Debate Open Thread

Filed in National by on August 23, 2010

There are two primary debates occurring tonight.

One is a debate between Glen Urquhart and Michele Rollins at the Hockessin Memorial Hall.

The other debate is between Sheriff Mike Walsh and challenger Trinidad Navarro for the Democratic nomination to New Castle County Sheriff.

Use this thread to discuss the debates if you’re listening or attending in person.

  1. I’ve learned from Twitter:

Both millionaires Rollins & Urquhart can’t wait to repeal health care reform. Since they’re in touch with what normal Americans go through, of course.

Glen Urquhart, a Sussex developer who wants to represent Delaware in Congress is also running for the planning board in NYC. That’s why he knows that the Park51 project should go somewhere else.

  2. I didn’t seem to think from his answer that it was a federal issue. It was up to local planning and zoning. He said that at least 3 times. Try again U. I.

  3. If Urquhart thinks its a local issue then why the f’ should we care what he thinks about it? Why doesn’t he stand up for the 1st amendment or is he like other RWNJs who think the Constitution needs some trimming?

  4. skippertee says:

    Well,let’s see.
First off,in person,,Urquhart look’s like Jimmy Durante with just a little more hair.Put a pork-pie hat on him and he’d have an act. What a STIFF!How the fuck did this guy make money in real estate? Was it monopoly money? He DID seem to have the most supporters in the crowd.Wearing RED,URQUHART for CONGRESS T-shirts.
NOTE TO US:If he wins the primary and supporters continue wearing and handing out these RED T-shirts we should hammer [haha]them hard about the fact that they are in the exact SAME COLOR the COMMUNIST FLAG with the HAMMER and SICKLE once flew.

Instead of skippertee, let me be frank.
I was once Michelle Rollins “pool boy”.I owe her for the many things she taught me.As I’ve traveled through life, her lessons allowed me to acheive success beyond my wildest dreams.
Unfortunately, she didn’t give me one clue about business. They were only lessons in lovemaking.
I only left when she started dropping hints about offing old Ed.I liked him.So what if he had a thing for sheep. Most guys who grow up on farms seem to use these domestic animals instead of their hands.Who am I to judge?
My main reason for attending was to see if Michelle had turned into a GILF.Hey,times are tough and so is Michelle’s skin.

All three want to return the country to the “FREE ENTERPRISE” system we had before “BIG GOVERNMENT” OBAMA and the demon PELOSI took over and led our fair maiden into DEFECITS.

Hockessin and the surrounding Pike Creek Valley was once a pristine and bucolic wonderland for a young lad such as me.I spent many a summer day exploring throughout this area before,as Joni Mitchell puts it so succinctly,”They paved Paradise, and put up a parking lot”.
    I’d love to go back.
There’s NO WAY I want to go back to the FREE ENTERPRISE system that has brought us this current debacle!

I couldn’t make it to the Hockessin debate. The only suspense was whether Urk would say something off the wall, or if he would goad Rollins into making some gaffe. Especially since the event didn’t seem to be broadcast anywhere, so I wonder if they spoke a little more freely. It would be nice if an audio turns up. I never figured out who was sponsoring the debate, so I don’t know where to look. It was weird how that debate didn’t get any real publicity, not even from the candidates.

The sheriff’s debate was unwatchable. I kept wishing for other candidates.

  6. Geezer says:

There’s an old joke: Q: “Why are debates between academics so vicious?” A: “Because there’s so little at stake.” I believe this applies to the sheriff’s debate as well.

  7. anon,

I heard the debate was sponsored by the Community News.

  8. DownstateD says:

I read the article about the debate and the NY “mosque” position taken by Urkie. This is yet another example of him being a hypocrite. Nearly EVERYONE down here in Sussex opposed his Issac’s Glen project and considered it a slap in our faces, but did that stop him for forging ahead with it? Now, he seems to think it is a fine idea to deny someone else’s property rights to build a quasi-religious facility because his feelings are hurt. Typical RWNJ attitude: my property rights are absolute, but I have no problem denying yours.

  9. Exactly Downstate – a project should be stopped if it hurts HIS feelings, no one else’s. Of course, the opposition to Park51 is about anti-Muslim prejudice since they’re assigned collective guilt to non-Muslims.

  10. The Republicans’ debate for the House really packed the fire house last night and Michelle Rollins came off way ahead of the pack. I took some notes and will be posting about it with photos later.

Urky is pretty quirky but did come off as sincere if not too bright…or was that just his dogged allegience to wingnut talking points that dulled his wit?

O’Donnell mostly whined about Castle’s alleged refusal to ‘appear on the same panel with her’.

Sorry, but that was a lousy job of publicity.
