OMG – O’Donnell Is Moronic

MJ caught this on Countdown first. Keith Olbermann had a clip from last night’s First State Patriots candidate forum. Christine O’Donnell was asked what role “czars” should have in running the government. She answered “none” but had a clarification:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

O’Donnell: Article 1, Section 9 says no title of nobility should granted by the United States, there you go. I would say to President Obama that czar is a title of nobility and therefore unconstitutional. (UI transcript, errors mine)

Does O’Donnell not understand that there is not actually people called “czars” and they are not appointed special powers. Czar is a shorthand term in Washington for a special advisor to the president. They are nothing new or unusual but if you only watch Fox News, you probably don’t understand that.

Tuesday’s Asshat of the Day – UPDATED

John McCain. Blanche Lincoln. Susan Collins. Mark Pryor. Mitch McConnell. Hell, the entire Rethuglican Senate Caucus. What do these people all have in common? They all hate our troops! They all voted against the Defense Authorization Bill, thus putting our troops at risk. They voted to support a filibuster against the DAB. They are our Asshats of the Day.

Susan Collins gave an “impassioned” speech about how she supported the repeal of Don’ Ask, Don’t Tell, then promptly went on to the Senate floor with some lame ass excuse about not being able to offer unlimited amendments to the DAB, and thus not only voted to keep DADT in place, but also voted against The DREAM Act.

Do you know what happens when appropriations bills are not passed and signed into law by October 1? Hiring is frozen, supplies cannot be bought, technology improvements cannot be made, because Federal agencies are forced to work on a continuing resolution that only funds them for 30 days at a portion of what they were funded for the previous fiscal year.

These asshats are holding our troops hostage to score some political points with the teabaggers back in their home states. Not only did the turn their backs on the thousands of gay and lesbian troops currently serving our country, but they also closed the door on a pathway to citizenship for the children of undocumented aliens who came here as minors, graduated from high school (usually always thinking that they were citizens) and went on to serve in the military. These folks said “Fuck You!” to thousands of our troops today.

And not to miss out on all of the fun, “Bishop” Harry Jackson of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville MD went as far as saying that repealing DADT would impose “the most radical form of social experiments” on troops. A little history about Jackson. He claimed to be a DC resident and wanted to put the DC Marriage Equality Act to a vote on November’s ballot. He was shot down by both the DC Election Board and the Courts. But Jackson didn’t really live in DC as he claimed. Oh sure, there was an apartment in his name near downtown, but residents and the building manager never saw him once. He is under investigation for voter fraud. See, you cannot register to vote in DC unless you are a DC resident. Jackson lives in a McMansion in PG County, MD.

So, Asshats, answer a question for me –

Which is the gay soldier?

UPDATE: More evidence of McCain being an Asshat:

America’s Dumbest Columnist Writes America’s Dumbest Column

Who is America’s dumbest columnist? While there is a lot of competition, I contend that former Reagan official Jeffrey Lord from the American Spectator is America’s dumbest columnist. When we last saw him, he was arguing that Shirley Sherrod was lying about her uncle’s lynching because even though he was beaten to death by white law enforcement officers, he wasn’t actually hanged so it didn’t count. Well he’s back, weighing in on the Delaware Senate race.

Chris Coons, the freshly minted Democrat selected as Tea Party favorite and Republican nominee Christine O’Donnell’s opponent in the Delaware U.S. Senate race traveled to Africa in the 1980s — emerging as a committed leftist after volunteering for an organization supporting Black Liberation Theology.

The controversial religious philosophy espoused by radical left-wing activist James Cone and President Obama’s one-time spiritual mentor the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Black Liberation Theology is an off-shoot of liberation theology, a Marxist-driven interpretation of Christianity.

I’m surprised that Lord didn’t accuse Coons of being a “Kenyan anti-colonialist.” Yes, the most important part of Chris Coons’s bio is that he spent a semester abroad in Africa. But it’s being covered up, according to Jeffrey Lord (even though Coons mentions it often in appearances).

