Whitestock Today

Filed in National by on August 28, 2010

Today is cult leader Glenn Beck’s gathering in D.C. for “Restoring Honor” or as some are calling it “Whitestock.” The festivities begin at 10 AM on the National Mall. The News Journal is there along with 550 people from Delaware. Apparently Christine O’Donnell is filming some kind of campaign video at the event as well. You can follow the NJ’s live tweets at http://twitter.com/@dialoguedel.

Jon Stewart did a segment on Whitestock, “I Have a Scheme” where he shows the megalomania of Beck. Yes, Beck is still comparing himself to MLK.

It’s just amazing to me that you would engage in racial hate speech on the 47th anniversary of MLK’s speech encouraging that people be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin.

I guess that proves that those are just pretty words to you, but not anything that you aspire to live by.

Meaning that you are representatives of the same old RACIST Democrat Party that has always existed in America — and that it is no accident that you Delaware Democrats sent Joe Biden, the racial gaffe machine, to the US Senate for decades.

  2. delacrat says:

The NewsJournal grants front page publicity to and will send a reporter to live-cover a right-wing event.

Yet, the last anti-war demo at the pentagon I went to, their only “mention” was a photo in the back pages of the far smaller “Gathering of Eagles” motorcycle gang counter-protest.

Two years from now, when america’s answer to Benito Mussolini, the media thug of his day, broadcasts from the the Oval office, you can have the “free” press to thank for it.

  3. MJ says:

Observer – see my previous comment on my blog entry. But if you’re too lazy to look at that, I’ll repeat it here – you are the biggest asshole in Delmarva.

Now, go back to DP or wherever it is you wank off and leave the adults alone to carry on some serious discussions.

TRANSLATION: How dare you hold us to our own standards! Leave us alone so we can espouse our racism and other hatred in peace.

  5. MJ says:

Better translation – you suck the air out of the room so no one can breathe. You bring absolutely nothing to the table. You twist and bend to further your fascist, right-wing view of America. You’d be better off somewhere else.

This kind of thing really torques me off. I apologize for the offtopic rant.

Delacrat, this begs the question … did you TELL the News Journal that you were going to this protest? Did you pick up the phone or send them an e-mail? They can’t read minds. And they generally don’t put national stuff like that on the front page unless there’s a local angle. The local Beckians attending provided that local angle – and it’s a sexy one, with the tea party types definitely on the rise. Antiwar protests have unfortunately become fairly routine.

I’ve worked in the media in various capacities, and it always amazes me just how incompetent most liberals are at getting media attention. A few observations (and suggestions):

    – They either don’t tell the press that they’re organizing something, or let them know at the last minute, and then express disbelief that they didn’t show up. As above, reporters can’t read minds. And they don’t have the time to read your blog or group’s e-mail newsletter from start to finish on a regular basis. So take pity on them and send an e-mail.

    – If they send out a press release or organize an event, it’s usually a day or two after a big national news event that they’re pegging it to, no one is saying anything new, and thus the press isn’t interested any more. Katie Ellis at the Delaware Democratic Party is the master of the utterly-useless-day-after-a-congressional-vote press release full of self-serving quotes from John Daniello. You may see that he’s rarely quoted in press coverage. That’s the reason why – in the modern media cycle, it’s old news by the time they send it out.

    – They e-mail a notice to one person at a newspaper instead of multiple people. If that person is out of the office on an assignment or on vacation, guess that? That’s just like not sending it at all. Free advice: Put together a list of e-mail addresses of every single reporter and editor you can find, regardless of what beats they cover. The more the merrier.

    – If they do manage to send an announcement out sufficiently in advance, their contact people don’t have the basic information that the media needs to plan, or simply don’t return phone calls. Contact people don’t have to be the organizers, but they do have to have the basic information and be available by cell phone.

    – The only people speaking at an event will be politicians, candidates and the usual suspects of activists and organizers. Those are the LAST people the press wants to talk to and quote. Get real people to illustrate your issues and concerns, who can talk plainly and quotably about their problems or complaints. Make sure these people agree to have their pictures taken. The politicians’ messages should be synchronized with the real people. (“Real People,” by the way, is a Gannett meme that its reporters despise – they’re under orders to get people with every story, no matter how stupid or tenuous the connection. If they have to go out on the street and talk to John Doe who doesn’t know piss-all about solar power, they’ll do it because they’re forced to. Make it easy on the News Journal’s reporters by provding those people up front. The reporters will love you for it.)

