Tuesday Open Thread

It’s Tuesday and it’s open thread time. Let’s go!

It’s election day in Massachusetts and they’re set to send teabagging, birther and nude model Scott Brown to the U.S. Senate. Congrats, Massachusetts, that’ll really show those Democrats who’s boss! Nate Silver rates Brown as a 3:1 favorite based on poll results.

Be sure to listen to Joanne Christian discuss her experience treating Haitian earthquake victims in the Dominican Republic today on WDEL at 4:35 PM. You go Joanne!

Elections matter. Deaver joins George Cole and – holy cow – Mike Vincent to reject the Townsend-Lingo disaster in Lewes.

    http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20100119/NEWS/100119013/Sussex+County+Council+rejects+Lewes+development+project

A rare victory over the developers.

  2. Brooke says:

Well, I live in hope. If the voters reject Coakley it’s not about Obama or HCR. It’s strictly sexism.

  3. Lizard says:

will there be enough Brown voters to overcome democrat vote fraud?

it’s going to be a squeeker

  4. Delaware Dem says:

Very good, oh cold blooded one. You read your talking points early this morning.

  5. a.price says:

so the 2 headlines Fixed news has
“Brown Defeats Obama, health care, and Liberal Nazis”
    and
“ACORN Steals Election… revolution to begin tomorrow!”

  6. Delaware Dem says:

    Precisely, A. Price.

  7. anon says:

If Brown wins by one vote: “It’s a rebuff to Obama, and the beginning of a new conservative revolution!”

If Coakley wins by one vote: “ACORN thugs!! ACORN thugs!”

  8. h. says:

Just the fact that the race for “Teddy’s seat” is this close is a setback for the democrats.

  9. I’m seeing anectdotal reports of huge turnout in MA today.

  10. Jason Z says:

UI, please explain your birther smear.

  11. Scott Brown, birther:

Check out this video, courtesy of Blue Mass Group, in which, after praising Sarah Palin, Massachusetts Senate hopeful Scott Brown appears to suggest he thinks Barack Obama was born out of wedlock — a false claim which has been advanced frequently by members of the ‘birther’ movement.

Brown: Barack’s mom had him when she was, what, 18 years old?
    Guest: And married!

Brown: Well, I don’t know about that.

Now the factual record on this is clear. Obama’s parents were married February, 1961, and Obama was born in early August of the same year. So his mother was certainly married when he was born.

Complicating matters for Brown is the fact that, around the time the video was taped, the fringier elements of the conservative movement were advancing this theory–that Obama’s mother wasn’t married when he was born–as a related matter to the more important “Obama was born in Kenya” theory.

  12. a.price says:

and the point goes to UI.
    h. it’s getting old. EVERYTHING is seen as a victory for the rethugs. “oh sure we lost some seats, but they were NOT PURE republicans” “yes, DEDE DID lose a long time republican seat to a democrat, but that is because we didnt WANT her to win.” “look at how many votes sarah palin got! that means the ENTIRE COUNTRY wants to impeach obama”
    get a new line.

  13. Diebold machines’ makers are famous for promising to win elections for Republicans, IIRC, not DEMs.

Scott Brown is also on his third wife, from what I heard on Al Mascitti’s show today. Nice.

  14. Lizard says:

    UI,

According to Michelle Obama, Barack’s mother was “very young and very single” when the dear leader was born.

  15. a.price says:

    site your source, liar.

  16. a.,

Conservative sites have been pushing some interview where Michelle Obama was raised by a single mother, which he was. She and his father divorced when he was 2. That makes her single. She never said his mother was single when he was born. I agree with a., you need to cite the original interview and not World Nut Daily.

  17. Lizard says:

    MSNBC 10 July 2008

The Kansas City roundtable, held at the city’s University of Missouri campus, was the aspiring First Lady’s second in as many days. Yesterday, she held a similar event in Pontiac, Michigan, before a crowded auditorium of mostly black women where they discussed soaring health care costs and unemployment.

Today’s audience was also made up of almost all women, but the crowd in the more affluent university area was more mixed. Participants mentioned college-loan payments and day-care fees as monthly costs that drive them to scrimp and cut corners.

Obama used the roundtable audience, as she did yesterday, to describe her husband’s understanding of women’s issues through the prism of the strong — but sometimes struggling — women in his life.

