Senator Chris Coons on Face the Nation

Senator Coons was on Face the Nation yesterday morning:

He is on a panel with Blumenthal and Kirk for about the first 14 minutes of this program. The most interesting part of this is after Schieffer asks about the current (really bad) polling on Congress — Senator Coons makes the point that Congress should be doing more to tackle problems.

Coons is good on TV and it was good to see a talking panel that included more Democrats than republicans for a change. What was weird about watching this, though, was that the entire effort seems designed to present something for these legislators to react to, not necessarily to get anything like policy analysis or tough questions like What are YOU doing to get the Senate moving? It just seemed that interview turned out to be an exercise in everyone hitting the pinatas they needed to without having to be especially informative about it. I think that this tends to be the form on the Sunday Morning Yak Shows — but it is something else to see it in operation.

Coons does a great job articulating the fact that Democrats are distinct from Republicans because of their values. It is so odd to me that so many Democrats try to erase the line between the parties.

You are right about Schieffer. Nauseating. I’ve stopped watching this kind of TV because there is nothing to it beyond chasing Fox. It is all some flavor of “Real Housewives.”
