What’s Going On With Republicans?

Filed in National by on January 29, 2010

On Wednesday Obama gave a great State of the Union speech. It had been a rough couple of weeks for Democrats, most of it from the Democrats own making. Obama defied the pundits by giving a speech that wasn’t full of apologies, but instead stated that his policies are still right and dared everyone to follow him. What, exactly, happened with Republicans, though? McDonnell gave a rather empty, but not embarrassing, speech yet the Republicans seemed frantic and crazy yesterday – did anyone else notice?

In the State of the Union speech, Obama put Republicans on the spot. They sat on their hands for bank regulations and bank fees. They also sat on their hands for tax cuts. Then a whole bunch of them went into public and whined that Obama is so mean to them. 🙄

So, this all seems like standard politics so far. What else happened? Two Republicans had crazy meltdowns on camera. First it was Judd Gregg who went nuts when asked what programs he would cut (isn’t that fair since they say stopping spending is the way forward):

Andrew Breitbart, a conservative media mogul, went nuts on David Shuster regarding the James O’Keefe teabugger story. Breitbart employed O’Keefe (warning: this video is a shoutfest and painful to watch):

Republicans also voted against a bipartisan debt commission, against PAYGO rules which they championed and word is that the GOP purity test is going to fail. President Obama’s SOTU speech was good but was it that good? What is going on? Is the pressure of actually maybe having to try to do some governing getting to them?

If Republicans make big gains in November, it won’t be because their policies are popular. It will be because right now the Republicans best friends are dithering and spineless Democrats.

    I’ll say it again:

Republicans are outnumbered but are massed in a phalanx formation. A jeering, slobbering phalanx.

There are known ways to defeat a phalanx. But Obama is trying none of them.

Instead, Obama is confronting the phalanx by turning the other cheek and inviting them to surrender. It is not working. While the principle is admirable in theory, both sides are correctly interpreting it as a sign of weakness. Meanwhile his own troops are milling around leaderless and calculating their chances of survival.

Obama is too focused on trying to govern through the Senate. He needs to grow an executive pair ASAP.

    Amen.

By the way, good luck with that slander suit, Mr. Bitebart. O’Keefe is a public figure now.

ya know. we have always said Obama seems to play the long game. He’s a chess player.. surrendering Rooks, Bishops maybe even the Queen (harry reid?) The SOTU seemed indeed like he had grown a pair and was effectively saying “last chance, republicans”
I agree that the democrats are FAR too stupid for this approach.. but when he decide to rain down fire on the Party of No, dems will fall in line. They rebuilt their feeble moronic party for a good 6 months. They did it through false “gotcha journalism”, outright lies, and fear mongering. but now, they are responsible to either move legislation, or actually hold it up with a filibuster. their own little jr journalist is a felon and a spy. Saint Sarah is fading into the background while everyone has already forgotten about President-elect Brown. The last bastion of their pathetic attempt to steer the country back to 1902 is Fixed News. unfortunately most of the American sheeple eat that garbage up, but it wont last long. GDP is up 5.4% the economy is recovering and when KSM is convicted using the laws our founder prescribed, instead of the mob-rule Spanish Inquisition mentality the R’s would like… this insurgency of the self described American Taliban will come to and end.

then we can go about improving the country.

Yea, it had nothing to do with the dems total disregard for the American people and the deficit/debt. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that the Messiah hasn’t kept any of his key promises. I’m certain people didn’t mind that the far left dems were trying to impose their will on all of us via backroom deals and bribes instead of listening to the American people. You’re right; it was the “gotcha journalism”. The people of Mass., all of whom I am sure watch Fox News, were too stupid to see that the Republicans were simply fear mongering. You are unreal!

I actually feel dumber having read your comment!

Desmond, buddy, turn down Rush (and I don’t mean a well-worn copy of 2112) in the background so you can think. As for the “disregard for the American people”, the things the Dems are doing (HCR, stimulus, finance reform, etc.) are always popular in polls — even more so when the specifics are explained so that people understand the truth, not the blatant lies sold to them by FOX and the GOP. Dems are respecting and acting on the will of the people.

As for debt/deficit, let’s see. Democratic president — debt is not only reduced, but turned into a surplus. Republican president — surplus disappears into corporate bank accounts and historic amount of debt is piled up. Democratic president again — largest social legislation in generations and it will REDUCE the deficit. You do the math.

As for the backroom deals — I wish that was true. If it were, congressional Dems wouldn’t have wasted the entire summer being strung along by disingenuous Republicans like they were a Mormon girl on prom night. If the “far left dems” really could impose their will, the country would be in much better shape. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have the will to do it.

I hope you feel a little smarter now.

  6. a.price says:

IMPOSE THEIR WILL?!?! you mean the the will of the people as put forth on ELECTION DAY???? desmond, i know it is the republican party line to deny that Obama actually WON the presidency…. that he somehow stole it and you are actually in the majority, but you cant change the reality of the world. the conservative movement is a (very very very loud) minority. whatever her name is, was an awful candidate and ran a poor election. president-elect Brown, to his credit exploited that weakness. Kudos to the people of Massachusetts for not letting that “it’s my turn” mentality to win (if only delaware could do the same thing to castle)

and you are clearly too drunk on deep red kool-aid to catch the reference to Saint Sarah with my “gotcha journalism” comment… what your little pimp ACTUALLY is, is a fraud and a spy.
as to fear mongering… what do you call Hannity’s nightly tirade of insane lies? oh wait.. he is speaking the truth…. do you realize the EXACT things he is saying about Obama he called “treason” under Dubya the Dumbass?

but of course you dont care. Have another glass of kool-aid. leave the important things to the adults.

Ouch. That Breibart video was hard to watch. He has obviously been watching too much Fox if he thinks that the way to participate in a conversation/interview is to repeatthe same thing over and over again, louder each time…

  8. a.price says:

he CANT be the president, he CANT be the president, HE CANT BE THE PRESIDENT!

  9. pandora says:

These two videos, along with the Republican response to Alito’s comment during the SOTU, are quite revealing. Seems they’re playing defense now.

  10. a.price says:

because they know their recent uptick in polls and popularity was much like the short lived lead McCain had after the R-tard convention. Then Saint Sarah started talking and they blew it because they cant help but be horrible people that repulse folks with half a brain.

  11. Scott P says:

Yes, and it should only get worse for them. Up until now, they’ve been able to play all their little games without having to be held responsible for their actions or explain themselves. All they had to say was, “Hey, they have 60 votes, they should be able to do whatever they want”. And when the GOP did try to defend their actions (or inaction), it was usually with lies and/or directly contradictory statements. Now they should be, and Dems need to make sure they are, held responsible for what their refusal to participate in the government they were elected to is doing to the country. We elect our Congress to run the country and solve our problems, not play a perpetual game of “Let’s Get Me Re-Elected”. I think the GOP is starting to feel this pressure. They’re either going to have start acting like grown-up legislators again, or we’re in for a world of hurt.

  12. It’s interesting that the GOP seems in panic yesterday before the Obama smackdown today. They must be in full panic mode right now.
