Antsy being out of the spotlight for very long, every now and then Senator Tom Carper feels the need to yell down from his ivory tower and let everyone know that he still sucks. His latest reminder is in the form of signing onto a letter letting everyone know that he backs the Republican plan to give millionaires more tax cuts while demonstrating fiscally prudence by defunding Social Security.

A group of 14 Democrats pressed for a congressional action to address the deficit despite a failure by President Obama’s fiscal commission to achieve enough votes to send its austerity plan to Congress for a vote….
The 14 senators hailed the commission’s recommendations on Social Security, healthcare, and tax reforms — three cornerstones of the plan on which support for a plan could hinge….
The signatories were Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.), Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Michael Bennet (D-Colo,), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.).
You lazy ass seniors are on notice. Tom Carper is coming for you. You millionaires can relax.
My guess is he/they won’t go after current seniors – this group needs their votes. My bet is that they’ll target those under 50 and hope that those current seniors are selfish enough to secure their benefits while depriving younger people.
What’s scary is that this strategy would probably work.
Funny how when Tom Carper walked up to the podium in a church on the eastside of Wilmington on Friday to speak some words of comfort for the friends and family of Hazel Plant, he explained what a good Democrat stands for but he never mentioned bargaining away 700 billion in tax cuts for America’s uber rich on the backs of the middle class and America’s children.
Both Coons and Carney have supported extending tax cuts for the top 2 percent but I guess Coons isn’t stupid enough to actually sign a letter like this.

The person I’m really mad at right now is Dick Durbin. He signed onto that Social Security cutting fiscal commission report. He’s supposedly a progressive.
So much for concern about lowering the deficit.

It is like looking into a fun house mirror to consider the case of our fucked up Senator. Of course the parallels break down pretty quickly because “the left” does not have control of the mass media or a faction of zombified, nihilistic bomb throwers.
But still, there are enough similarities there to comfort shallow thinkers like Ron Williams and Tom “the Don” Carper.
What’s scary is that this strategy would probably work.
What’s scarier is that no strategy is really needed anymore to cut taxes for the rich and take away benefits from the rest of us. That is the default path rolling downhill fast, and the effort required to reverse it is too great.

While I applaud your enthusiasm, I would respectfully forward the notion that John Kowalko can do a lot more good in the Delaware General Assembly than in the U.S. Senate. That’s a better spot for Beau, because it will (with luck) put the AG’s office in the hands of a professional lawyer.

Tom Carper did not vote (or so it looks like from a quick search) for the 2001 tax cuts or the 2003 round.
But you can see Carper following the lead of our legislators who are trying to be on all sides of the current economic distress — he wants to be for tax cuts and for deficit reduction when the two of these things are always and everywhere in competition with one another. What I’d like to hear from Carper is how he can reconcile these two ideas — letting the Bush tax cuts expire actually get you genuine deficit reduction. Deficit reduction that is in striking range of President Obama’s targets.
