Wednesday Open Thread

Filed in National by on November 25, 2009

Well, it’s the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and some of us are still at work. It’s open thread time – what are you doing for Thanksgiving? Are you traveling?

Doug Hoffman (NY-23) was foiled by ACORN once again. He re-conceded the House race (or is that un-un-conceded?):

The Conservative Party candidate conceded a race in upstate New York for a U.S. House of Representatives seat for the second time Tuesday, saying he doesn’t have enough votes.

How does it feel to lose twice?

I’ll bet you’re also surprised to learn that Republicans are hypocrites. No, really…

[Carly] Fiorina’s in good company. Sarah Palin endorsed the bailout; now she doesn’t like it anymore. Mitt Romney endorsed the bailout; now he’s railing against it. Glenn Beck not only endorsed the bailout, he said at the time that it ought to be bigger. Now he’s convinced it’s evil.

I realize that when it comes to right-wing populism, last year’s financial industry bailout holds a unique place in the panoply of conservative complaints. But these far-right characters can only run so far from their records of a year ago.

They have a few choices. They can a) hold their ground and defend the bailout; b) explain why they were mistaken; or c) admit that they’re shamelessly pandering, hoping to score a few cheap points with the Teabagging crowd by telling them what they want to hear.

Darn that ACORN! I got an acorn squash in my vegetable CSA. Coincidence? I think not!

    Did someone say ACORN?

Nevada ACORN Executive Sentenced In Vote Fraud Conspiracy

    Canada Free Press ^ | November 25, 2009 | Matthew Vadum
Christopher Edwards, a former Nevada ACORN executive, received a sentence of three years probation and a $500 fine today for his role in an illegal voter registration conspiracy, the Las Vegas Sun reports. In August the former ACORN field director pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime of compensation for registration of voters. The newspaper reported The attorney general’s office said Edwards organized and operated a quota system called “blackjack” or “21+” through which the group paid canvassers based on the number of voter registration cards they collected each day. The canvassers were to gather at…

From the TPM article “Bad Picks Have Consequences”

    Here’s the Money quote:

“The ones that stand out are Beau Biden in Delaware, yet to be determined in Illinois, Kirsten Gillibrand in New York, and Michael Bennet in Colorado.”

    anonone,

What is Josh Marshall smoking? He thinks that Beau Biden was appointed to his dad’s Senate seat. WTH?

  11. Here’s a fuller quote from the article JMM knows very well that Beau Biden wasn’t appointed to his father’s seat:

As you can see, each of races is fall out from the successful 2008 election. Biden resigned his seat and got a placeholder appointment to cue it up for his son Beau Biden in 2010. Obama gave up his seat in Illinois triggering the Blago/Burris train wreck, Clinton resigned her seat to go to the State Department and Bennet got appointed after Sen. Salazar went to Interior.

Defending a seat without an incumbent is always challenging to some degree. But each of these, in different ways, looks very much like unforced errors/self-inflicted wounds for the Dems 2010 election prospects.

The “best” of these appointments may well be Beau Biden. There’s the obvious nepotism angle. But Biden’s an established politician — he’s the state’s Attorney General. And Delaware’s a small state whose politics has been dominated by three of four guys for decades. It’s not clear to me that there was another Dem available who would have come in to the contest better positioned. And his probable opponent, Mike Castle, is one of those three or four guys who’s been running the state for forever.

  12. I just wrote a note to TPM to have them clarify their article. I also sent comments about the possibility of a John Carney appointment to the seat.

He might as well have been. Look, i like Beau, he has shown he is his own man, but lets be serious here. Joe was a senator for a LOOOOONNNG time. if memory serves, he never even reallyhad a tough time defending his seat. When the son of a long time senator runs for his dad’s recently vacated senate seat….a dad that is now the VPOTUS, it is nepalicious. I think delaware would benefit from having a Biden still in the senate, but we shouldn’t call it anything other than what it is. Truthfully, i would like to see kaufman stay there.. but this is how things work

I’ll make an unnaturally large vegetarian dinner for mostly family. After that, playing it by ear. NOT going shopping, that’s for sure. Is it supposed to stop raining? Ever?

And I originally thought Senator Kaufman was a “placeholder”. Not any more. Actually, reminds me of a Bible verse.

“When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

    John2 9-11

I’d count Kaufman as “good wine” and I’m sorry he wasn’t served earlier.

Pleased to report I got in and out of the Acme in under 30 minutes, no line at Pike Creek. Of course, that was a couple of hours ago and I had fewer than 10 items.

I hope cassandra or pandora have some good recipes to share for turkey soup.

I’m celebrating in Boston – Right off Mass Ave in Cambridge. Can I still write for DL if I convince Mr. Pandora to move here? 😉

  17. Rebecca says:

    Oh pandora!

You are bringing back memories of watching the election returns when Mass was the only state to go for George McGovern. I wasn’t very far from there, over in Somerville. It is indeed the HUB of good liberal thought! If you end up moving there I may turn green with envy. But, wow, it is expensive. You are going to go through some serious sticker shock after living in Delaware.

  18. anontwo says:

Thanks, UI – I missed that line! The other references to Beau clearly suggested that he was the one that got the appointment.

  19. nemski says:

Pandora, you could be our New England Liberal correspondent. Have a great time in Beantown.

I’ve seen this website roundly mocked and laughed at via a number of blogs, but the best one has to be Atrios’ reminder to the repub candidate who put forth this monstrosity that Geocities called and they want their website back.
