Voluntary Victim?

Filed in National by on November 17, 2009

Sarah Palin is claiming that the current cover of Newsweek is sexist.

This is the picture on the cover:

Can you be a voluntary victim of sexism? Sarah Palin posed for this photo willingly. The sexism charge seems to be one of context, where this photo was for Runner’s World magazine and that context of that photo was about health and fitness.

Really?

Then why is the American flag drapped so disrespectfully over a chair like a used towel? (Why does Sarah Palin hate America?) Why does the photo contain the Gold Blue Star Mother flag, indicating that Palin has a child serving overseas? The photo sure seems to have a lot more context in it than just health and fitness, no? There seems to be themes of attempted patriotism (the presence of the American flag would indicate that, but since the flag is treated SO disrespectfully any attempt to convey patriotism fails miserably) and military service.

woah thunder thighs. and look at those buicks she calls hips…. damn. Sarah, next time you run for office you might want to actually do some RUNNING… fatty

  2. Delaware Dem says:

    Now, A.Price, that is sexist.

  3. a.price says:

It sure is DD :). It sure is.

  4. G Rex says:

What, did Annie Liebowitz take this picture? I don’t see a hunting rifle…and what’s with the BlackBerry? And it’s not sexism as long as Newsweek ran the Obama swimsuit picture on the cover. What, didn’t they do that?

(DelDem, it’s a Blue Star flag – Gold Star means your son was killed in action.)

  5. Geezer says:

Wrong GM brand, AP. You meant to say “wide-track Pontiac.”

  6. pandora says:

To me, this picture sums up everything Sarah Palin states about Sarah Palin.

And, no, it isn’t sexism if you willingly posed for a picture. Can she please go away now?

  7. V says:

First off, let me just say that I really really hate Sarah Palin.

However, as loathe as I am to admit it, I think she might have a little bit of a point here. She took a picture for a running magazine in runner’s clothes and now a major news magazine is using it in an article about her political aspirations? Why? They have TONS of other pictures of her to choose from. Why this one?

I mean she’s using it (I wouldn’t have googled the cover this morning if I hadn’t seen a story on Morning Joe about her disapproval) to be a victim for more attention. And I’m sure part of the reason she posed in shorts in the first place was to further her “hot for teacher” mystique that republicans get all bonerific over her for, but still. She wouldn’t be able to cry for the next few days about being objectified if Newsweek hadn’t given her the opportunity to.

  8. a.price says:

If Putin tries to rear his head, she can just use her enormous hips to block his view…. is that Russia in the background?

  9. a.price says:

Maybe that is Newsweek’s game. There was this girl i went ot high school with… biggest drama queen on the planet. example, if you bumped into her by mistake in the hall way, her reaction would be based on how many other people were in the hall. no one else, no reaction, a full hall way, she would drop her books, fall over and cry. She used the same tactic to people talking to her, looking at her etc. It got to the point where, dick head i am, i would try and draw out these reactions cause everyknow knew she was a tool.
    like sarah.
I think it is hilarious every time Sarah is wronged. She goes on tv and plays the victim and reminds us how hard her life is, and gets the teabaggers all lathered up about some leftist socialist nazi gay conspiracy, then goes away for a few weeks.

  10. V says:

a.price: high school girls initials please.

  11. D.C. says:

    Talk about reaching!

  12. Sarah Palin is simultaneously a victim of sexism and a perpetrator. I do think it is sexist to dwell on her looks, her motherhood, etc. That is not what should define her as a politician or a public figure.

However, she does use sexism to her benefit. All the winking and flirtiness. She’s using her looks in a way that is not appropriate.

As far as the picture goes – I don’t see anything wrong with wearing shorts and posing for a running magazine if that’s your hobby. I think there is a good question here – if a male politician had done this would there have been as much attention to it? Would it have been used in a political story?

  13. pandora says:

Um… she has no political story. 👿

  14. cassandra_m says:

There was a very great deal of attention — attention that was almost always pretty much inappropriate — to the Obama in a bathing suit picture.

  15. cassandra_m says:

One of the things about Palin is that she wants everything — she wants to pimp her familiy to make sure she gets the Extreme Mommy cred, but she does not want anyone else to take notice of said pimping or to do some on their own. She wants to be a nominee for a major office without ever having to demonstrate any real qualifications for said job. She wants people to buy her as a serious thinker without every having to do any intellectual work. And she wants to be a national political player after she quit one big job to basically go on a revenge tour.

Palin largely uses the “sexist” charge as a shield from being held accountable for her own pretty spectacular incompetence. And until she can mitigate all of that incompetence, I’m not all that sympathetic to all of the charges of “sexism” she and her groupies throw around.

  16. Brooke says:

    a. price, you DO understand that if you don’t have your internet posting ass in the gym, I am going to CALL you out.

Anything south of “Mario Lopez hot”, and I’ll bring it up every damn time you speak…for the rest of your life.

Here, for those confused, is “Mario Lopez hot”.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/12/conando-obrien-saves-dist_n_355196.html

    That’s your standard, boys.

  17. Delaware Dem says:

LOL, Brooke. For the record, I am not Mario Lopez Hot. I am not even Mario of the Mario Brothers Hot.