His own mother, she said at the beginning of her remarks, was “very young and very single when she had him.” And, Obama added, he has observed his wife’s attempts to reconcile motherhood with her career aspirations.

“He sees me, his wife, who struggles every day with that guilt that we all hold deep in our hearts as women,” she said. “That guilt that you don’t have the choice to stay home, and even if you do, you feel guilty.”

“He has seen me struggle with this my entire life,” she added. “Trust me, Barack understands the struggles of women.”

  18. Jason Z says:

    A.price:
    From MSNBC 10 July 2008:
‘His own mother, she said at the beginning of her remarks, was “very young and very single when she had him.” And, Obama added, he has observed his wife’s attempts to reconcile motherhood with her career aspirations.’
    http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/10/1193601.aspx

Sure the writing is very awkward, but the quoted material seems to be carefully chosen.

It doesn’t matter either way, suggesting that Obama’s young, promiscuous mother wasn’t married when she had him wasn’t the point of Brown’s statement. He was praising Obama’s mother for choosing life. Even if that life was attributable to a rotten bastard-making-machine.

  19. Lizard says:

here’s the whole speach from a Missouri Progressive Blog”

    google is fun

  20. Obama’s mother and father were married when he was born – that’s a fact.
    Obama was born in Hawai’i – that’s a fact

Obama’s mother was promiscous? That’s a smear on someone who is no longer living and can’t defend themselves, classy.

I doubt Obama’s mother cared what nude model and thrice-married Scott Brown thinks about her choices.

  21. pandora says:

Clean up your act, Jason Z. That’s your final warning.

  22. rhubard says:

    “a rotten bastard-making-machine.”

At last, a conservative calls his party what it really is.

  23. a.price says:

and the right wing hate party again shows its true colors.

  24. Jason Z says:

Well, I don’t need to dig real deep here because Barack Sr.’s rep. is pretty well-known. According to wikipedia (I know I know), he made and abandoned around 8 babies with four different women and seemingly married and divorced the women without too much trouble. He left Barry’s mom when he was a tiny baby, if that doesn’t make him rotten I don’t know what does. If George Obama is his son, then he was born out of wedlock, hence a bastard. I should have had a comma in there though, maybe that’s the confusion. Apologies…Barack Obama Sr. was a rotten, bastard-making machine.

Promiscuous: Well, in the good old days, getting pregnant out of wedlock would have been enough to earn that title. Barack Sr. was still reportedly married to his first wife and it doesn’t appear that he and Ann Dunham were engaged. Looking at this guy’s track record, I think you could say that Ann wasn’t being very selective or discriminate.

My last and weakest point, only meant to enflame: she was an educated, liberal woman in the early sixties; a stereotypically loose demographic.

  25. Lizard says:

Obama’s mother and father were married when he was born – that’s a fact.
    Source?

    Michelle Obama says not.
Time.com in a neutral to positive profile piece on Stanley Ann says no documentation of the marriage has been found but she did file for divorce from BHO Sr.
The Time profile describes a very interesting life. worth reading although it won’t provide much mud for these fights.

  26. I’m sorry birthers, I don’t have time for you today. It’s up to you to prove they weren’t married. Start digging! It’s not up to Obama to find documentation from his non-living parents.

It’s funny how you say educated, liberal women are “stereotypically loose” since it’s conservative, family values Republicans that are often found hiking the Appalachian Trail.

  27. kaveman says:

“Scott Brown” and “cake walk” are now being used in the same sentence.

  28. Jason Z says:

    UI,
We all fall, Liberals just have a shorter trip.

I didn’t say O’s rents weren’t married or that he’s not a citizen. I believe he is a citizen and I don’t know if his ‘rents were married, same as Scott Brown.

    kaveman,
2010 might be the Year of the Cake Walk for us evil conservatives.

  29. kaveman says:

    Coakley campaign calling reporter “nazi.”

Ya, there going to pull this off.

    hahahahahahahahahaah

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2010/01/19/coakleys_office_throws_out_reporter.html

  30. You must be upset, k. Inappropriate Nazi references are for conservatives, especially when they talk about health care reform.

I don’t know if anyone’s parents were married or not, and don’t care either. I do tend to believe people when they say they are. I’m now going to start asking people to show me their birth certificates and marriage certificates, since this is the GOP way.