The Washington Post curiously says of Coons in their Coons profile only that he “spent time in South Africa and Kenya doing relief work.” The New York Times never mentions Coons’ work in Africa, choosing instead to describe him as an attorney and mentioning only his work with the homeless, the Investor Responsibility Center, and the “I Have a Dream” Foundation. Plus his educational background, a B.A. from Amherst, a law degree from Yale and a Master’s in Ethics from Yale Divinity School.

So, despite the fact that it was mentioned in media coverage, it’s being covered up. Plus, all that other stuff he’s done doesn’t count. However, we shouldn’t talk about what Christine O’Donnell said 10 years ago because it’s personal. This nonsense column goes on for 4 pages, arguing some kind of geographical convergence with some guy Jeffrey Lord doesn’t like.

You have to admire the rightwing sometimes. They’re allowed to take whatever fevered imaginings they have, turn it into a column and get paid by some prestigious magazine.

Tuesday Open Thread

Welcome to your Tuesday open thread. What’s happening today?

According the the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Great Recession ended in June 2009.

The Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research met yesterday by conference call. At its meeting, the committee determined that a trough in business activity occurred in the U.S. economy in June 2009. The trough marks the end of the recession that began in December 2007 and the beginning of an expansion. The recession lasted 18 months, which makes it the longest of any recession since World War II. Previously the longest postwar recessions were those of 1973-75 and 1981-82, both of which lasted 16 months.

In determining that a trough occurred in June 2009, the committee did not conclude that economic conditions since that month have been favorable or that the economy has returned to operating at normal capacity. Rather, the committee determined only that the recession ended and a recovery began in that month. A recession is a period of falling economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. The trough marks the end of the declining phase and the start of the rising phase of the business cycle. Economic activity is typically below normal in the early stages of an expansion, and it sometimes remains so well into the expansion.

The committee decided that any future downturn of the economy would be a new recession and not a continuation of the recession that began in December 2007. The basis for this decision was the length and strength of the recovery to date.

Does it feel like the recession is over? I think we actually need different economic descriptors because it’s just strange to say we’re not in a recession when unemployment is so stubbornly high.

A report released yesterday by the Justice Department takes the FBI to task for spying on activists groups with little or no justification. I’m sure you’ll be shocked to hear that most of these groups were left-leaning groups mostly peace & environmental activists.

The FBI in recent years opened investigations into some U.S. activists with little basis, unjustifiably extended the duration of the probes, improperly retained information about activist groups in its files, and classified its investigations of “nonviolent civil disobedience” as investigations into “acts of terrorism,” according to a report released today [1] (PDF) by the Justice Department’s Inspector General.

The FBI activities reviewed by the Justice Department took place from 2001 to 2006, and involved groups including the Thomas Merton Center (a Pittsburgh social justice center), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Greenpeace, The Catholic Worker (communities of religious pacifists) and a Quaker peace activist.

The report by the Justice Department watchdog didn’t find that the FBI targeted these groups on the basis of their free speech activities — which would be a serious violation [2] of FBI guidelines — but did fault the agency for other reasons, most notably a “factually weak” basis for opening investigations.

I don’t think the FBI has changed all that much from its J. Edgar Hoover days. It’s still chasing political grudges.

More Polling Goodness: Coons 54, Evil Witch from the West 39

A new Fox News poll (Warning: PDF)shows Chris Coons with a HUGE 54% to 39% lead over Christine O’Donnell (Insane) among likely voters. But if the evil impure Mike Castle had won the nomination, he would be leading Coons, 48% to 33%. Thanks Teabaggers.

60% believe Christine is not qualified to be a U.S. Senator. 59% believe Coons is qualified. Of those results, 17% believe O’Donnell is qualified, but not Coons (these are the teabaggers), 11% believe both are qualified, and 47% say Coons is qualified but not O’Donnell.

