Words Are Made to Bend

The Overton Window is perhaps one of the most overused memes in political blogs, but it is a good way to look at what is acceptable as public policy by the general populace. The problem is that the fringe right pushes this window to nonsensical and outlandish views of the world — imagine Pee-Wee’s Playhouse hosted by Glenn Beck.

Recently in Unstable Isotope’s post, “NOAA: Man-Made Global Warming is Unmistakable”, Republican David wrote the following:

If we don’t have global warming, we will need to invent it to prevent the next ice age. Global warming is good. It gives better crop yields and is helpful to most plants and therefore life on earth. It would be nice if we could claim credit for something good in the ecology. Usually we are messing something up.

As I read something like this that is so utterly jaw-droppingly stupid, I wonder what is next for the lunatic asylum know as the Tea Party. How about this? The next time a “family values” Republican gets caught being gay like Roy Ashburn of California, the bloggers from the Land of Make Believe can say:

Yes, Roy Ashburn might be gay, but he voted against gay rights. Don’t you see, Republicans can vote against something even when it goes against their best interests.

  1. jason330 says:

How about…”It is self evident that the wealthy are more virtuous than the middle class, and therefor are deserving of their wealth (especially inherited wealth) and a disproportionately lower tax burden than the middle class.” ?

Although, you don’t have to invent outlandishly ludicrous positions. Most of them have already been spoken by our local wingnut philosophers.

  2. Yeterday Kos did a series of tweets about the record high temperatures in Moscow (100) Pakistan (128) etc. this year.

Frying the fields? Sea level rising over Delaware crop lands….etc. Wingnuttery is the willfully stupid taking of jabs for jabs sake and they are jabs with no rhyme or reason to boot.

  3. How about “9/11 first responders courageously ran into collapsing buildings to save lives, that’s why we’re denying funding for illnesses caused by the toxic fumes and dust from the tragedy. The GOP is courageous & principled, just like first responders.” Isn’t that right Mike Castle?
