Chris Coons is In
From the inbox:
I am pleased to announce to you, my friends and long-time supporters, my candidacy for Delaware’s open seat in the United States Senate. In the coming weeks, I will formally kick off my campaign with formal announcements in each county.
People in Delaware are hurting, and they deserve a Senator who will wake up every day and fight for the people in our great state. That’s what my campaign will be about. With your support and help, I can take my record of success here in Delaware and my vision for our future to the U.S. Senate.
Together, we can reach out across Delaware to share a positive message about creating jobs, restoring our communities, and keeping families safe. I can’t do this without you. Your financial support and volunteer time is critical in making this campaign a success. Please visit my new campaign web site at www.chriscoons.com to make a contribution, sign up for email alerts, and volunteer on the campaign.
My family and I appreciate and are inspired by the calls and emails of support we received as we came to this important decision. We look forward to working together in the weeks to come.
Welcome to the race, Chris. Nancy… sorry about your head exploding.

I think Coons can win, but I’m not sure he is willing to do what he has to do to win, which is run as a Democrat. His formal announcement will be telling.
Comment by FranLiberal on 3 February 2010 at 12:05 pm:
At least this announcement vindicates me from the accusation of my “false rumor” given to Delaware Liberal last year. I work at the County and I know what I heard the day Paul Clark spent many hours in our building being briefed on projects and getting to know the department heads. My only error was which office Coons was aspring to win. I misinterpreted something said to indicate he was going to work for Obama. Other than that, my information was accurate. Everyone was satisfied by Coons poo-poo’ing the rumor and claiming his total dedication to finishing his term as County Executive. This campaign wiill certainly interfere with his duties. I can’t wait to see how many County employees work on his campaign during office hours.

So howcome I didn’t get a similar announcement here?

Looking forward to supporting him – he is smart and will hopefully hit Castle where it hurts and speak to the needs of Delawareans…I agree his announcement needs to be a strongly worded affair!
Comment by liberalgeek on 3 February 2010 at 12:08 pm:
Well, it was a false rumor. The original rumor was that he would be appointed to a position in the Obama administration, not seeking an elective office.
Further, if he knew 6 months ago that Biden wasn’t going to run, I wish he would have told someone else… I call bullshit.
Comment by anon on 3 February 2010 at 12:13 pm:
I agree Lib–be prepared to hear more of this. By law, he doesn’t have to resign either, and has a CAO, so the rumor mill about who is running things doesn’t need to be started. A little premature to annoint Clark I would think….
Comment by El Somnambulo on 3 February 2010 at 12:24 pm:
D’s owe Coons a debt of gratitude for stepping up so quickly. Not only do we now have a credible challenger, but a credible challenger who can win.
If any Rethugs deign to claim that Coons is somehow shirking his duty, ask them how many of ‘em said the same thing when Mike Castle was running for US Representative while still governor.

“We owe him a debt of gratitude for stepping up so quickly.”
I think I may frame that. Thanks.

Such a shame. He would have made a terrific Congressman.
Comment by John Manifold on 3 February 2010 at 2:42 pm:
When was the last election in which both candidates for a statewide office were graduates of the same high school?
Comment by Joanne Christian on 3 February 2010 at 2:53 pm:
Do we get points for naming the high school?
Comment by Brooke on 3 February 2010 at 3:02 pm:
Um, John, pointing out again, “both candidates’ is inaccurate, and I didn’t attend their high school.
Comment by hey anonny nonny on 3 February 2010 at 3:42 pm:
Neither did Christine.

This is great news. Now we have to get behind Chris, raise some money, and make sure we don’t keep sending the same old Washington crowd like Castle.
Why does he LIE on his campaign website?
http://204.12.1.154/?page_id=93
Economic Stimulus: Mike Castle has supported the federal initiative to return millions of taxpayer dollars back to individuals and families, spur business investment, and expand refinance options for homeowners.
He voted against the stimulus bill. As you can see on his other website.
http://www.castle.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=109946
Also, while touting himself as a budget hawk, Mike Castle oversaw and voted for President Bush’s budgets that nearly bankrupted our country and destroyed the surplus. Chris Coons actually had to make tough decisions and keep a budget balanced. You tell me who the fiscal conservative is…

Coons is a retard.
Ron E.

Does Coons support the Public Option? How bout “nuclear power plants”? What are his solutions to jobs, jobs jobs? Its foreign policy Coons better bone upon.
Comment by U TUBE Possibility on 3 February 2010 at 8:10 pm:
Calling video buffs: Now that Mutt and Jeff are boogie-ing down campaign trail 2010 (did you get a visual on that?) it’s time for some good footage for Utube. One could employ Cecil B. DeMille concepts….Dems troops tap dancing on the left wing of an airplane w/Reps on the right wing. I’ll leave the details to you DLers w/an artistic bent.
Castle: Tower Hill (where he is quoted in his senior year book as (sic) ‘not liking girls).
Coons: could be TH too that’s were the gold digging nuevo riche send their sons and daughters to rub elbows with the true elite.
As for me I believe, at this point, I will sit this one out (unless vonder boy says something to spark me). Maybe the Daniello Dupes will, like past good Dems, vote early and vote often.
Neither of these jokers represent the people of Delaware and both of them have enough $$$$ to buy quite a lot of votes. To the winner goes the spoils.
Comment by Jason330 on 3 February 2010 at 9:52 pm:
Yeah Ron E. Because you know Yale Law school and Yale Divinity School just can’t get enough of passing out degrees to retards.
Comment by hey anonny nonny on 3 February 2010 at 9:54 pm:
JM,
I don’t know the answer to the graduates question, but the last two to have attended the same high school were probably Minner and Burris in 2000, both hailing from Milford. Minner, of course, dropped out to help her family, later earning her GED.
Comment by John Manifold on 3 February 2010 at 10:39 pm:
Thanks, anonny. I think your answer is the best possible. You’re also on target about what Coons needs to score downstate. He has to work harder than anyone has done in recent times. He should also be bold on some issues where active Democrats feel stymied.
Labor, for example, is apoplectic that Brown’s early seating tomorrow will sidetrack the confirmation of Craig Becker to the NLRB. Labor’s looking for a friend. Card check, public option, similar positions will mean much. Coons already clearly pro-choice, no shilly-shally like Castle.
Comment by M. McKain on 4 February 2010 at 9:25 am:
Brooke, I think what you’re doing is a cool thing – best of luck to you. I like Chris, but I also like the notion of an irritated citizen taking a stand. Yay democracy.
