Volunteer Opportunity This Sunday

Filed in National by on September 29, 2010

If you have been just dying to get out there to meet the Democratic candidates and do something to help get them elected, I have an opportunity for you.

The 9th District Democratic committee is sponsoring an event on Sunday, October 3rd starting at noon at 200 Cleaver Farm Rd.  There will be a small rally to give everyone a chance to see the Democratic candidates all the way up and down the ticket.  The following candidates are expected to speak (I promise they’ll keep it short and sweet):

  • Chris Coons
  • John Carney
  • Beau Biden
  • Chip Flowers
  • Richard Korn
  • Trinidad Navarro
  • Ciro Poppiti
  • Bruce Ennis
  • Quinn Johnson
  • Rebecca Walker
  • Bill Powers

At 1PM, we will do the work that will get these candidates elected.  We will be canvassing the Middletown area preparing to get out the vote. And we should have you home in time to watch the Eagles beat the Redskins.

This is an excellent opportunity to see the stars of the Delaware Democratic Party and give them a hand in making Delaware a better place.

For more information or to RSVP, call either 9th District Chair,  Stephanie Hansen at (302) 376-9033 or the 9th District Treasurer, Dave Woodside at (302) 834-4421.

  1. Delbert says:

    BO KNOWS FOREIGN POLICY

And if you’re lucky at this little “meet and greet”, you might even get to hear Bo Biden’s latest stump on foreign policy. The Global Leadership Coalition seems to think he’s an expert, even though all he was is a Captain in the Weekend Warriors who served some easy time in Iraq. And before that he was just a chump in the AG office who beat the qualified heir (Ferris Wharton)in the last Attorney General race just because of his name. Now he’s a freaking foreign policy expert all of the sudden, while just last week he was mugging in front of a shut down drug house near Frankford, desperate for any photo-op he could get.

  2. Jason330 says:

Delbert hints at someone Ive been thinking. Once this election is over and the wreckage of the DE GOP is assessed, it could be 30 years before another Republican is elected statewide.

  3. Aoine says:

Ferris Wharton the qualified heir?? – oh you mean the “left the scene of a drunk hit and run” Ferris Wharton

didn’t know a drunk driver was the heir to the AG’s office

  4. Good question Jason. What is the future of the Republican party in Delaware? The party is now being dominated by the downstate activists – will they be able to find candidates that appeal statewide? Let’s face it, right now Christine O’Donnell is the leading Republican in the state.

Perhaps when she loses the top Republican will be Tom Wagner of perhaps Colin Bonini if he gets elected? Who is the future in the party? I think perhaps Bonini and Copeland can appeal to both upstate and downstate Republicans, I’m just not sure how much they appeal to the general electorate.

  5. pandora says:

I’m trying to rearrange my schedule to attend. Great idea!

Also, please notice how Delbert supports the troops: all he was is a Captain in the Weekend Warriors who served some easy time in Iraq. Classy.

  6. Aoine says:

Yup Pandora – wonder if delbert even WORE a uniform??

  7. Auntie Dem says:

Beau left his wife and two very young children at home for a year. I remember being at a meeting when he called and reported the temperature was 104 degrees where he was. When he returned he looked absolutely gaunt. It was no walk in the park and he didn’t have to do it. He did his duty.

Delbert, I have no clue who you are, but you just hit my ignorant pig list.

  8. delacrat says:

“Also, please notice how Delbert supports the troops: ‘all he was is a Captain in the Weekend Warriors who served some easy time in Iraq.’ “ …. Pandora

    Pandora,

People who kill brown foreigners do not deserve support.

  9. Geezer says:

All the nice things said about Beau are true, but he sounded completely out of his depth when interviewed about his speech by Allan Loudell (there’s a podcast). As much as I like the guy personally, I truly resent having him thrust upon the state by his father.

  10. Geezer says:

“People who kill brown foreigners do not deserve support.”

What about people who “kill” white foreigners? (I put kill in quotes because he was with the JAG corps. I don’t think a lot of killing was involved). Did you consider the intervention in the Balkans wrong? Would you have been against intervention in the Rwandan civil war?

Unlike the partisans here, I’m willing to acknowledge that his service was performed with the idea of burnishing his resume. But it sounds from that sentence I quoted that you are applying a pacifism test to candidates. Is that accurate?

  11. MJ says:

So, delacrap, should we only kill white foreigners? Yellow ones? Or are you advocating total, universal disarmament?

  12. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

Just another reminder of the stakes. Not only will we be stuck with any Republican crazies for six years, not only will we not have a chance to win those seats back for six years (there just aren’t that many winnable Republican seats coming up in 2012-2014).

It is this Senate we are electing who will vote on Obama’s next SCOTUS appointment. If we let the crazies in, what likelihood is there that he will get anyone past that is to the left of a Kennedy?

  13. delacrat says:

    Geezer, MJ,

With the single exception of the Balkans, “the troops” have been about killing brown foreigners since WW II.

As such, politicians who get their tickets punched in the military are no great shakes with me.

  14. Delbert says:

You haven’t kept up on the news the past year or so, Aoine. The AG office has been full of drunk drivers.

  15. heragain says:

lg, could you tweet a link for this so I can retweet it, please?

  16. liberalgeek says:

Heragain – Done. Will I see you there?

  17. Aoine says:

ummm Delbert – Ms Oliva’s charge was nolle pros(sed) – found not guilty

the other DAG’s do have charges, yes

but you where speaking SPECIFICIALLY of the AG the Attorney General himself – not the DAGs (deputy Attorney Generals)

stop mixing metaphors and statements – you only get yourself confused

  18. heragain says:

Thank you, lg. No, my heart (and doorknocking time) is promised to another then. Middletown is passport distance for me, you know. 😉

  19. Geezer says:

“With the single exception of the Balkans, “the troops” have been about killing brown foreigners since WW II.”

