Walsh Leaves Office With Class

Filed in Delaware by on September 15, 2010

One of the upsets of the night was challenger Trinidad Navarro’s defeat of 30-year incumbent Sheriff Mike Walsh. We’ve reported several times that Walsh seemed to take the challenge as a personal insult. I guess we’re not going to see a kiss-and-make-up in this race.

Walsh, 72, has held the office since 1980, overseeing the distribution of court papers and administering real estate sales on foreclosures homes. He said he blames himself for the loss.

“My honest feeling is that I have severely let down the sheriff’s office, and I’ve let down the people of New Castle County to let the job of sheriff fall into his hands,” Walsh said. “I am ashamed of myself for allowing it to happen, although I worked hard.”

Classy!

I get the feeling that these guys really feel that elections are beneath them.

What a dilweed. Really, Walsh is exhibit A for why sheriff should not be an elected position.

  3. I know November is coming, but we need to stop putting cops in political office. Yeah sure, its just sheriff but those 4 in Dover aren’t doing us any favors.

Fair enough CR, but Walsh’s time really had come.

  5. At 74 you think his time has come, LG? If I was swinging the scythe he’d be pushing daisies at 65. Actually, I would have offed the office at the inception. Now, Trinny is gonna double dip and lordy knows how much worse. Now I listen to Chip Flowers:he’s going to change the dynamics of that office. What would stop Mr. Navaro from exceeding his new powers as well? More importantly, the question for both these primary winners is can Delaware afford their agendas?

  6. Huh. I see his strategy of demanding voters go to the polls to let him keep his job, because he likes it, didn’t work out.

For those who didn’t see it, I’m directly paraphrasing the pre-primary video Walsh had posted on his campaign site recently.

  7. LOL, Bill. Seriously, this was Walsh’s whole pitch.
