Breaking: Joe Biden’s Mother Has Died

Filed in Delaware, National by on January 8, 2010

I just received a call from LiberalGeek who has informed me (via twitter) that Joe Biden’s mother, Jean Biden, has died. She was 92, so at least we can say she lived a long and eventful life, and saw her son become Vice President of the United States.

Our thoughts are with the Biden family.

Update from Delaware Dem:

The News Journal now has the story. I want to post a quick story from that article that I think perfectly describes Jean Biden:

The young Joe Biden had a stutter that garnered plenty of laughter and teasing nicknames from his peers. He walked out of his seventh grade Catholic school classroom, ashamed after a nun teased him in front of his peers for being unable to clearly read a paragraph. Jean Biden met him at the door of the family home and drove him back to school, where she confronted the teacher.

“I could see my mother pull herself up to her full height, 5 foot 1.” Joe wrote in his 2007 autobiography, “Promises to Keep.” “My mother, who was so timid, so respectful of the church, stood up, walked over in front of the nun and said, ‘If you ever speak to my son like that again, I’ll come back and rip that bonnet off your head.”

Her point made, Jean Biden then ordered her son to get back to class.

Now go give God a good talking to, Mrs. Biden.

A beautiful story was told on one of the websites about the memorial mass floral arrangements that shows how Joe and Jill are beloved as “family oriented” much like the Kennedy family was. Apparently a Delaware Biden friend, Roberta Daniels, andher son Nathan, a very Catholic family picked up all of the floral arrangements after the memorial mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary that couldn’t be taken to the gravesite and would have otherwise been discarded and placed them flowers in all of the places Joe found nostalgic. (Archmere Academy…Joe’s Oz with the yellow brick road), Holy Rosary in honor of the nun who embarrassed Joe about his lisp in grade school and his mother giving the nun a piece of her mind, the apartment complex where he first lived when he moved to Delaware, the Farmers Market where his dad sold baseball pennants for a time, the Wilmington train station where he commuted by Amtrak t Washington…and several other nostalgic locations). This was all in keeping with God saying to love your neighbor. The story makes it seem like Delaware is a good place to have loyal friends, raise a family, and attend private schools like this infamous Archmere. This Daniels woman’s son, Alex apparnetly attend Archmere also. Joe Biden, like the Kennedy’s seems to have the best of friends in Delware. His friends are always wanting to look out for him. That’s how you can tell a person’s character…in the friends they keep. Biden is obviously a family man.
