Christine O’Donnell’s Legal Woes

Filed in National by on March 20, 2010

Poster anon brings our attention to this article in the News Journal about Christine O’Donnell. The article details O’Donnell’s various legal and money issues.

But while she was courting voters, she amassed thousands of dollars in campaign debt, was confronted by the IRS about unpaid income taxes and sold her Wilmington home to a campaign staffer to avoid a sheriff’s sale ordered to settle mortgage claims, a News Journal investigation shows.

I love this quote by O’Donnell:

“I think the fact that I have struggled financially is what makes me so sympathetic,” O’Donnell said.

Like most Republicans, nothing is ever her fault.

“This type of malicious behavior from supporters of a desperate career politician is to be expected because he cannot defend his big spending, liberal voting record,” O’Donnell said Friday when asked about past legal troubles. “Just because the lords of the backroom have an obnoxious sense of entitlement to promote one of their own, doesn’t mean their gutter politics are in the best interests of the voters.”

Her legal debt problems are detailed in the article, but here’s a summary.

– She has an almost $12,000 tax lien from the IRS from 2005
– She has a campaign debt of $24,000. She has raised $11,000 for this race so far.
– She has an upaid settlement to her alma mater of Fairleigh Dickinson which dates back to 1994. Fairleigh Dickinson is withholding her degree. Is she reporting herself as a college graduate in her resume?
– She lives in a house owned by a campaign staffer. At least half of her rent is paid by her campaign donations.
– She had a well-known dispute with a previous employer, ISI. She sued them for gender discrimination and they accused her of running a for-profit PR business on the company’s time. That suit has been dropped by O’Donnell.
– A house she bought in Hockessin went into foreclosure. She owed $90,000 on the house. The house was about to be sold by auction when she sold it to Brent Vasher, her boyfriend at the time for $135,000.

O’Donnell stands no chance of winning. I think Mike Castle will continue to ignore O’Donnell and focus his fire on Chris Coons.

O’Donnell has the Protackian ability to shrug off failure and dishonor and keep running.

Her Reality Distortion Field is strong.

As long as she is pro-life she will always have her handful of supporters who don’t care about anything else.

  2. anon says:

Also, the fact that the News Journal has awoken from its deathbed to write a well-done, detailed investigative article about the very minor candidate Christine O’Donnell, shows the Castle machine cranking up to clear the field.

No way does Castle want to appear on a debate stage with this young energetic woman attacking him from the right, even if she is debt-ridden and her campaign hopeless. Nor does he want to spend the season ducking debates with her.

I wouldn’t exactly call it a hit job, since it appears to be credible and well-deserved. But it is an unusual effort by the News Journal.

With this article, investigative reporting for this Senate race has likely peaked. Unless they crank it up for Coons too.

One thing is for sure, Castle will never receive this kind of detailed investigation.

Can’t wait for Republican David’s defense, which I’ll wager involves his invoking Christian forgiveness. Care to comment on Christine’s “judgement,” David? Or maybe the judgments against her?

  4. anon says:

Opposition research intends to uncover embarrassing information that will alienate you from your supporters. But if you are running a vanity campaign without any real supporters, you are immune. That is the secret of O’Donnell’s and Protack’s durability.

  5. frediam says:

I am guessing this year she is going to try and collect as much tea party money as possible to pay off her bills and debt. didn’t she just get back from a foreign country? her financial life is a mess and she some how found money to travel. Are you kidding me that alone should disqualify her and i am sure that the people she owes money were glad to see her traveling and enjoying herself. Ignore O’Donnell.

  6. Concerned says:

Here you go again, bashing another Republican for some contrived reason while leaving the same exact issues about your Dem buddies like Karen Stewart alone. O’Donnell’s financial history is nothing compared to Stewarts who lived off men and borrowed money for a lot of years that she never paid back and got sued for. What a coincidence it all got paid off as soon as she was elected. Not from her own funds either since she never worked and had none. You people are really pathetic. That’s probably why the lot of you have no credibility whatsoever except in your own minds.

Hey Concerned — you got some proof of your allegations here? Emails? Financial? Tax returns? Something other than your usual kvetching?

