Shocker: Al & Tipper Gore Are Separating

Filed in National by on June 1, 2010

Well, you could knock me down with a feather:

Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, are separating after 40 years of marriage.

According to an e-mailed statement obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, the Gores said it was “a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration.”

Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider confirmed the statement came from the Gores, but declined to comment further.

Best wishes to the Gores. Forty years is a long time and I hope they are able to work things out.

  1. Bill & Hillary are still together, but Al & Tipper are divorcing. This does not compute.

  2. anon says:

    After 40 years, why bother?

  3. Mark H says:

Why do we think we know anything about a politician, anyhow? We know nothing of the marriage between the Clintons nor do we know anything about the marriage between the Gores.

  4. Perry says:

    I am also shocked, UI.

We don’t have enough details to understand the reasons, but the breakup of any marriage, especially one of 40 years, brings sadness to me.

I suspect the sacrifices and extra-marital diversions inherent in long periods of separation, especially for public figures, takes a toll on some, in due time.

The Edwards’ marriage is another case in point.

Moreover, the losses inherent in long marriages, having broken apart, may not be realized, or appreciated, until more years have passed. Then painful regret can set in.

The bitterness as well, one would hope that it can be contained, in contrast to the Edwards’ situation.

And then there are the children, grown up or not; it’s terribly hard, as relationships can never be quite the same, regardless.

Let this be a lesson to work on our own marriages, harder!

Al HAS been hanging around some pretty attractive early-20s hippie-chicks… who’s music Tipper tried to ban in the 80s. Im not sayin there was an affair.. I dont think Al is exciting enough to cheat. Maybe he just noticed he could do better than a rock and roll hating ice queen. (sorry ladies… i have a problem with anyone wno wants to censor music/art under the banner of “WE MUST PROTECT OUR CHILDREN”… it shows they are a poor parent for losing their kids to Dee Snyder’s influence.

  6. I doubt anyone in their early 20s would have had their music banned by Tipper Gore in the 80s. According to another HuffPo article, friends of the Gores said they’ve drifted apart. He travels a lot and she has her own interests. I guess I’d rather it be that than some affair by either one of them.

  7. nemski says:

If Al Gore was boffing some PR lacky from BP, I’ll be really pissed.

  8. MJ says:

I can see this and it’s good that it’s on “good terms.” Some people fall out of love. Some stick it out, but others decide to end it. I wish them both the best.

  9. cassandra_m says:

If I remember correctly, Prince’s “Darling Nikki” was Ground Zero of Tipper’s music crusades…..

  10. nemski says:

And Frank Zappa, Cassandra, don’t forget about Zappa. He led the fight against Tipper Gore.

  11. a.price says:

i’m in my early 20’s and i LOVE most of the music Tipper tried to kill.

  12. Another Mike says:

I’ll have to head over to my mom’s house to see if any of the album covers have those dreaded PMRC stickers on them. Maybe some Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

  13. donviti says:

now she go back to trying to trying to ban free speech and limit rap music

  14. anonone says:

Because this is so important. Besides, it distracts the Delaware Liberals from blogging about Obomba’s failing Presidency.

  15. cassandra_m says:

If you don’t like what’s on offer here, you can start your own damn blog so you can whinge to your hearts content that Barack Obama is not Your Own Personal Magic Negro. But until you are serving up your own damn content, you can shut the fuck up about what people spend their time blogging about.

  16. anonone says:

A little more sensitive than usual today, Ms M.? Maybe you can explain why Al and Tipper are so important relative to everything else that is going on in the world.

  17. She never tried to ban any music. In fact she pretty much won the labeling battle and the music didn’t go away. What did happen is once we had truth in labeling it helped create a huge market for family friendly music. She helped grow the marketplace not shrink it.

As for the divorce, it is a tragedy. I wish both of them the best and echo Perry’s sentiment. It is a reminder to never take our marriages for granted.

  18. MJ says:

As usual, A1 adds nothing to the discussion. How did you ever get out of elementary school? Was it a social advancement because it’s just plain weird having an 18-year old in 3rd grade?

  19. a.price says:

anonone, most people dont spend every instant of their day their day crying about how the president lied to them personally…. well, one guy did and his name was Charles Guiteau.

