Palin Digs In: Paul Revere Did Ride to Warn the British

Filed in National by on June 6, 2011

There is no “back down” in Sarah Palin.   If she says Paul Revere rode to warn the British, by God, he rode to warn the British.

  1. Cpt Robespierre says:

Just got back from vacation in my native Massachusetts. She is an absolute laughingstock there right now for both the initial statement and her refusal to back down. Almost everyone I know from back home is gleefully passing around links to the story.

It’s certainly true that we devote more time to colonial Massachusetts history in school than people growing up in other states would, but that’s mainly because early Massachusetts history is early American history to a large extent, so we just sort of roll it together there. But that underscores the point here which is that it’s ridiculous not to know the basics of the story — especially with the nationwide fame of the Longfellow poem about Revere’s ride, which is correct enough to get the gist of the situation. It would be one thing if she didn’t know some random piece of Massachusetts history that had little national impact, but Revere and co. are definitely covered in history classes in other parts of the country.

Plus, at the very least she could have noticed her logical plot holes in her fantasy version of the event: one doesn’t go around ringing bells and taunting local garrisons of occupying troops when trying to be super stealthy and complete a secret mission that’s time-sensitive. The bell-ringing came later when all the surrounding towns and villages out west of Boston (e.g. Lexington, Concord, etc.) were alerting the villagers that they needed to show up for militia duty. Revere wasn’t ringing bells there or in Boston. I think Lexington’s about 30 minutes by car from Boston today (which means much slower by horse at night on old dirt roads), so ringing bells that far west wasn’t going to alert any British. That was sort of the whole point of the British marching west to seize the colonial arsenals: they didn’t have troops out there to control them.

*sigh* Not much point trying to educate the obstinately clueless.

  2. Palin’s so arrogant she thinks history conforms to her. There really is nothing too petty for her to comment on, is there? One of the things that makes the story so amusing is that she was on Boston’s Freedom Trail when she gave her revised version of history. I guess she didn’t take a guided tour of the trail.

  3. Paul Revere’s midnight ride – ringing bells and firing warning shots to tell the British that they weren’t taking our guns. *sigh*

Was this before or after Moses brought the Constitution down from Mt. Sinai?

  4. Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride (revised)

Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
To warn the Brits, or what? Oh, dear
    I cannot think, it’s not quite clear…

I have it now! And I will tell:
He rode, he shot, he rang the bell,
He told the Brits to go to hell
    Defiant, proud and shooting swell.

Through the country dark he road
Through fair New Hampshire, so we’re told,
Through field and street, he was right bold
His rifle clutched, a vise-like hold.

“We armed, we’re armed!” he shouted wide,
He rang that bell as he did ride,
He shot the dark from side to side,
Uh, wait, I think that, uh, I lied.

    Love this UI.
    Vacation really refreshed you.

  6. MatterOfBit says:

I thought the point was that he did a midnight ride NOT to be found out by the Brits. It’s no longer endearingly stupid, it’s reckless. I bet good old boy reps are trying to figure out how to get Sarah back in the box, and how yo erase the mistake of ever nominating her for vp in the first place.

  7. Jason330 says:

Sarah Palin is popular because she provides idiots with some validation. They are in economic trouble, not because they are stupid, but because the liberal media is against them. They are angry at liberals and various brown skinned people because otherwise they’d need to take a hard look at their own choices.

This clusterf*ck should be the end of her public life, but it will only make her stronger.

  8. timefortruth says:

One if by land, two if by tour bus……

  9. puck says:

    Paul Revere, Community Organizer.

  10. Cpt Robespierre says:

    Good find, UI.

  11. Kasey says:

Yeah, the devil is always in the details. She got mixed up on the bell stuff, but Revere did actually warn the British after he was captured, probably trying to psych them out with exaggerated reports of the size of the militia, etc. So – be careful about criticisms or look as clueless as she is.

  12. Geezer says:

Sorry, but that’s the weakest defense imaginable. He wasn’t “warning” the British so much as “bragging,” or even “lying” to the British that the patriots would be ready for them. In truth, he had no idea of the size of the patriot force or whether the arms the British were after had or hadn’t already fallen into their hands.

Beyond that, he wasn’t shooting guns and ringing bells; he rode through the countryside, not “the town”; and tried to mislead his captors, hardly the same thing as “warning the British.”

In short, the reason she looked “clueless” is not her information, bad as it was, but her typical inability to articulate even simple thoughts clearly. Kind of an impediment for a politician, don’t you think?

More importantly, she could have responded to Chris Wallace, “Well, what I was trying to convey came out a little garbled. Here’s the point I was trying to make.” But that would require her to actually criticize herself, something she’s apparently incapable of.

    So she’s also an asshole.

  13. Jason330 says:

A bunch of Palinites are on Wikipedia now trying to edit the entry for Revere to include ringing bells and warning the British. Kasey is probably one of them.

  14. Boxwood says:

Speaking of bells getting rung…how is Anthony Weiner doing?

  15. political wizzard says:

“Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?” sorry couldn’t help myself

  16. Me1976 says:

You guys might want to do a little deeper research. She was right.

    • No she wasn’t. She wouldn’t pass a high school history test. Revere was not ringing bells, firing warning shots or warning the British. Once again, Palin gets graded on a curve.

  17. socialistic ben says:

how bout you help us in that research, ME….
or is that like saying “you might want ot look into it… Palin and Beck kill small Indonesian children every night…. just look at their record! LOOK AT THEIR RECORD!!!”

  18. jason330 says:

Which is more pitiful, Palin’s original remarks, Palin’s defense of her remarks, or her supporter’s defense of her defense of the remarks?

It is a mobius strip of stupid stupidity.
