Election Results Thread
We’ll be watching the results and updating you here. VA polls close at 7 pm, Maine and NJ close at 8 pm and NY polls close at 9 pm. We could actually be in for a long election if the votes are close, because then we’ll have to wait for absentee and provisional ballots to be counted.
Places I watch for results:
Talking Points Memo
Daily Kos
Fivethirtyeight
Weird election story of the night – Hoffman in NY-23 accused Democrats of slashing tires of one of his campaign workers but it turns out the campaign worker ran over a broken bottle.
A short while ago, Conservative Doug Hoffman, the special election candidate in NY-23, breathlessly announced that frustrated Dems had slashed the tires of one of his campaign workers. Right-wing yakkers rose to heights of auto-blogotic self-asphyxiation.
Alas, closer inspection suggests, and local police confirm, said poll worker ran over a bottle.
New headline: GOP campaign worker’s tires slashed by Dem bottle.

Exit poll results:
That’s going to be close! Again, remember this is an exit poll so these numbers are probably wrong.
Obama’s approval rating seems to be about the same as his margin of victory in these states as well. Most voters are saying their vote is not about Obama and the ones who are are split about 50/50 a vote for/against Obama. So, taking any implications out of these elections is a brain dead exercise.
Comment by pandora on 3 November 2009 at 7:36 pm:
I’m kinda surprised they haven’t called the Virginia race yet.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 7:42 pm:
The results from the highly Democratic regions generally come in last, as we’ve seen in the last few VA elections. I think the demographics look good for McDonnell – the electorate is older and whiter than the 2008 electorate.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 7:58 pm:
McDonnell 62%, Deeds 37% with 32% reporting, mostly rural districts.
I’m seeing now that the race is being called for McDonnell.
Comment by jason330 on 3 November 2009 at 8:08 pm:
The Va dems sure nominated a dipshit.
Via Kos:
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 8:10 pm:
So far the political story coming out of VA right now is the O’Donnell is not outperforming McCain. Deeds is significantly underperforming Obama instead.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 8:11 pm:
Exactly Jason. I don’t know why Dems (especially Blue Dogs) haven’t learned that they can’t win by running against their own party.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 8:18 pm:
So far seeing mixed messages on the NJ-Gov race. It sounds like D turnout was high but independents and undecideds breaking heavily for Christie.
Comment by MJ on 3 November 2009 at 8:38 pm:
Anti-marriage equality referendum is losing in early returns in Maine with 63% voting not to repeal (http://www.bangordailynews.com/electionresults.html)
Black turnout in VA was 20% of the electorate last year but only 15% this year. Again, Deeds ran the worst campaign for governor since Mary Sue Terry.
Comment by MJ on 3 November 2009 at 8:45 pm:
NBC has called VA for McDonnell and GOP swept all 3 statewide offices. G-D save the Commonwealth from Ken Cuccinelli, the next AG. He’s a right-wing, anti-gay, anti-abortion fascist.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 8:53 pm:
The No on 1 folks feel really optimistic.

Good article on the VA race – http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thegaggle/archive/2009/11/03/why-creigh-deeds-lost-virginia.aspx
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 9:20 pm:
With 20% in, “No on 1″ is leading 55% to 45%.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 9:32 pm:
NJ-Gov, with 44% in:
Christie 49%
Corzine 44%
Daggett 6%
Comment by jason330 on 3 November 2009 at 9:49 pm:
Corzine knew he was standing in front of George Bush’s shit fan.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 9:50 pm:
Yeah, it’s a tough year to be an incumbent. The economy really, really sucks.
Comment by RSmitty on 3 November 2009 at 10:04 pm:
The biggest winner: my kids (and me). They no longer will recite the Christie and Corzine ads. Yay!
Funny thing is, even my seven-year-old said yesterday, “Dad, when is that election over? I hate those commercials!”
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 10:04 pm:
NY-23 according to MSNBC, 19% in
Owens (D) 51%
Hoffman (I) 44%
Scozzafava (R) 5%
I think it’s too early to make any conclusions yet.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 10:10 pm:
Surprising result of the night so far:
NYC Mayor
Bloomberg 49%
Thompson 48%
40% precincts counted
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 10:11 pm:
Bloomberg spent at least $100,000,000 on the NYC mayor race.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 10:13 pm:
MSNBC calls the NJ-Gov race for Christie.