Interestingly, while 26% say their vote will be used to voice support for the Tea Party, 41% say their vote will be used to voice their vehement opposition to it. Twice as many people oppose the Teabaggers as support them: 21% strongly support the Tea Party, but 40% strongly oppose it. So the Teabaggers are motivating people to vote against them. LOL. Thanks, Teabaggers.

President Obama’s approval/disapproval rating is 45% to 46%

More Video From The JCC Candidate Forum

The News Journal posts more videos from the candidate forum. Part 1 of the debate is posted here.

Both Coons & O’Donnell speak on oil dependency. Coons supports alternative energy. O’Donnell says she supports alternative energy then contradicts herself

Both candidates speak on abortion. This was Coons’s strongest answers. He got a huge cheer in the overflow room when he answered. O’Donnell says she’s pro-life then says her sister had to have an abortion to save her life. It looks like the video cut off O’Donnell’s answer about supporting snowflake babies. Like most of her other answers O’Donnell is all over the place here.

Christine O’Donnell does not want to privatize social security, she seems to support Al Gore’s “lock box” and comments that we can raise the retirement age because Valerie Bertinelli appeared on the cover of AARP. Coons comments that privatization would be a disaster and speaks on the positive role that government can play.

On the education question O’Donnell supports charter school and says children shouldn’t be trapped in failing school systems. Coons expresses support for RTTT.

Hopefully the NJ will also release more video from the forum, especially the House candidates. You really should see Urquhart in action.

Bleg

Does anyone have a copy of yesterday’s State News (Dover)? We heard that Jonathan Moseley wrote a letter about how mean we are here at Delaware Liberal and how we’re lying about Christine O’Donnell. Can you send us a copy if you have one? We can’t respond unless we know what Moseley is saying. Just hit the “Got a Tip” button at the top or you can email me at unstableisotope@delawareliberal.net

Christine O’Donnell, As Described By Republicans

Think Progress started this list of descriptions of Christine O’Donnell by members of her own party. Let’s see if we can add to it.

Charles Krauthammer

Krauthammer calls O’Donnell supporters “disruptive and capricious.” On the September 13 edition of Special Report (retrieved from Nexis), Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer criticized endorsements of O’Donnell by Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) as “disruptive,” “capricious,” “irresponsible,” and “a big mistake.” He added, “O’Donnell is very problematic, she probably will lose.”

Karl Rove

“One thing that Christine O’Donnell is now going to have to answer in the general election that she didn’t have to answer in the primary is her own checkered background.” He later said: “I’ve met her. I’m not — I’ve got to tell you, I wasn’t, frankly, impressed as her, you know, abilities as a candidate. And again, these serious questions about how does she make her living, why did she mislead voters about her college education, how come it took her nearly two decades to pay her college bill so she could get her college degree. How does she make a living? Why did she sue a well-known and well-thought-of conservative think tank?” Rove went on to criticize “candidates who, at the end of the day, while they may be conservative in their public statements, do not evince the characteristics of rectitude and truthfulness and sincerity and character that the voters are looking for.”

GLENN BECK: “It’s creepy. … If you’re at a satanic alter, that’s a couple steps beyond witchcraft, dabbling in witchcraft. Is it just me?”

REP. MIKE PENCE (R-IN): “Certainly, she has some explaining to do about that.”

KARL ROVE: “[Delaware voters] are probably going to want to know what was that all about. … My view is she can’t simply ignore it. She’s got to deal with it and explain it and put it in its most sympathetic light and move on.”

JOE SCARBOROUGH: “You know, usually I like to say, ‘It happens,’ but this is just in a new realm. I’m a live and let live kind of guy but this is out there even for me.”

MICHAEL GERSON: “I think the reality here is that this adds to an aura of oddness.”

Let’s also not forget Delaware GOP leader Tom Ross’s description “delusional.”

According to Republicans, the following adjectives can be used to describe Christine O’Donnell:

  • problematic
  • checkered background
  • creepy
  • out there
  • odd
  • delusional
  • lacking character