Yeah? So? Lots of people (not Beau, obviously) join the service because it’s their best opportunity to climb the economic ladder. Is it their fault there’s a shortage of majority-white nations we haven’t already taken economic control of? As usual, your black-white pronouncements obscure what I suspect are actually nuanced beliefs.

  20. liberalgeek says:

We have arranged for the border patrol to look the other way as people drive over the bridge on Sunday.

  21. heragain says:

    Good to know. 😀

  22. Venus says:

Bill Powers shouldn’t even be allowed to share space with the other candidates. He screwed the MOT area with his workforce housing initiative. How’s he going to change that dark cloud? The others running are fools to be seen with him.

  23. Auntie Dem says:

    LOL Geek!

  24. joanne Christian says:

Hey Geek, can you arrange a toll amnesty?

  25. liberalgeek says:

Venus – how is WFH Bill Powers’ initiative? Did he introduce the bill?

  26. liberalgeek says:

JC – Yes, I have arranged for anyone that crosses the canal via the Summit, St. Georges, Reedy Point or Chesapeake City bridges will be toll-free on Sunday!

  27. Venus says:

His name is all over it, and his votes to get it to go through. He never stood up for MOT, or the schools and infrastructure down there. He went along with the whole package.

  28. Joanne Christian says:

You Democrats–always giving it away to your side:)!!!

  29. anon says:

Bring your own toilet paper and clean drinking water.

  30. Venus says:

And no need to wear your teeth.

  31. liberalgeek says:

We joke, but the Middletown-Odessa-Townsend area is an area in transition from a homogeneous rural small town to a huge population center with a rich diversity of citizens and ideas. It is going to be an important political center in the next 30 years. The outreach that we do now, will pay dividends for a generation. Come out and help us plant the seeds.

  32. Geezer says:

“a huge population center with a rich diversity of citizens and ideas.”

You can’t tell from the school population, which last time I checked (admittedly a few years ago) had a lower percentage of minorities than anywhere else in the state.

  33. Joanne Christian says:

You’re so right LG. This area used to be where you stopped to buy corn on the way back from beach years ago. Now, it’s a bedroom community to DC, Philly, Baltimore, NYC (I’m not kidding–believe me), Alexandria and Wilmington. I think it’s an important political center RIGHT NOW–as it trends to new move-ins, who you would want on board w/ what’s happening w/ Delaware politics. Good on you for the outreach. Middletown, I think, is a snapshot of the American demographic.

  34. Joanne Christian says:

Well geezer, at least you admit it was a few years ago. Time to look again.

  35. Jason330 says:

If you look at the numbers it was a strong showing in MOT districts that put Markell over the top in his primary, and I know for a fact that the Jack Pack canvassed the area tirelessly. We’ll need a big MOT turn out this time since there is not much happening in the city of Wilmington.

  36. Delbert says:

Middletown used to have a little “rich diversity” back when it was a “rural small town”. As I recall the schools were 38% African American way back when I attended them in the early days of deseg. Then all you tree hugging upper middle class whites moved in and ruined the place. I liked it better in the old days when it had one red light and we used to stomp the shit out of your upstate football teams.

  37. yeoman says:

…and it worked for Delbert because the only time he needed to be cool with that “diverse” 38% of poor and very poor African-Americans coming off of Lake street was when he needed their help on the football field.

Seriously, though, despite the problems that have come with development, Middletown is a much richer and more vibrant community today and part of that is because of all the Hispanic, Indian, Asian and white families of all classes that have made it their home. To pretend otherwise is emblematic of the romantic attachment you feel towards a past that never really existed and was horribly exclusionary to anyone who wasn’t a ‘middle class white’

  38. delacrat says:

“With the single exception of the Balkans, “the troops” have been about killing brown foreigners since WW II.” delacrat

“Yeah? So? Lots of people (not Beau, obviously) join the service because it’s their best opportunity to climb the economic ladder. Geezer

Geezer, could that reasoning get any weaker? So we should vote for Beau because he can’t even claim even the lamest excuse killing brown foreigners?

  39. Geezer says:

“Well geezer, at least you admit it was a few years ago. Time to look again.”

So I did. ACS data, three-year period ’06-’08: White 81.4%, black 14.8%, Asian 3.8%. Higher white percentage than most school districts, but getting closer.

  40. Geezer says:

“So we should vote for Beau because he can’t even claim even the lamest excuse killing brown foreigners?”

Actually, I”m against Beau’s political career. My complaint is your denigration of people joining the service, as if their only goal in doing so was to “kill brown foreigners.”

  41. delacrat says:

“Actually, I”m against Beau’s political career. My complaint is your denigration of people joining the service, as if their only goal in doing so was to “kill brown foreigners.”

So you think “climbing the economic ladder” justifies killing brown foreigners.

  42. heragain says:

Well, I hate that all of Delaware, upstate & down, has been developed past any reasonable sense of place or provision for services. But that’s been the favorite project of politicians on both sides of the aisle for many years, so we cope with what we get.

  43. Venus says:

And I’m done coping with Bill Powers. He will be split from my ticket.

  44. Brandywine Pete says:

Work for the corrupt and incompetent Dems? No thanks. I pay enough taxes to waste more time with these thieves.

  45. Joe Cass says:

Hey LG, 3 minutes ago I got a call from “the head office” asking me to door knock TOMORROW,October 2nd, 10am and meeting at the same address. Is this redundancy or has somebody muffed? “Ryan” also implied that Chris and or John would be there. What’s up?