  31. V says:

Funny how teenage pregnancy and std rates tend to go up in “red” areas of the country. When I was in health class in high school I remember being told of the horrors of our own conservative sussex county which was at the time the number one place in the country for cases of syphillis (or was it another std? I can’t remember) per square mile.

As a young, educated liberal woman who’s been dating the same guy for 7 years I’m a little offended. Of course that’s what you wanted. But you can still eat a bag of dicks.

  32. A. price says:

what the conservunists cant stand is that a white woman “bred” with a black man. they go out of their MINDS every time they encounter a race traitor
know who else was involved in a single mother raising a biracial child? that (thankfully dead) evil jerkwad Strom Thurmond. eat that conservs

  33. Jason Z says:

He better propose before someone snatches up that Shakespearean wit of yours.

  34. Jason Z says:

Ha! Thurmond was a Democrat when he fathered Essie Mae Washington-Williams. He continued to support her financially into adulthood:

“She waited until after his passing because she had such a profound love and respect for her father and so did he for her. … They both shared a mutual respect that raised the bar of integrity, as we generally know it,” Wheaton (William’s lawyer) said Tuesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“She said she waited to go public because she didn’t want to embarrass herself or hurt Thurmond’s career.”

Why does everyone want me to eat? I think I’m at a pretty healthy weight right now.

  35. Lizard says:

put down the chemistry set dear, you have been inhaling too many fumes:

I don’t know if anyone’s parents were married or not, and don’t care either.

  36. A. price says:

He was a DIXIECRAT smart guy. Half the democrats walked out on the 68 convention and FLED to the Republican party when the Dems decided to purge the racists….. the GOP welcomed that scum with open white arms.
And his daughter’s silence is a testament to HER compassion and character. It does NOTHING to absolve him of a lifetime of hypocrisy and racism.

  37. V says:

He did, Jason. Last June. I only save wit for people I enjoy.

  38. A. price says:

you guys know who else wasnt married to her baby daddy? MARY!

  39. Jason Z says:

Well, I sure am glad we got Bobbie “N-Word” Byrd, oh wait, Harry Reid still embraces him in his light-skinned arms. So when do we welcome that racist to the Dark Side?

  40. A. price says:

bryd has expressed regret and shame in his life-time ago association with the KKK…. kind of the like the Pope belonging to the Hitler youth…. not a baseless nazi slur…an actual fact. Strom NEVER expressed remorse for his hateful past. you lose again

  41. Joanne Christian says:

Thank you Del Lib for the “favorite holiday” poll. Assignment done, but now the kid’s biggest question is “How come nobody said Presidents’ Day”?

Anybody remember when we had both Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday as “days”? I can remember as a kid too, getting these hard candies shaped as 2 cherries w/ a green straw stem in between, that were sold at the time. Rebecca? Kilroy? Woolworth’s?!!!!

  42. ray k says:

Perhaps the fact that the corporate controlled press has actually been able to shift the blame for our current economic woes totally to the democratic side of the aisle, and the dumbed down american public belives it, has every thing to do with losing Ted Kennedy,s seat to a republican. Expect more of the same as time goes on, the democrats seem unable or unwilling to fight back against this propoganda.

  43. h. says:

You know the democrats are in trouble when their greatest weapon, the media, abandons them.

Remember…. there are many more of us “dumbed down americans” than you intellectuals.

  44. just kiddin' says:

Joanne did a great job in revealing what is really going on. The lack of basic supplies in the Domincan Republic? What happened to all those ships full of supplies, truckloads that were being diverted to the Republic to be trucked into Haiti? Did the trucks just bypass the hospitals in the Domincan Republic who are caring for many Haitians? The Domincans were in Haiti first before any country. We need to start collecting the sheets, blankets, bandages, first aid, Joanne spoke about. Its not about the almighty dollar and waiting for “someone” to go buy the stuff. Its all delay, delay, delay.

  45. ray k says:

Responce to h; sadly you are correct, but a lack of wisdom is always catastrophic to a democracy, and nothing to be proud of.

  46. Delaware Dem says:

    justkiddin…

If I would have to speculate, I would imagine that all the supplies were being trucked to Haiti. Joanne was at a Dominican hospital, not a Haitian one.

  47. rhubard says:

    “Michelle Obama says not.”

Didn’t realize she was there. Or is her testimony just hearsay?
