I Have No Idea What They Are Trying To Prove

Filed in National by on February 2, 2010

Last year, professional idiot and accused felon James O’Keefe went around with a camera trying to get a wedding license in Massachusetts to marry another man.

Ben Wetmore, the 28-year-old conservative activist whom James O’Keefe called a “mentor,” has stayed out of the headlines since it was revealed that he housed O’Keefe and the other participants in the bungled sting of Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-La.) office. When I reached Wetmore by phone yesterday, he politely declined to talk about the situation until it settled down.

Still, the Wetmore-O’Keefe friendship was, in gonzo journalism terms, a productive one. In 2008, after O’Keefe had left the Leadership Institute, the two men recorded hidden camera video of themselves going to three state offices in Massachusetts, applying for marriage licenses, openly admitting that they were straight men who wanted to get married to take advantage of the benefits.

O’KEEFE: We probably plan on doing this for about a year and then..
CLERK: And then, divorcing.
O’KEEFE: Right.
CLERK: Yeah.

I really have no idea what they are trying to prove here. If a couple of the opposite sex says they are getting married for the benefits, that is not a reason to turn down a license is it? I’ve known plenty of people who were married for less than a year. Why should same sex couples be treated differently?

And in the meantime, this accused felon went on Hannity yesterday to work on his version of the Marion Barry excuse — The bitch set me up!

Altho in the accused felon’s case, the new bitch is the Department of Justice.

  2. just kiddin' says:

The new bitch is the CIA~~ thats where Stan Dai came from. Trained intell! Question is why the lawyer recused himself?

  3. cassandra m says:

Stan Dai ran a recruiting program for the CIA — trying to get more women and minorities in the agency. Apparently Mr. Dai engaged is quite abit of resume inflation, claiming to run a counterterrorism program. Sort of SOP for movement conservatives, I think.

  4. It’s funny Cass, because now O’Keefe and company are claiming just to be young dumb guys.

    Danger Will Robinson, Danger!

    O’Keefe-GATE is losing altitude!!!!

  8. We know, Elephant, that you’re embarrassed you have to defend an alleged felon. We get it, we really do.

  9. cassandra m says:

Not just an alleged felon, but his lying cohort too!

Please Congress — pass a law saying these lying SOBs can never get any Federal money or Federal jobs. Please.

Haha my Aunts in Mass said one of the major reasons they got married was for the insurance benefits. They also just happen to, you know, love each other. They should have gone with O’key dokey up there.

Aw, c’mon! These are just a bunch of kids! This is just a harmless prank! You know what they say, don’cha? Boys will be boys!

No doubt about it. It’ll be amusing to watch the right wing media trying to spin this latest debacle. Yesterday O’Keefe was the newest Fascist poster boy. Today he is a man looking at a nice stint in federal prison. The Republicans are once again experiencing the kind of OOPS moment for which they have become famous for in recent years. It really is quite touching when you think about it.

What I love more than anything is the “harmless school boy prank” angle that the right wing is trying to spin! I did a little bit of research, folks. Little Jimmy O’Keefe is almost two years older than Lee Harvey Oswald was when he assassinated President Kennedy. So much for that argument – you would think.

Is this merely the tip of a nasty iceberg? Will O’Keefe “cooperate” with federal investigators in order to reduce his sentence? Are there bigger fish that are due some serious frying?

    To be continued….