  18. a.price says:

first of all, im a chubby guy, so no my internet posting ass is at work. second, do you have any concept of satire or sarcasm? Sarah Palin is a vapid moron who happens to have good looks. She acts like every stereotype of pagent queens.. she is JUST smart enough however to be able read talking points to large uneducated crowds. For the record, no I don’t usually speak like that, in fact most of my posts take great care to make sure im not offending anyone other than right wing morons. But it is clear the only think Sarah Palin REALLY cares about is her image, SO brook sweetie, following the rules of civility the right wing has demonstrated THEY follow, every comment FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE regarding palin will include either those hummers she got stuffed in her shorts, or the effects of gravity and female mammals.
She has no political agenda. she is a barbie doll of the right, and they have so little respect for women, they will throw her out… sorry let her willing… go forth and pose is sexy cloths, then pretend to get offended when people notice.

  19. a.price says:

by the way, i also made teen preggers jokes, and special needs jokes when she exploited THOSE parts of her life for political gains. I know how to be ugly and sexist and unfair, and sarah palin deserves the worst my South Park altered mind can muster.

  20. V says:

    *sigh* Oh A.C. Slater…..

Also a.price don’t call grown women “sweetie” that IS sexist. You might as well be calling her “jiggles”.

Now get that sweet chunky ass of yours back to work.

  21. Brooke says:

    Duly noted, DD. 😀

Sarah Palin is a jackass, and that’s an affront to jackasses. She’d be a jackass at 100 pounds, or 65 pounds or 500 pounds. She’s a double triple jackass for disrespecting the flag that way. She’s a complete moron for doing cheesecake for Runner’s World. And when you run for office you lose the chance to control the use of your image.

When Charlie Crist posts pictures of himself in a speedo in “Southern Governors Today”, which i expect, any minute, I will make fun of his choices.

    But not his thighs.

  22. a.price says:

i know it is sexist. So is doll, shorty, and boobs magee.
but if brook cant see the sarcasm and satire and is gonna call me mario lopez for the rest of my life for pointing out what an empty right wing inflatable “girlfriend” sarah palin is, she gets made fun of too 🙂

sarah palin has whales for legs.

  23. a.price says:

see, she seems like the type of person who only responds to that kind of attack.

  24. Brooke says:

a, *I* understand satire and sarcasm. Do you understand offensive attitudes?

You can disrespect Sarah all you want. I certainly do. But by using sexist attacks on her looks as your tool, you disrespect OTHER women, including the ones here. Can you understand that?

Because fat dick-challenged guys have no cred, sweetie.

  25. Von Cracker says:

fat dick like a coke can? now that’s a challenge some women believe in! 😈

anyways, Sarah just keeps on soiling that bad name of hers!

shit, some people said she hangs out at the Starboard looking for Levis. Why does Sarah keep on trying to exploit young boys?

now don’t blame me, I’m just asking questions. don’t let anyone keep you from asking questions, otherwise the nazi-atheist commies win!

  26. Delaware Dem says:

For a skinny, athletic, muscle toned guy, President Obama has some serious man boobage goin on.

  27. pandora says:

He didn’t pose for that picture, Rex. That’s the difference. Palin posed for that shot. She approved the outfit. Those who say she’s talking out of both sides of her mouth are correct.

There are many professional women, and men, who would have never allowed themselves to be photographed in such a fashion. Palin set the ball in motion, and is quite happy to play the “I’m hot” card when it suits her. Bet if Mark Wahlberg ran for office we’d see a lot of this.

So… if she didn’t want to be portrayed this way, she shouldn’t have posed for the picture. I refuse to suffer fools. I also refuse to waste my time on a claim of sexism from a woman who has exploited her looks from day one. There are bigger injustices out there.

  28. V says:

    Lopez/Wahlberg 2012!

  29. V says:

(but only if the entire 2008 U.S. Olympic Swim team gets to be the cabinet)

  30. Delaware Dem says:

Is Michael Phelps the Secretary of State?

  31. a.price says:

brooke, you just dont get it. i don’t mind ug-os…. in fac ti have a lot of fat ugly chick friends. And at this point any demonstration that i would really use a womyn’s looks to do anything other than decide if i want to marry her, is just to get on YOUR nerves. Sarah is a pig… not because of that oil tanker she calls a pelvic bone, but because she wallows in her own political filth.
MARIO LOPEZ FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!

  32. arthur says:

I would pose questions to brooke again, but she doesnt answer them

  33. a.price says:

phelps is ugly as sin. Women think he is hot until he shows his teeth, or takes off the swim cap and goggles. He is what the kids call a butterface.

  34. top says:

Each and every one of you are about as pathetic as you can get. I don’t support this broad nor do I agree that this is sexist, however I do know that spending your time relating politics to movie stars will only make you exponentially dumber than you all currently are.

  35. Geezer says:

Oh boo hoo, I’m not hot enough to meet Brooke’s standard. I think I’ll go lie on the sofa and eat bon bons and watch Oprah until it passes.

  36. a.price says:

i dont think people get the sarcasm. how do you make liberals crazy? joke about ugly people.

  37. Lawrence says:

Who really knows what’s going on? Speculation is what causes so many problems today.

I thought this was an interesting perspective on what’s going on with Palin. But again, who really knows.
