Rick Santorum And The Fertility Clinic Conundrum

Filed in National by on January 24, 2011

This is awesome. Fearless blogger Mike Stark managed to get a phone call into Bill Bennett’s radio show when Rick Santorum was guest hosting.

A former Republican Senator considered to be a candidate for the party’s 2012 presidential nomination was recently confronted by a blogger with a perplexing question: Being pro-life, if you found yourself in a fertility clinic that was burning down, and you had a choice between saving a 2-year-old girl or a petri dish of five fertilized eggs, what would you do?

Rick Santorum, an employee of the Republican Fox News Channel and former US Senator from Pennsylvania, didn’t seem too sure.

“I’d try to rescue as many as those children as possible,” he told blogger Mike Stark while filling in as a guest host for a Friday broadcast of the Bill Bennett radio talk show “Morning in America.”

Santorum dismissed the question as “a false choice,” claiming later in the conversation that if put in such a situation, he would instead “save all human life.”

Of course he would save the girl because she is a human PERSON whereas the fertilized eggs are not. They are merely human life, on par with human skin cells.

Despite what some on the right claim… this is not a gotcha question.

“Pro-Lifers” see no difference between a fertilized egg and a 2 year old child. This lack of difference is the foundation of their argument against abortion. We already know that many of them believe that the fetus has more right to live than the mother, so Santorum’s dodge is interesting only to those in America not familiar with the “Pro-Life’s” rigid views.

Despite his claim this is not a false choice, mainly because this is the basis for their argument. His previous comment – “I’d try to rescue as many as those children as possible” – reveals his position.

Personally, I think most people (including “Pro-Lifers”)would save the 2 year old… unless someone could tell me how a person running out of a burning building with an armful of petri dishes rather than the 2 year old plays out.

Is the two year old in question a Democrat or a T-Bagger?
