What Do The Teabags Really Want?

Filed in National by on July 26, 2011

They want a default. They want an explosive, “Mad Max” end to history in order to validate all their hatred, racism and pessimism.

This comment from a TPM commenter nailed it – and in so doing, explains why it is eventually going to be a 14th Amendment solution, or bust.

Here’s the tell on whether there’s any chance we’re not going down in flames next Tuesday (or whenever the tap really runs dry–revenues have apparently been running a bit ahead of predictions): when people start talking about a plan passed without House Teahadist votes.

And by that measure, we’re screwed.

It was just so goddamned frustrating to listen to everyone ignore the gigantic flare-lit elephant in the room last night: the Teahadists want a default. It is their primary objective. It’s a goal, not a threat, an end, not a means of getting what they “really” want. And there is no “second best” they’re willing to take than anyone else in Congress, particularly in the Senate can also take.

The only bill that will averts catastrophe is one the Teahadists will not vote for–and will bring down Boehner for bringing to the floor and every corporately-owned Republican who votes for it. And I just don’t see Boehner as being man enough to sacrifice his own career to save the ship or smart enough to see that that’s the only answer. He’d rather drive it over the waterfall in flames.

That’s always been the problem, that’s always been the danger. It has been apparent for weeks to everyone except the blathering Cable Asshats and their increasingly clueless print and Internet analogs (yeah, I’m talking to you Gail Chaddock of the Christian Science Monitor–yeah you and your “la de da politics as usual” framing that you’re constantly spewing on NPR on my morning drive).

And now, here we are careening down the last mile before we hit the River Styx, and we’re still trying to reason with the screaming maniac flooring the accelerator and laughing maniacally at the sign that says “BRIDGE OUT” in no small part because we’ve been assured he’s really a sane, sober fellow who’s opinion matters.

Yes, delbert, it will work out, just like the Eagles will win the Super Bowl……….

There is no vote that will not shatter the Republican coalition. They will not pass anything.

The media and even some folks here seem to be jumping on the “It’s either the Reid plan or the Boehner plan” narrative. I don’t see either plan passing, so it looks like we will be going either to default, or an executive-type action like the 14th Amendment thing. In that case we will be tied up in Congressional hearings and Supreme Court challenges all the way to the election. Maybe that is what the Repubs really want, the same way they tied up Clinton.

Then they will campaign under the premise that all government spending is illegitimate. Because that is what conservatives really want – not to shrink government, but to delegitimize it.

You’re losing too much sleep over this, Jason. An agreement will be reached and the USA will not default. But it’s going to be along the lines (strings) attached by the GOP. Get used to it.

Greenville Kowtows to the Tea Party. From John Sigler:

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! South Carolina’s Governor Nikki Haley has agreed to be our special guest and keynote speaker for “Vicmead” on October 20, 2011. She is a truly dynamic personality and a truly great governor. You will want to meet her and hear her speak, so please mark your calendars. This annual event held at the Vicmead Hunt Club in Greenville is the Delaware GOP’s premier fundraising event of the year – more details will follow.

  5. This is tearing the GOP apart. Club for Growth and CoC are on opposite sides of this. This is the only thing I’m enjoying. I just wish they wouldn’t take the rest of us with them.

  6. Geezer says:

JM: It’s actually pretty smart in terms of trying to broaden their base. I don’t know which party members of the Indian community in Delaware support, but I imagine the GOP will get a bump, much as the Democrats did in the days of SB Woo.

Of course, that assumes the Vicmead will allow Indians inside.

celia gets all of her info from Prissy Rakestraw so it is always wrong. The Dem libs have the country on a mad max finish, even the Greeks laugh at the D’s.
Check out the GDP growth under Obama, what malarkey.
    Nikki Haley you say, yawn.
