JM: California, naturally, is one of those considering it. And I agree that diet sodas should not be exempt. The products should be taxed not because they’re bad for you, but, per Adam Smith, because they are luxuries — tiny ones, yes, which should make the tax on them all the more (relatively) painless.

Which cash-strapped state will launch the first tax on soda? It will require a gutsier legislature than our own, but it’ll be on the table this year, deservedly. I hope the pioneer state doesn’t fall for any lo-cal exception.

This is part of the desperate effort to stave off taxes on soda. Their lobbyists are also trial-ballooning the idea that “it’s not worth taxing it because it wouldn’t raise all that much money.” If the American politicians will swallow that one, I believe it will mark a new low in respect for the intelligence of the electorate.
