Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to this beautiful weekend! My yard is now 100% snow free and it feels like springtime. I hope everyone is out and about enjoying the weather.

Wolf Blitzer apologized for his “Department of Jihad?” chyron in the CNN broadcast:

“CNN had no intention of suggesting that the Justice Department supports terrorism,” he said. “Lawyers at the Justice Department are patriotic Americans, and we certainly regret any confusion that may have been caused by our graphic.”

Blitzer referenced the storm of criticism the segment set off on Twitter, which was initiated by Salon columnist Glenn Greenwald.

The Cheney ad has been sharply criticized by many high-profile attorneys and organizations including the American Bar Association.

Liz Cheney’s and Bill Kristol’s attacks are so vile that even the conservative blog Powerline (“Bush is an underappreciated genius”) has criticized them.

Can you believe it – a news organization actually did some fact-checking! In this case, ABC News fact-checked Stupak’s claims that the health care reform bill would fund abortions and shockingly concludes that’s he’s wrong. I know, I can hardly believe it either.

The DNC is also hammering the Republicans over their ridiculous fundraising powerpoint presentation where they admitted they are selling fear to their reactionary base.

The Ghost Whisperer

DADT repeal has been a hot topic this year, and surprisingly uncontroversial. The repeal is supported by more than 70% of Americans. John McCain has become one of the leaders in Congress against DADT-repeal. At one point during the hearing, McCain showed a letter which he claimed had been retired military officers against the repeal. A group called Servicemembers United researched McCain’s letter and found it was not quite as compelling as McCain represented it to be.

However, a new Servicemembers United report obtained in advance by DC Agenda severely undermines the legitimacy of this letter. Some of the problems:

– The average age of the officers is 74. The “oldest living signer is 98, and several signers died in the time since the document was published.” Servicemembers United Executive Director Alex Nicholson added that only “a small fraction of these officers have even served in the military during the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ period, much less in the 21st century military,” so it’s hard to believe that they “know how accepting and tolerant 18- and 21-year-olds are today.”

– “At least one signer, Gen. Louis Menetrey, was deceased when the letter was published and didn’t sign the document himself. According to a footnote on the letter, his wife signed the document for him after his death using power of attorney — six years after Alzheimer’s disease robbed him of the ability to communicate.”

– One signatory said that they “no longer want to be a part of the letter, writing to the organization, ‘I do not wish to be on any list regarding this issue.‘”

– Multiple generals said they “never agreed” to sign the letter in the first place, writing “I never agreed. To represent either side of this issue” and “I do not remember being asked about this issue.”

– At least seven officers “were involved in scandals tarnishing their careers.” Gen. Carl Mundy, for instance, gained negative publicity when he told CBS’s 60 Minutes that “minority officers do not shoot as well as the non-minorities.”

In June 2009, a PBS’s Ray Suarez also did a report on the letter, reporting, “The NewsHour contacted a number of four-star officers requesting an interview for this story. However, none agreed to speak to us on camera. One general expressed surprise his name was even on the list, since he says he had never agreed to sign the letter, and at least three officers listed as signatories are dead.”

So, to recap – the signatories are mostly elderly (not surprising given the generational gap in perceptions of LGBT); not all signatories actually signed; not all are distinguished and not all are even alive.

Nice work John McCain! Seriously though, has there ever been a more pathetic sight than the fall of John McCain? Just over one year ago, he was the man who might be president. Now, he’s the anti-gay ghost whisperer – conservative backbencher who stands a good chance of losing his Senate seat.

Never Underestimate the Capacity of the GOP to shoot itself in the foot..

….with the younger generation. The vast majority of Americans under the age of 30 do not care one bit about conservative fearmongering concerning gay marriage and “special rights” for gays. Indeed, they support a wild notion that there should be equality for all. And just when you think the GOP was leaving the socially conservative wedge issues behind and embracing populism, Virginia’s Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) opened his bigoted mouth.

[Cuccinelli] has urged the state’s public colleges and universities to rescind policies that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, arguing in a letter sent to each school that their boards of visitors had no legal authority to adopt such statements. In his most aggressive initiative on conservative social issues since taking office in January, Cuccinelli (R) wrote in the letter sent Thursday that only the General Assembly can extend legal protections to gay state employees, students and others — a move the legislature has repeatedly declined to take as recently as this week. […]

Cuccinelli’s move has dismayed students and faculty members. It suggests that Cuccinelli intends to take a harder line with the state’s university system, where liberal academics have long coexisted uneasily with state leaders in Richmond. […]

Colleges that have included such language in policies that govern university hiring and admissions — which include all of Virginia’s largest schools — have done so “without proper authority” and should “take appropriate actions to bring their policies in conformance with the law and public policy of Virginia,” Cuccinelli wrote. […]

“What he’s saying is reprehensible,” said Vincent F. Callahan Jr., a former Republican member of the House of Delegates who serves on George Mason’s board of visitors. “I don’t know what he’s doing, opening up this can of worms.”

I understand the point that the Virginia General Assembly has not passed a law like Delaware’s anti-discrimination law. But that does not and should not mean that Virginia’s colleges and universities must discriminate against gays and lesbians, which is what Cuccinelli is basically saying. He is saying it is not illegal in Virginia to discriminate against gays and lesbians, so the colleges and universities in Virginia should have at it, discriminate to their hearts’ content. This proactive action in the form of his direct advice in that letter reveals this. He could have simply let sleeping dogs lie. But I suppose it was not enough that gays and lesbians in Virginia are unprotected against discrimination in the work place and in their daily lives. He had to make sure gay and lesbian students knew their place as well.

Seriously, what is with conservatives and their hatred of homosexuality? Unless and until the GOP deals with this demon, the future outlook demographically for the GOP is disastrous. Yeah, they have got the haters now, but when they die off, and they will, they got no one.