Because as long as you got nothing to demonstrate any of this there is nothing any of us can do. And don’t even think of telling us that we should be looking at this. Unless you are planning to pay one of us to do it. Because I, for one, am not giving up my job to just track KWS.

And as long as all you’ve got are complaints and unsubstantiated allegations, you are just another troll here. If you have something serious, you need to arrange to pass that on to one of us and it gets published. All of that data that turned up in the NJ article for O’Donnell — you need to get for KWS.

Which you don’t have apparently. Because here you are thinking that just whinging that we are somehow protecting her will get us to, you know, do what you are too lazy to do.

    Just go away.

  8. Concerned says:

Cassandra: You and your cohorts and the WNJ and the whole collection of Delaware Dem party hacks are just as corrupt as the incumbents and Dem hopefuls you’re protecting. You know damn well if O’Donell were a fellow Dem this story would never have been published. Just like you all know the evidence against Stewart is out there now like it was when she ran for office. It was suppressed then the same way its being suppressed now. Hope you sanctimonious assholes are real proud of yourselves. Journalistic intergrity is obviously not a concept you’re familiar with.

  9. cassandra m says:

The only hack here is you, Concerned.

If you got something, send it and we’ll post it. Otherwise you got as good as you are going to get here, which is an airing of your outrage that this woman got this office. A thing most of us can’t quite believe either — but I hear recitations of this woman’s presumed atrocities and shortcomings all over town and you know what? They are all like you — all complaint and nothing to back it up.

So cough up something we can use or you can just continue to stew in your own juices.

  10. This is rich. It is all a non-issue. Stick up your nose because you had some good fortune. So she sold her home because she could no longer afford it. Is that what you are suppose to do? Go Christine. I have a statement from Christine that I will post on Delawarepolitics in a few minutes.

  11. Squirrely says:

    Damn liberal opossums.

  12. anon says:

    High grass, weeds, opossums…

I think she might be a redneck.

  13. That alone should qualify her for the nomination. LOL In your face, Possum hating left wing loons. The fact that you are discussing such trivia shows why liberals have no place leading a government.

  14. cassandra_m says:

I don’t know. repubs still have a bug up their collective asses about Tim Geither’s tax issues — issues he cleared up immediately, that didn’t involve IRS liens on his property, and did I mention that he paid his bills? Seems to me to be a nice double standard in the works here.

Seems like we have two sets of personal responsibility standards here — one for repubs and one for Democrats.

  15. Phuny says:

Concerned, you don’t have to go far to find the KWS background info…

It’s all here on the DL, from back when she was the bad democrat in the primary. Once she won the primary all that was forgot, but it still exists in the archives.

  16. cassandra_m says:

Phoney, you could surprise us Just Once and keep the thread of the conversation. But I guess you need to stop cutting and pasting your usual bullshit to do that. Concerned (and a few others) don’t think we are doing *enough* to expose KWS as a fraud. This is tough for you to get — so read slowly — we aren’t just going to repeat unsupported allegations. That would be wingnut behavior and since that isn’t exactly working for you, why would we repeat your failures?

  17. bamboozer says:

    Delawares Sarah Palin/Michelle Bachman dethroned???
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!. Tis a pity as she surely would have taked votes from tall, baldold and ugly.(Delaware!,Dealware!, same old song and it’s Delaware!)

  18. Just a speedbump. It is good enough for KWS why not Christine O’Donnell?

  19. Squirrely says:

The point of the “liberal opossum conspiracy” note is that she even blamed the opossums infestation on somebody else, in this case, her unnamed neighbors who she claimed in the article were feeding them.

  20. “I think Mike Castle will continue to ignore O’Donnell and focus his fire on Chris Coons.”

I’m not so sure that he’s ignoring O’Donnell. Someone is gunning for her, and I doubt that it’s a Democrat; her primary run against Castle makes her a near-ally of Coons and Spencer. It would be interesting to learn who prompted the News Journal to launch an “investigation” on a candidate who, most agree, has no chance.

  21. cassandra_m says:

But a candidate who is perennially a thorn in the side of her party. That is probably the clue as to where it comes from.

And what is up with the News Journal printing this kind of investigative stuff on a Saturday, anyway? Ginger Gibson is doing good work here….
