Wednesday Open Thread

Welcome to Wednesday. It’s time for your open thread, so let’s get started.

What’s worse than bad rap? Bad conservative rap!

I love the part when he’s going on about pies. Why? Oh, and if you got through the whole thing – congratulations, you have a strong will.

Now for something uplifting. Roger Ebert regains his voice. This is really amazing:

If you haven’t read the Esquire article on Ebert, I highly recommend it.

No last call in Delaware casinos?

    By Bruce Pringle
    Delaware State News

DOVER — In many casinos, a gambler can enjoy a Tequila Sunrise at sunrise.

In Delaware casinos, however, the hours in which alcohol may be served are the same as in the state’s restaurants: 9 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Delaware’s Video Lottery Advisory Council recommends a change in that rule, saying Dover Downs, Harrington Raceway and Delaware Park could provide “a total entertainment environment” if their bars operated around the clock, as is the case in Atlantic City, N.J.

But you might not want to bet your beer money on the council’s recommendation being adopted.

“Quite honestly, this is one (proposal) I would say probably would not happen,” Thomas J. Cook, acting state finance director, told the council Tuesday.

Public safety would be an issue, Mr. Cook said, and other alcohol-serving establishments would be at a competitive disadvantage if they still had to halt sales at 1 a.m.

The proposed change would need the approval of the General Assembly.

Mr. Cook appeared before the council to respond to its annual state-required report on how to make Delaware’s casinos more successful. Besides seeking longer alcohol- service hours, the latest report calls for greater fi nancial support from the state and for an end to a ban on casino operations on Easter and Christmas.

    Mr. Cook made no promises.

    Calling all dropouts:

Senator Colin Bonini’s Campaign School, which was snowed out in February, has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 27 at Wesley College in Dover. If you would like to attend, email Dave Tise at davetise@gmail.com

  3. Speaking of the State Senator, I am going to be a panelist with Colin Bonini, John Flaherty and Greg Lavelle on March 17th in Dover for the Delaware Coalition For Open Government. We are going to discuss the GA bills to force a 72 hour window for everyone to get a chance to read through the budget before the vote at the end of June.

  4. liberalgeek says:

Nancy – How does that bill account for changes that might be desirable after 72 hours of review?

So if on June 27th a budget bill is posted and on June 29th an issue is discovered that gets enough people’s hackles up that it warrants a change to the budget, does the clock start over on the 72 hours? Just curious…

YO 330….Very cool letter-to-the-ed in the Snooze yesterday. Entertaining, informative, and stylishly well written.

Please see if DL will publish it on the blog…in case anyone missed it.

Keep up the good work….more letters (from everyone) the better. src

On the Roger Ebert story, which I love by the way, I’d like to point out that there is a small software company here in Delaware that has a similar technology that they are developing under the name “Model Talker”. Model Talker is targeted at ALS sufferers that are likely going to lose their voice, but this would be another potential application.

The company is one of our sponsors, AgoraNet, but they have not paid me for this advertisement. 🙂

  7. I don’t know how many of you read the very funny blogger Jon Swift. It’s being reported today that he unexpectedly and suddenly died. He will be greatly missed.

Nancy, you’re assuming the legislators can read that fast 🙂

Democrat Eric Massa to retire amid allegations he sexually harassed a male staffer
    Politico ^ | 3/3/10

Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) will not seek re-election after only one term in office.

According to several House aides – on both sides of the aisle – the House ethics committee has been informed of allegations that Massa, who is married with two children, sexually harassed a male staffer.

Massa and his office did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but his office has scheduled a press conference for later this afternoon.

Massa, a 20-year Navy veteran, was elected to office last November. He serves on the Agriculture, Armed Services and Homeland Security committees.

(outed for being a no vote on HCR?)

  10. From his press conference it sounds like Massa had a 3rd recurrence of his cancer and it may be terminal.

  11. liberalgeek says:

Mark – actually, it assumes that you and I can read that fast. The idea is that the budget analysis could be crowd-sourced. I suppose that is possible, with 500 people, all with different agendas, looking at their pet projects (maybe education funding, maybe legislative travel budgets) and raising issues with those expenditures.

  12. liberalgeek says:

Romeo – isn’t it equally possible that the aide that was harassed was gay and the Navy veteran was harassing him about it?

  13. romeo says:

LG, there is no shortage of possibilities.

Massa claims he uses “salty language” in private but there was no harassment.

he could have been ragging on the gay guy
he could have been hitting on the gay guy who wasn’t interestd
he could have been hitting on the straight guy
he could have been fooling around with Pat and know one’s sure which way to call it (an SNL reference)
or it could all be rumor and inuendo and he is really retiring because of cancer.

Reminder, Progressive Dems for Delaware meet at 7:00 Tonight at DelDems HQ (19 E. Commons Blvd, New Castle 19720)

John Flaherty is coming to review progressive legislation in this session of the GA.

Gemma Buckley will lead discussions on non-partisan reapportionment, publicly funded elections, and Citizens United v FEC ruling by the Supremes.

    Ya’ll come!

Acme is no longer taking WIC?!!! Where’s the outrage?

  16. aqc says:

I just checked Joanne. A couple Acmes are not allowed to take WIC anymore because they violated the rules. The Acme in Prices Corner is still taking it.

  17. Joanne Christian says:

Do you know if they are just sanctioned for a certain amount of time, or is it infinite? Thanks aqc.