  20. cassandra_m says:

Maybe you can explain how it is that you have so many ohsosuperior things to do that you are actually here whinging that we are not doing ohsosuperior things that you want. Just go get your own damn blog and you can — you know — get your ohsosuperiour lying ass the audience you deserve.

  21. Cassandra didn’t write this post – I did. I thought it was interesting and something people might want to discuss. The nice thing about blogs is you can pick and choose your content. If you don’t want to read about the Gores’ divorce, you are free to ignore the thread.

Seriously, if you don’t like the content it’s big, wide blog world out there. Keep looking, I’m sure you’ll find your place. If you want to start a rival blog that has better content, go ahead.

  22. anonone says:

This Al-Tipper thing has really affected you folks, hasn’t it? Well, then, I send my condolences and I hope you get better soon.

  23. cassandra_m says:

That wouldn’t be an explanation of why you persist in the juvenile wanking on how this blog doesn’t suit your needs rather than just starting your own. You know — one where you would not have to hear about Al Gore and you could find your audience amongst those who share your grief that your Own Personal Magic Negro does not perform as commanded.

But then again, everyone knows you are a lying idiot, A1.

  24. a.price says:

he is also upset about not being named Ambassador to France.

  25. anonone says:

Really, too bad for Al and Tipper and I hope you get better soon.

  26. mike hunt says:

Guess Global Warming is not in thier house…more like Global Cooling!

  27. cassandra_m says:

The wanker A1 is still here? Apparently he still can’t be bothered to find a blog that does what he wants.

But we always knew he was lazy, too.

  28. anonone says:

You should really stop trying to hijack UI’s thread, cassandra_m. This is about Tipper and Al, not you and me.

  29. I’m not sure “affected” is the right word. Just surprised. When people are in the public a lot, you feel like you know them (of course you don’t). I guess I remember the passionate kiss that Al laid on Tipper at the 2000 convention – it did seem like their marriage was real. I think I feel the normal amount of sadness as I would with any couple I hear of splitting up after 40 years of marriage.

  30. It was real unless everyone who knew them lied. That was 10 years ago. Things change. Love can grow cold if taken for granted.

  31. AQC says:

    who cares?

  32. cassandra_m says:

Affected or not doesn’t especially matter to the point that the liar A1 decided to have a wank about how no one here writes what he wants. Apparently he won’t be manning up any time soon to go off and do better elsewhere.

It doesn’t matter to this asshole that it could be a surprise that two people who used to be seen as real stability in a world without much could decide to part ways. But I’m sure we’ll be reading about something more serious in his own blog.

What’s the name of that again?

  33. pandora says:

Well. lord knows, he has the time to start a blog.

  34. Joey C says:

PMRC offended me.That censorship drive cost labels money and many bands contracts. Thankfully, Al invented the internet for his release from that beast Tipper. 10 will get you 20 she lines up behind Palin. Blech!

  35. anonone says:

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

  36. delacrat says:

Al’s pick of Holy Joe Lieberman for a running mate, cost him my vote.

  37. jason330 says:

    It cost him the election.

  38. Actually it almost won him the election. Look at the polls. He brought balance to the ticket.

  39. Geezer says:

Poor dumb David. Yes, let’s look at the polls. From Wikipedia:

“The announcement of Lieberman’s selection was unusual in that it did not cause a positive “bump” in the Gore campaign’s poll numbers according to a Newsweek poll done at the time.[21] Polling also indicated that Lieberman had badly lost his televised debate against Dick Cheney,[22] leading some to suggest later that Gore had lost the election due to choosing Lieberman as his running mate[23]”

It’s from Wikipedia, but as you can see, it’s all footnoted. You can just make shit up on your own blog, but not here.

  40. anonone says:

It didn’t cost him the election. The republickins on the Supreme Court stole the election for George W. Bush. Never forget.

  41. Geezer says:

Fair enough, A1. But without Lieberman, maybe it’s not close enough to let Antonin Scalia get his filthy paws on it.

  42. I don’t think Lieberman had much of an effect on the election. I think the effect of VP candidates is overstated, really.

  43. arthur says:

It happens a lot in marriages…he’s hot and she’s cold