    – If they do manage to get the press to an event, the visuals will suck – look, people standing at a podium is NOT compelling photography or video. Put out a not-for-publication media advisory telling them just what the visuals will be (a model wind turbine, a stuffed pig with wings, a political candidate holding up a plastic bag of cash representing out-of-control spending, 50 people picketing a business, volunteers planting shrubs along a polluted waterway, etc.).

The Republicans are MUCH more savvy about all this. So stop whining, delacrat, and start writing press releases for your antiwar group.

  7. anon says:

Wow, that thing in DC is pretty offensive. I bet it accomplishes what Dems have failed to do – re-energize the Dem base, and remind people why it is so important to keep Republicans out of power. In particular it will drive GOTV in the cities. Thanks, Glenn and Sarah!

On the other hand, it also shows Obama’s centrism and lack of effective policy has created a leadership vacuum. Progressives failed to fill it, so teabaggers will.

  8. That’s really good advice anon.

  9. From what I’m hearing it sounds like the event was actually quite boring. I also read they confiscated signs before the rally.

  10. MJ says:

I wonder if Beck was able to see the crowd, seeing that he was standing “two flights lower” than Dr. King was in 1963.

  11. @MJ: There’s a slight riser before the two flights…

  12. I’m seeing a crowd estimate of 87,000 from CBS News.

  13. jason330 says:

87 million according to Fox News.

  14. June says:

Anon, will you handle the publicity for the Oct. 2 mass mobilization in DC because we have to get more people there than were there today with Glen Beck?

Come to Washington DC on October 2 for an emergency mobilization of all progressive movements at this critical moment!
Take our government back from big oil and the banks.
Stand up for the well-being and economic security of all our families.
Stand up against hatred, intolerance and immigrant-bashing.
Stand up for a society that works for all of us.
Cut military spending — fund jobs and human needs.
Peace abroad, renewable energy at home.
Demand the change that was promised!

All I can say is Pacem in Terris had a hard time finding a bus to charter. They’re all reserved already but mostly by the unions. We need to get the average person, like most of you on DL, to get to DC that day. But how do we get the word out?

  15. skippertee says:

    I went.
I was barefoot in hospital scrubs that tie at the waist with a broken strait-jacket serving as a cape.
I found some of those drops eye doctors use when they want to dilate your pupils and used them to apply occasionally. That way I didn’t stand out.
I met my friend,Rosie there. She poofed her hair out like she was holding a bobby-pin and stuck it into an electric socket? She wore a far-out looking blouse from the 60’s that had a plunging neckline emphasizing Rosie’s still impressive upper thoracic region. With a BALLET TU-TU! We wanted to be elected KING and QUEEN of the FREAK show.
When we were interviewed by the TEEVEE she was HIGH-VOLTAGE HANNAH from Hotlanta and I was the NATTERING NUTCASE from Newark.

  16. MJ says:

According to Michelle Bachmann, 1 million people were there. She told that to a crowd of 1000 people, according to the Washington Post. I’m sure Curly from WGMD will boast of how millions were there to reclaim America from the socialist menace that is taking over our country and destroying our way of life. YAWN!!!!

  17. AQC says:

June, maybe you could get the average person out if you didn’t offend them with your rabid progressive approach that excludes anyone who actually tries to put thought into subjects.

  18. delacrat says:

AQC, If you have nothing to say, don’t feel obligated to say anything.

  19. Frieda Berryhill says:

WHAT THE HELL IS “rabid” about that !!!!!!!!

Thanks Delecrat…..for telling him to contribute or stay away, there is enough of empty blathering goin on

  20. June is proposing real solutions. Thinking, deliberative Americans will pay attention. Plus, the whacky deficit hawk meme’s hypnotic effect over the populace is receding. A brand new Newsweek poll says 57% of us want more spending on jobs – screw the deficit.

  21. AQC says:

I agree with the progressive agenda. My problem is with the litmus test politicians are expected to pass in order to be considered progressive. Because an actual thinking politician tries to examine both sides of an issue he/she is alienated. Some progressives around here are as bad as the tea baggers, like those who believe I have nothing to say just because it doesn’t agree with their opinion.

  22. delacrat says:

AQC, You don’t know of any “progressive” “litmus tests” or anyone who was excluded because “they actually tries to put thought into subjects.”, If you did, you would have cited some examples. Since you can cite no facts to support your posts, you have nothing to say.

  23. AQC says:

Actually delacrat, you’re wrong. But, I won’t take the bait. And you simply proved my point that you are not willing to listen to ayone who disagrees with you. What does that make you?

  24. a.price says:

it’s best not to engage delcrat, AQC. It is just a lefTeaBag
