The Illegals are Coming! The Illegals are Coming!

Filed in National by on September 8, 2011

That’s the rallying cry of a group of “concerned state legislators.” The group, State Legislators for Legal Immigration, was founded by State Representative Daryl Metcalfe or Pennsylvania.

Metcalfe is a colorful character. In 2009, he held up a resolution declaring October “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” because he claimed that the bill “had language in it that brought men into the situation”, citing this as evidence of a homosexual agenda. Again in 2009, he criticized Operation FREE, an organization that works to raise awareness of the national security threat posed by climate change by saying “As a veteran, I believe that any veteran lending their name, to promote the leftist propaganda of global warming and climate change, in an effort to control more of the wealth created in our economy, through cap and tax type policies, all in the name of national security, is a traitor to the oath he or she took to defend the Constitution of our great nation!”

I guess you can call this guy a teabagger. Hell, he was a teabagger before teabagging was cool (in the GOP).

His new soapbox has the following mission statement:

State Legislators for Legal Immigration is a nation-wide coalition founded by Pennsylvania State Representative Daryl D. Metcalfe (R-Butler) to provide a network of state legislators who are committed to working together in demanding full cooperation among our federal, state and local governments in eliminating all economic attractions and incentives (including, but not limited to: public benefits, welfare, education and employment opportunities) for illegal aliens, as well as securing our borders against unlawful invasion.

It gets better. Under the “problems and solutions” link, we find the following:

Problems

Increasingly documented incidences of homicide, identity theft, property theft, serious infectious diseases, drug running, gang violence, human trafficking, terrorism and growing cost to taxpayers are just some of the most detrimental ‘imports’ being brought across America’s unsecured borders by illegal aliens.

Solutions

1.Legislation has been introduced by state legislators across the nation to address the illegal alien issue.

2.All levels of government, working together to end access to the economic attractions for illegal aliens, will bring an end to our illegal alien invasion. Turning off the economic faucet that illegal aliens draw from will create a situation that will facilitate the illegal aliens returning to their home country of origin on their own volition.

3.The federal government must secure our borders from the entry of illegal aliens.

4.American citizens, both born and naturalized, along with legal resident aliens must be shown the respect that they deserve by requiring each and every person who desires to reside in our nation do so through the legal immigration process.

Now why am I writing about something that some schmuck in Pennsyltucky is organizing? Well, our very own Rep. Deborah Hudson is the Delaware member of this group. Yeah, that Deborah Hudson, the Greenville matron who got her Greenville address by marrying Louis Capano (yeah, that Capano family), who opposes any tax on the rich as oppressive.

So a few questions for Ms. Hudson:

1. Where is your proof (or your organization’s) that immigrants, whether legal or illegal, have caused an increase in the number of cases of “serious infectious diseases” in the US?

2. Will you force your Greenville neighbors and constituents to turn in their maids, nannies, gardeners, etc., or will you turn a blind eye to any of them who employ suspected illegal immigrants?

3. Since your organization supports Arizona-type immigration laws (which have been held up by the courts as being unconstitutional), do you also support racial profiling as a way to determine someone’s immigration status?

Ms. Hudson, you’re on the wrong side of this issue, as you are on many other issues.

Arizona-type immigration laws (which have been held up by the courts as being unconstitutional)

Actually Arizona’s employer sanctions law was upheld by the Supreme Court. Which is about the only thing in this mess I support. Go after the illegal employers.

  4. MJ says:

Puck, I think you misread my post – the AZ law has been held in abeyance by the courts, not upheld. Sorry for any confusion.

  5. puck says:

Did you follow my link? Arizona has passed several immigration laws. I am talking about the employer sanctions law, not the round-em-up, show your papers law which I do not support. The employer sanctions law has been upheld. It perhaps the only area of agreement I have with the right on this. I was pleased to hear Romney mention it last night.

  6. Aoine says:

puck – you and MJ are both are talking apples and oranges

AZ SB1070 along with Georgia’s new law SB529 and Alabama’s new law HB56 are considered Immigration type laws

AZ’s Employer sanctions law – are more akin Labor laws

One type – Immigration laws – address the problms, issues, solutions with and enforcement of immigration

the other deals strictly with employers hiring those inelegible to work in the United States

the two are disparate/but may be linked and dont compare.

Elephants are gray – not eveything grey is an elephant

That said – the meme of immigrants (legal or otherwise) bringing in infectious diseases was bandied about by the right-wing and then disproven. this was a Lou Dobbs smear peice he did years ago where the CDC reports of Leprosey were mis-quoted.

the reports of escalating crime (headless bodies found in AZ) also untrue and misleading. Crime in Immigrant areas and communities is lower than on average AND crime in general is down and trending that way.

Human trafficking – Maricopa COunty Sheriffs were recently arrested for running a human trafficking ring – not immigrants – the COPS were doing it – you know Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpiao?? who Rick Perry just called for advice in immigation policy?? and who is under DOJ investigation.

Drug Running – North America is the demand hub – creating the human tragedy that had casued tens of thousands of innocent deaths in Mexico and Central America

Before Daryl Metcalf starts poking immigrants in the eye and Debbie Hudson behind him, maybe they should educate themselves on the facts…wonder who buses your table at the county club Deb??

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez,(R).. has acknowledged her paternal grandparents came to the U.S. undocumented.

  8. delbert says:

Oh what a mess this Illegal alien thing is. When the economy was good, the same legislators looked the other way and let all the Mayberry towns across the land fill up with illegals. Now there are job pressures and they are throwing them out, or trying to. Your Federal government created this recent (20 year old) situation. We had a working class that didn’t want to work. (Don’t want to pay their rents either.) And a young working class from neighboring 3rd world nations that wanted to work. Should have taxed them all $4000 at the border, photoed & finger printed them, then used the slush fund proceeds to pay for the welfare births of their children that would be born here.

  9. Liberal Elite says:

I’ve always seen the anti-immigration fervor as just a form of racism. They are happy to have the Hispanics come here to clean our toilets, rake out our gutters, and to pick our lettuce,.. but to have them share in our prosperity and compete for OUR jobs, well they just don’t seem to know their place. Throw them all out!

The issue seems to be humanitarian at its core dealing with conflicting issues of exploitation (“Help wanted”) and oppression (“Keep out”). Illegal immigration wasn’t seen as a real problem until that balance shifted with the souring of the economy. But the shame is ours, either way.

  10. bridget says:

There are no illegal immigrants, only undocumented workers and illegal employers.

Where is the outrage about thousands of undocumented Russians in the US? Other undocumented Europeans?

Start going after these immigrants first and prove that the fear/hate of brown people isn’t the reason for antiimmigrant fervor.
