All Eyes On New York – Marriage Equality Vote Tonight

Filed in National by on June 24, 2011

Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of wrangling in New York on a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. It is being reported that there is finally a religious exemption that will allow the bill to come to the floor tonight. Passage of the bill is not certain, 31 NY senators have said they will vote yes, but the bill needs 32 to pass. New York will be the 6th state to get marriage equality and Nate Silver added that New York will double the number of people eligible for same sex marriage.

  1. The marriage equality bill has passed the Assembly. It hasn’t come up in the Senate yet.

  2. MJ says:

If they keep letting these senators explain their votes on each bill, we’ll be here for another week.

  3. cassandra m says:

Saw on Twitter that the NY Conservative Party Chair says that the gay marriage bill is a done deal. Snark in the form of tuning the worlds’ smallest violin is being directed at the guy.

    *Crossing fingers*

  4. MJ says:

I’ll believe it when I see the final vote. There’s talk that if the vote ends up 31-31, the Lt. Governor will break the tie in favor of marriage equality. The rethuglicans claim that he can only vote on procedural issues, but there is recent precedent for him to vote on legislation.

  5. Yeah, the conservative party guy is pretty funny. He was all for having a vote before it looked likely to pass. Now he’s all like don’t vote!

  6. Keep seeing that the votes are there to pass the bill. I’ll believe it when I see it.

  7. MJ says:

They have just started debate on the bill

  8. Getting ready to vote now!

  9. MJ says:

Ruben Diaz is an asshole and a crook.

  10. MJ says:

    The first step passes 36-26

  11. The religious exemption vote passed, it got 36 votes. Next up, vote on the final bill.

  12. MJ says:

Can you believe that Diaz is trying to lay the blame for the passage of marriage equality on the GOP? What a fucktard.

  13. MJ says:

    Great, they shut Diaz up.

  14. MJ says:

    33-29

Chalk up another victory for equality.

  15. cassandra m says:

    Yes!

Congratulations to New York. Wish I had thought ahead enough to have planned to be in the city tonite, because the party is going to be awesome.

  16. Congratulations New York!

  17. heragain says:

    I’m thrilled and proud. 🙂

  18. MJ says:

And Gov. Cuomo has signed the bill into law. Marriage equality begins in 30 days.

  19. cassandra m says:

    Yes!

Proudly watching my mail for Save the Date cards!

    Best quote from Duncan Black:

“As I’ve said before, I get abortion opponents sort of, but the people who devote themselves to fighting gay marriage…get a life, assholes.”

  21. JLH says:

Jason330: I’m also mystified by the people who imagine some sort of harm that comes from letting gay people get married, to each other I might add. It’s not like anybody’s forcing these gay marriage opponents to marry someone gay or forcing them to perform gay weddings or attend gay nuptials. And all this stuff about marrying dogs…or underage girls that they cite. Is there some mandate in gay marriage legislation that I’m missing that involves canines and little girls? Where are their fantasies taking them? I mean letting two consenting adults marry the consenting adult of their choice doesn’t seem so evil or farfetched to me. But maybe I’m missing something important. Maybe there’s a slippery slope out there that I’m blind to.
Oh, yes, somebody’s version of God doesn’t like it. Well, sorry about that. When the sprites in my backyard, on whom I depend for moral direction, tell me it’s wrong, I’ll let you know. Stay tuned.

  22. Joanne Christian says:

I don’t know jason and JLH–might there be a fear of gay arranged marriages? I mean some fear that in regular marriage? 🙂

  23. JLH says:

Oh yeah, arranged gay marriage. I can’t even arrange to get my kids to pick up their socks, much less marry the person of the same sex I’ve picked out for them.

I actually think these opponents of gay marriage are scared of gay people. There’s no other reason to marginalize a whole group, to deny a group rights, unless you’re afraid of something. I’m trying to figure out what they’re afraid of…it would explain a lot.

Otherwise, I just have to believe they want to be mean to gay people. And that kind of meanness makes me very uncomfortable.

  24. MJ says:

Watch out for Yenta, the Gay Matchmaker, this Fall on Bravo!

  25. Joanne Christian says:

    Wouldn’t that be Genta?

  26. MJ says:

Newt opens his yap about marriage equality.

Saying he thinks marriage is between a man and a woman, he told reporters that he “would like to find ways to defend that view as legitimately and effectively as possible.”

He said he thinks the nation should be defending the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.

Or in Newtie’s case, between a man and a woman and another woman as long as the first woman is in the hospital having cancer treatments and you’re screwing around on her.

  27. puck says:

Remember, in the eyes of the Church, Newt has only been married once. No wonder he converted.

  28. cassandra_m says:

Elayne Boosler on Twitter notes that Newt Gingrich dissed NYs new gay marriage law, but Tiffany’s NY says they’ll be happy to have grooms who pay their bills.

Gay marriage will create jobs at Tiffany’s!
