El Somnambulo on Al’s Show Today

Filed in Delaware by on September 29, 2011

Thursday, Sept. 29 at 10 am. We will talk about the latest state legislative rip-offs of the public, and I will share sort-of a first conceptual draft of a ‘Legislative Reform’ agenda, an agenda that I hope many will consider, support, and lobby their legislators on behalf of. We’ll have more on that on DL and possibly at an upcoming public meeting. My tease for the day.

The Al Mascitti Show is on every weekday from 9 am to 12 noon, WDEL-1150 on your AM dial.

All this and the Masked Sleepwalker as well.

National Womens Policy Research Institute came out with a report on States and health care.

Among 50states, Delaware ranks 48th in womens health care and wellness.
Among 50 states, Delaware ranks 50th in infant mortality.

How can any woman in the state legislature not support single payer health care for Delaware.

Which of those running for Insurance Commish will support the majority of Delaware citizens who also support it.

Google doesn’t seem to find the National Womens Policy Research Institute.

How would a statewide single payer system work? Would individuals be able to buy into the same health plans Legislators or state workers get?

I am interested. I am self insured and my major medical has gone up $75 per month for the past 2 years, the year before that it went up $35 per month.

The actual name is Institute for Women’s Policy Research Institute. I found the web site but could not locate the stats quoted by anon.

anon is basically correct even if he/she doesn’t have the right citations.

Delaware has struggled with infant mortality for years. In 2005 a Minner task force identified some issues and stated that Delaware had the 6th highest infant mortality among states. I believe rates have improved somewhat since then but I don’t know where we stand with other states. A lot of programs were launched in response to this report:

Women’s health care was determined to be an issue contributing to infant mortality, but I don’t know about being “48th.”

If I recall correctly, a big part of the problem was women getting pregnant with poor nutrition and smoking habits.

The 2011 Kids Count Data Book from the Annie E. Casey Foundation says the infant mortality rate is down 18 percent from 2000 to 2007. That ranks it 31 out of 50 states. Not great, but improving.
