‘Bulo’s Adrenalin-Fueled Music For the Masses-Part I
Every year, WXPN-FM, the public radio station affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, does an 885 Music Countdown of some sort, and enlists the ballots of its listeners. This year’s theme is the 885 Ultimate Road Trip Songs. For me, that means songs that make me want to roll down the window, bash the steering wheel, scream and shout at the top of my lungs, and delight and/or annoy other drivers on the road.
Allow me to share my ballot with you. Counting down from #10…
10. The Black Crowes- “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution”
9. The Ramones- “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue”
8. Mott the Hoople- “All the Way From Memphis”
7. The Pretenders- “Middle of the Road”
6. Martha & the Vandellas- “Heat Wave”
Back tomorrow with my Top 5. Be sure to bring your heart medicine…

Hey, “Dancing in the Streets” by M&V uses actual tire chains being slammed against a wooden board for percussive effect.
Can’t get much closer to the road than that.

Of all the outstanding Ramones titles, you come up with “..Glue”?
Joey’s ditching his works (from the grave). Keyrist! Their version of
Spiderman is even better than that!

Kurward…snow tires don’t make me want to hit the road. Great song, though.
Cyclone…enjoyed the Spidey theme, really cool! But, ‘Sniff’ was an original.
And, hey, it’s my list. Lemme see yours, guys. Seems like there might be some real good stuff on them.

Cyclone Ranger sent me some real good picks. If you give me 10 in Countdown format, Cyc, I’ll guest-post ‘em.
BTW, I’m a huge Husker Du fan. ‘Makes No Sense At All’ would’ve made my list, except I’ve had that song on two other countdowns and didn’t want to get stuck in a rut.

Thanks for acknowledging, Bulo. Certain parameters must be set tho’,no? We could pick a decade, a country or style/rhythm.
I was just trying to lay out some East Coast jam. As others here have noted (under my real name) when I go out I go ALL the way out. Set the table and I’ll serve it. American,German,Irish, brit. Hardcore, rock, rap or pop.I want my MTV or Ipod. Hit me with the limits. I absolutely LOVE this game. Music fills hearts, well, I got some songs from Belfast that could set fires.I wish we all could follow Johnny Lennon. Not I. Agent Orange. Social Distortion. Soul Asylum. Sublime (waiting for my ruca)BAD BRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I throw this out there please. Its another song by Philadelphia’s own The Goats. I may or may not be in this video but why I’m posting will reveal. The album was is storyline to George H.W. Bush’s presidency in particular to the Gulf War. If you can bear a little rap you might find, as I did, that they could have wrote this in 2002.

A great list by the Cyclone Ranger. If you haven’t heard Social Distortion, you’re missing out. I’m gonna try to put this list together for your viewing and listening pleasure in the next few days.
In the meantime, tune in tom’w for my Top 5.

Thanks again, Sleepwalker. I wish I had paid attention. Neither Squeeze nor XTC are the “bash the steering wheel, scream and shout at the top of my lungs, and delight and/or annoy other drivers”.
FAIL.

Well, that was just the direction that I chose. The XPN parameters are more nebulous and open to a myriad of ideas. Sadly, based on the lists at http://www.xpn.org, it’s shaping up like just another classic rock marathon. Witha lotsa ‘on the road’ songs.
Although, at least we’ll likely be spared the typically two-dozen ‘Die’ Dar ‘Die’ Williams tracks that usually pollute these countdowns. (Standard disclaimer: Don’t really want Dar Williams to die, it’s her music I want extinguished. Along with Tori Amos’.)

Cool. That kind of cover is not usually my cup of tea, but that one works.
