Frank Rich On The Tea Party Movement

Filed in National by on February 28, 2010 6 Comments

New York Times op-ed writer Frank Rich takes a look at the Tea Party movement and the GOP embrace of it: No one knows what history will make of the present — least of all journalists, who can at best write history’s sloppy first draft. But if I were to place an incautious bet on […]

Weekend Open Thread

Well I have to say that last snowstorm was a bit of a dud, but I’m not complaining. It’s nice not to be stuck inside for a couple of days. I have to add, I’m really, really ready for spring to arrive. This story just makes me sad: Last week, the South Dakota House of […]

DE GOP Abuse of Legislative Perks

Filed in National by on February 27, 2010 59 Comments

That is the topic of a good piece of reporting by Ginger Gibson in this morning’s News Journal, providing some detail how how the GOP spent their budgets to support themselves when they were in control of the House. This report has the feel of a tip of the iceberg — as in there is likely more there to look at.

About that Slavery Apology…..

Filed in National by on February 26, 2010 35 Comments

When I wrote the other day that I thought it might be a distraction for the General Assembly to pass a resolution apologizing for Delaware’s role in the horrid disgusting dehumanizing bigoted evil institution of slavery, I did say the undeniable racism of certain leading conservative and Republican Party officials and of certain elements of […]

New Senate Poll Gives Castle A 18 Point Lead (Updated)

Filed in National by on February 26, 2010 16 Comments

Coons has obviously increased his name recognition, but still lags behind. This race will be an uphill battle for Coons and I think he can win, but he needs to start generating some excitement. I think that excitement starts with the grassroots Democrats.

Paterson Ends Gubernatorial Campaign

Filed in National by on February 26, 2010 5 Comments

The New York Times bombshell on Paterson’s possible intervention to cover up domestic violence by an aide has convinced Paterson to end his campaign: Less than 48 hours after the New York Times revealed in a bombshell story that the administration of Gov. David Paterson had intervened in the domestic violence case of a top […]

3 Pit-Bull Attacks In 3 Days

Filed in National by on February 26, 2010 16 Comments

I found this amazing and horrifying. THE BLOODY paw prints were still in the snow, and a bunch of white gauze lay nearby. The pinkish snow was packed down where two pit bulls had attacked a 10-year-old boy – severely injuring his right arm and puncturing his neck, left arm and back with their teeth […]

Things I Learned From Ron Williams

Filed in National by on February 26, 2010 20 Comments

This week’s Ron Williams column in the News Journal was more informative than usual. I learned the following:

  • Anthony Wedo is rich.
  • Anthony Wedo is not running for the DE-AL U.S. House seat, did I mention that Wedo is rich?
  • Richard Korn has black hair, is from New York and has a New York accent.

Dear Dr. Liberal,

Should I buy a used car from Barack Obama? It is a 2005 Mazda Protege with 65,000 miles on it. He is asking $3,000 for it. What do you think?

As of writing this, I’m still waiting for this latest snowstorm, the “snowicane” to start. It sure was nice of the snowstorm to hold off until everyone gets to work to start! Rasmussen Polls Delaware

Filed in National by on February 25, 2010 10 Comments

Take it with a boulder of salt, but according to the poll, President Obama has a 51% approval rating, versus a 48% disapproval rating; Governor Markell has a 61% approval rating, versus a 37% disapproval rating; and Castle leads Coons 53% to 32%. 8% prefer some other candidate (O’Donnell?? Anti-Coons or Pro-Biden sentiment?) and 8% are unsure.

Fiscal Conservatives Don’t Want To Cut Spending

Fiscal Conservatives Don’t Want To Cut Spending

Conservatives do a lot of posturing about the deficit, which they only discovered the existence of on January 20, 2009. I remember the good ol’ days of the early Bush presidency when the problem was the surplus. Well, conservatives are apparently extremely upset with the deficit now, but taxes are still bad (in fact we […]

NPR Destroys Republican Talking Point

Filed in National by on February 25, 2010 11 Comments

The media coverage of the health care reform debate has been quite frustrating because the coverage has not covered the substance of the debate. It’s been the typical “on one hand, on the other hand” type of coverage which has allowed Republicans to get away with telling outrageous lies about health care reform (death panels!!!!). […]

Cheney Lied About CIA Torture Effectiveness

Filed in National by on February 24, 2010 1 Comment

In Cheney’s mind, he’s a courageous patriot who’s not afraid to get things done. Cheney thinks that terrorists will be scared of the U.S. if only we’d torture more and the only way to get info is to throw accused terrorists (some of whom may be actually innocent) into Guantanamo (which has special terrorist repellant […]

The Slavery Apology

Filed in National by on February 24, 2010 63 Comments

What happened before does have an affect on what is now. We fought a civil war to end slavery and hundreds of thousands died in that effort. The civil rights movement 100 years later ended overt state discrimination. And 60 years later we have elected ourselves our first black President. That is progress. And I tend to think righting the wrong is an inherent apology in and of itself. Further, I am a progressive, so I tend to look forward in working to make the country better, rather than backward to what we were before.
