FDU Poll: Carney Leads By 17%, Flowers-Bonini Tied

Filed in National by on October 29, 2010

Fairleigh Dickinson University released the rest of their poll on Delaware today. It showed that John Carney leads Glen Urquhart by 17% – 53% for Carney, 36% for Urquhart. It also showed a tie between Flowers (42%) and Bonini (41%). Wagner still leads Korn, but his lead has been cut from 15% to 10%.

Democrat John C. Carney Jr. leads Republican Glen Urquhart by 17 points in the race for Delaware’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a PublicMind poll released this morning by Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The poll, which surveyed 797 likely voters statewide from Oct. 20-26, showed Carney leading 53-36, up a few ticks (51-36) from a similar poll released Oct. 5.

Yesterday Rob Tornoe talked about Christine O’Donnell’s “long shadow.” I’ve always wondered whether O’Donnell would help or hurt Urquhart, since they’re very similar ideologically. I think it’s fairly obvious that she’s hurting him. Urquhart hasn’t been able to make the case for his candidacy but he also can’t raise money. The last FEC report shows that Urquhart raised $63K (not too bad) but loaned himself another $110K. Carney raised $100K in the same period.

Now for the rest of the state ticket:

Well within the poll’s margin of error — 3.5 percent — is the state treasurer’s race, where Democrat Chip Flowers holds a sliver of a lead, with 42 percent to Republican state Sen. Colin Bonini’s 41 percent. The men were tid at 38 percent in the last FDU poll. The number of undecided voters dropped from 21 percent to 17 percent in that time.

The race for the state auditor’s office tightened a bit, with Republican Tom Wagner, the incumbent, holding a 10-point lead over Democratic challenger Richard Korn. Wagner’s lead was 15 points in the last poll. Korn leads in New Castle County, 43-38.

Democratic Attorney General Beau Biden, running without a Republican opponent, led independent Doug Campbell by 42 points, the same lead he had earlier in the month.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to be a Republican year in Delaware although they could double the number of statewide elected Republican officials.

I’m not really disagreeing with the analysis, but am aiming to expand upon it.

i don’t think that urquhart can blame COD for his dismal numbers. He can blame only himself. He has an insane, shallow platform, and anyone who sees him in person can tell what a shallow person he is. He has failed to do homework to be versed in the range of issues that will encounter our next US Representative.

He has no desire to work for DE–he only wants to work for himself.

It is encouraging to see that those polled recognize this.

If he is hurt by COD, it is because he chose to align himself with her.

  3. I wish we could do more for Richard Korn at this late date. I know that Wagner’s politics (like his refusing to submit his audit of Paula Roy’s health network agency to the Sunset Committee and having to be SUBPOENA’d before he gave it up) stinks.

Wagner also brags about getting a clean record “independent” peer review from KPMG without admitting that the Auditor’s office pays KPMG for their %17 share of state business. That is a lot of conflict of interest for a supposed independent peer reviewer.

Perhaps Korn should have got into gear a whole lot earlier considering the lack of name recognition he has downstate.

  4. You’re right PSB – Urquhart can’t really stand on his own, his ideas are from the 80s (missile defense, defund NPR) and O’Donnell is a drag on the ticket. I think he’d be doing much better if he was running with Castle at the top of the ticket.

  5. I think you’re right Nancy that Korn waited too late to make his move. He’s been hitting Wagner pretty hard and has gotten Wagner off his game but it’s probably too late. We’ll see. Korn will also be helped by the top of the ticket.

Tax cuts for the rich lead by 100%.

It was hard for Korn to “make his move” when he had a primary to run and pay for. And he has been down here (in sussex) for months speaking to various groups with a simple campaign message “Wagner is not doing his job”

And everyone reading this blog can do something at this late date. Make a list of 20 people you personally know, call them and urge them to vote for Democrats. Then follow up on Tuesday and make sure they have voted.

You can also volunteer at your local Dem. GOTV HQ. They are putting on a massive phone bank this weekend and need all the callers they can get.

Flowers is closing the deal, and Colin’s “I don’t have a masters” is going to help Chip. Lets get out there and get the whole statewide ticket elected.

If we win the treasurers office and auditor, we could wipe Delaware clean of state wide Republican’ts.

  8. Yes, I know that Richard has been working hard talking to groups but the idea is to reach the people who aren’t particularly inclined to be involved in ‘groups’. The independents etc. have to be exposed to the name and message via radio or tv and Korn didn’t start any of the above until a few weeks ago. Nothing over the cable or air waves during his primary and not much until mid-Oct. against the popular, long-time incumbent is a lot to try and overcome. But he is going like gang-busters now, no doubt. I am writing a post right now in support of his candidacy.

I will be working the phones in Newark on election day and attending the Wilmington rally on Saturday. It won’t hurt to personally reach out to friends to GOTV too via fb and email.
