduates and three recent “alumnitones.”

Group members include: Keith Abrahamson, Avi Amon, Alex Bliziotis, Jessica Carvo, Alyssa DiNardo, Chloe English, Cassie Grossmann, Andrea Lopez, Morgan Nichols, Andrea O’Neil, Lou Ortiz, Walt Pendleton, Cortney Penta, Erica Schetter and Jared Weintraub.

JRoll

Yeah, I am generally not a fan of hearing sports figures talk about politics, just because there should be some things in our society where our extremely polarized politics doesn’t touch. If the Phillies win the World Series this year, I want to be celebrating on Broad Street and in the bars and in the ballpark with Phillies fans and I don’t want to care about whether those fans are Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal.

Alas, free speech and all that. And having said all that, go ahead JRoll:

In an interview in the October issue of Philadelphia magazine, Rollins says it’s time for rich people like him to start paying more. “Warren Buffet pays less taxes percentage-wise than his secretary, you catch that?” Rollins asks. “How can that be?”

“I’m blessed to pay a lot in taxes, ” Rollins says. “I have friends and relatives that go day-to-day. Every American deserves to feel secure at the end of their life. So if it’s going to lift two families up, go ‘head, tax me more, I can handle it. Best I know, everyone’s going to die. No one’s taking money to the afterlife.”

Quotes of the Day

“This isn’t class warfare; it’s math.” President Obama

“By the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over.” Republican Congressman John Fleming, in an interview on MSNBC, on why as a small business owner he can’t afford a tax increase.

“Every single poll shows that the American public overwhelmingly supports higher taxes on the wealthy as part of a package to cut the deficit. The margins are staggering: the NYT poll shows a majority of 74 – 21; even Rasmussen shows a majority of 56 – 34. What the president proposed this morning is simply where the American people are at. If he keeps at it, if he turns his administration into a permanent campaign for structural fiscal reform, I don’t see how he loses the argument.” Andrew Sullivan.
