I loved the part where McCain said that liberals don’t know anyone in the military. I also love how he said we have to keep DADT because there are soldiers in Walter Reed missing limbs.

Reid “You don’t have to be straight to shoot straight.”

  2. Ordinary Joe

Gee, DD — that doesn’t seem very tolerant of diverse views to me. And here I thought you Lefties believed that dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

  3. Delaware Dem

Ordinary Joe–I am through respecting bigots for their bigotry. I am intolerant of intolerance. Bigotry is not another view point to be respected. It is to be mocked and shamed.

  4. Ordinary Joe

In other words, you’ve just decided to become another hatemonger expressing contempt and bigotry against those who dare to view the world differently than you. What next? Hating folks because of their gender, religion, nationality, or the color of their skin?

And I offer that point of view as one who believes that DADT is a silly policy that ought to be done away with.

  5. Delaware Dem

DADT repeal passes 63-33. So some Republican and one or two Democratic cowards did not vote. GOPers voting AYE: Brown, Snowe, Collins, Voinovich, Murkowski, Kirk.

  6. Delaware Dem

    Joe, are you dense?

I will not tolerate or respect anyone who is a bigot.

If you oppose the DREAM act, then fine. I won’t hate you. If you support the endless Afghan war, I won’t hate you.

But if you dare seek to deny another their civil rights and equality under the law, you are evil. And I will hate you.

Here is McCain’s incoherent babbling right before the DADT repeal vote:

Today’s a very sad day. The Commandant of the United States Marine Coprs says when your life hangs on the line, you don’t want anything distracting it. Mistakes or inattention or distraction cost Marines’ lives. I don’t want to permit that opportunity to happen and I’ll tell you why. You go up to Bethesday Naval Hospital. Marines are up there with no legs. None. You’ve got Marines at Walter Reed with no limbs.

What is the backstory on this? How is it even possible that Dems voted as a block and got the Republican votes that they did? This is odd.

Statement by the President on the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010

Today, the Senate has taken an historic step toward ending a policy that undermines our national security while violating the very ideals that our brave men and women in uniform risk their lives to defend. By ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay. And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love.

The repeal happened because of hardworking activists (if only middle class tax cuts had such a group) and dedicated Senate sponsors. Lieberman really was key as was Reid and of course Obama did make the repeal one of his priorities. Since we’re emo progressives I think we’re supposed to be sad.

BTW, the Senate waived the usual 30 hour wait after cloture so the repeal vote should occur around 3 pm today.

John McCain is a fucking asshole who deserves a one-way ticket back to the Hanoi Hilton. There I said it. Flame away!

    There was no money involved.

Republicans really don’t care about social issues or culture wars anymore.

  13. a.price

    careful there MJ…
remember, hateful bigots are an oppressed group. we need to recognize their rights to hate people. Ordinary Joe and McCain will be the founding member of the NAAB(igot)A(ssholes)

  14. pandora

    I’m thrilled!

I can’t believe we’ve reached a point where the Senate voting to allow a vote is the nail-biter segment of the process.

  15. anon

    There was no money involved.

I take that back. DADT repeal cost us the tax cuts for the rich – $700B for two years and then forever.

    Did we pay too much?

  16. anonone

DelDem wrote “But if you dare seek to deny another their civil rights and equality under the law, you are evil. And I will hate you.”

You must hate Obama then. For starters, he is still opposed to equal rights for gays. And that’s just for starters.

  17. Joe Cass

Don’t forget the pay roll tax cuts which is the back door to de-fund social security!
    Yeah, we bought the farm

  18. anon

Somehow Democrats need to learn how to fight for each of our constituencies without selling the farm. Giving up three chips to get two is not a winning proposition.

  19. jason330

According to Sean Hannity and some DL commenters, “Obama needs to go” is the subtext of every news item. Not even the subtext, really. The text.

  20. MJ

It was extremely pleasing to watch the vote on CSPAN. And that closet case-practicing buggerer Lindsay Graham voted no. Hopefully his boyfriend will cut him off for awhile.

Kudos to GOP Senators Burr and Ensign for doing what was right and voting to repeal this insipid law.

  21. Capt.Willard

    This is GREAT! Finally!
Now, if the fashion industry would only allow us openly heterosexual woman’s fashion designers a place at the table, well, let’s just say, I would probably be once again destroyed by the rejection of the women of the world.
    Where is the Hemlock?

  22. nemski

Wow, apparently the far left loonies can’t even be happy with this. It’s like they’ve got a major stick up their ass called life.

  23. anon

The tone police are on holiday today I see.

DADT repeal is an victory for an important principle of justice, no doubt.

But the sad fact that Repubs only permitted a victory for what is probably one of our smallest constituencies – gays who wish to serve openly – allows only for a momentary smile. It was a costly victory. Savor it because it will likely be the last.

  24. MJ

As usual, anon is full of shit. So, what you’re saying is that since DADT affected “one of our smallest consituencies,” it should have remained in place? What a wanker.

  25. anon

So, what you’re saying is that since DADT affected “one of our smallest consituencies,” it should have remained in place?

I didn’t say that. If the tone police won’t respond I’m making a citizen’s arrest. You are busted.

It is a victory. But do not glibly ignore the price the rest of the nation paid for this victory.

More such victories and we will be destroyed.

  26. nemski

With 79 self-declared progressives of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and only 48 nays, I’m laughing and laughing and laughing.

There are meds for inappropriate laughter. Nobody gets your joke, if that’s what it was.

If this is our only victory then those newly unburdened soldiers better get busy creating 15 million jobs.

Why you laughin’ Nemski? The joke’s on you, for about $2,074.

  29. delacrat

nemski, there’s fake liberals everywhere, even in the progressive caucus.

If you don’t believe me, check out the one in your mirror.

I am happy that DADT was finally repealed. I am glad that all Americans now have equal rights to commit legal homicide, torture, and mass murders.

Funny how a President supports equal rights to kill while still refusing to support equal rights regarding choosing who to love and marry. But, as DelDem said, those who “seek to deny another their civil rights and equality under the law” are “evil.”

  31. anonone

anon, as I have pointed out several times, the “tone police” are selective in whose expressions of opinion they choose to castigate.

a1, here is where we depart. The world is fuzzy and following every thought to its logical conclusion doesn’t always result in the correct answer.

“delacrat, there are always some mice who cheer for the cat.”

    Well said, anonone.

Andrew Sullivan, who unlike Anonone has skin in the game, observes:

    http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2010/12/obamas-long-game.html

“Like 2009’s removal of the HIV ban, which was as painstakingly slow but thereby much more entrenched, this process took time. Without the Pentagon study, it wouldn’t have passed. Without Obama keeping Lieberman inside the tent, it wouldn’t have passed. Without the critical relationship between Bob Gates and Obama, it wouldn’t have passed.”

  35. yet another anon (for now)

so, del and a1 are the same person right? (not an outing just a Beckian question meant to discredit them (both?)