Too bad for Jersey. Guess they are back to the Whitman borrow and spend days.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 10:26 pm:
So, if Owens win in NY-23, does this mean the GOP establishment wins over the teabaggers?
Comment by Mark O on 3 November 2009 at 10:29 pm:
Yeah. I’m sure the people Jersey will be pissed when their taxes aren’t going up. What a shame!
Comment by Mark O on 3 November 2009 at 10:32 pm:
How long do you think it will be before O’Bama is throwing Corzine under the bus? I’m surprised the White House hasn’t made a spin statement yet.
Comment by Mark O on 3 November 2009 at 10:47 pm:
Come on ACORN only 85,000 fake ballots to crank out before all of the numbers are in!!!!! You can do it!!! You did it for that dipshit Franken!
YOU CAN’T LET THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZER IN CHIEF DOWN! FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!!
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 10:54 pm:
ACORN wasn’t even in NJ.
Nets call NYC-Mayor for Bloomberg. I wonder what his $/vote total was.
Comment by Mark O on 3 November 2009 at 11:07 pm:
They aren’t in NJ, but they have 4 offices…. You have to try harder than that chump!

Comment by Mark O on 3 November 2009 at 11:10 pm:
At least Corzine was man enough to concede to Christie. I guess he isn’t 100% scum.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 11:17 pm:
Nets are starting to call it for Owens in NY-23.
I know facts don’t matter to Republicans, but here is the story on ACORN in NJ:
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 3 November 2009 at 11:19 pm:
At 50% counted, No on 1 in ME is up 50.3%-49.7%. Very close.
Still waiting for a news org to call it for Owens – I think the most conservative districts are still to report but it may not be enough to overcome 3500 vote lead for Owens.

NBC reverses Bloomberg call
Politico ^ | November 04, 2009 | Ben Smith
Wow: This is looking to be a very long night for the billionaire-incumben-frontrunner in New York. With more than a third of the votes in, it’s a one-point race. NBC called it for Bloomberg — but just reversed that call. The New York Times continues to indicate that Bloomberg has won.

Wa State Same Sex Marriage Going Down to Defeat
http://wei.secstate.wa.gov/spokane/ElectionResults/Pages/ElectionResults.aspx ^
Referendum Measure 71 concerning rights and responsibilities of state-registered domestic partners
Approved 165,340 44.89 %
Rejected 202,954 55.11 %
Total Votes 368,294 100.00%
Comment by Republican David on 4 November 2009 at 12:25 am:
Actually WA state is a civil union measure. 62% of Seattle is still out so I expect it to pass narrowly, but that should put to rest any effort to repeal the traditional marriage amendment.
Maine is a 5 point win with 80% of the vote in for traditional marriage. Once again even with all of the odds stacked against them, a bill that already passed, and persecution of those who stand for traditional values. Those under 30 split. Turnout was high.
Comment by MJ on 4 November 2009 at 1:00 am:
David, when they come to deny you your rights to live as an accepted member of society, don’t come running to us for help. What the fuck is “traditional marriage?” If you’re going by what the Founding Fathers set up, then you’re marriage is a fraud. It’s a shame that the intolerant members of our country can trample on the rights of a minority. Can’t wait until I do it to you! Time to ban all Christian-related groups from the Combined Federal Campaign and take away your IRS tax exemptions. And guess what, I know the people who can do that.
Comment by Von Cracker on 4 November 2009 at 1:07 am:
Wouldn’t something have to be taken away, unfairly, from a person or group to be considered as persecution?
Typical know-nothing, doesn’t even understand the meaning of words.
Comment by MJ on 4 November 2009 at 5:26 am:
One saving grace in VA is that the State Senate is still under Democratic control, so the rethugs won’t be able to gerrymander the state legislature or the congressional districts like they did in 2001.
Oh and GEICO Gecko, the referendum in WA was to repeal the law that allowed for domestic partnership. A “no” vote was a vote against the repeal. Your side lost.
Comment by MJ on 4 November 2009 at 6:24 am:
From the Houston Chronicle: (Roy) Morales refused to concede before all the returns had come in.
About 50 of his supporters stood in a circle and held hands while Eric Story led them in a prayer.
“Lord give us victory. We’re going to fight as conservatives,” said Story. “We’re going to see our city and our state and our nation turn around. God, it’s not over. We can’t stand by and see the lifestyle that’s assuming she’s going to win take office.”
Morales was the conservative candidate for mayor. The person they’re praying against is City Controller Annise Parker, who would become the first openly gay/lesbian to be elected mayor of a major city (a former NYC mayor still hasn’t come out publicly). Don’t you just love the tolerance?

UI:
If the spokesman from ACORN says they didn’t do any voter fraud it must be true. Come on! That’s one of the weakest statements I’ve seen. I’m sure that will hold up in all the voter fraud indictments they have.
Maybe we should start letting criminals out of jail because they say that “they didn’t do it”.
A typical liberal. Standing on their head and telling the world that they are upside down!
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 4 November 2009 at 7:02 am:
ACORN didn’t do anything in the NJ race. Are you going to believe news reports or are you going to believe some blogger who heard from someone they know in NJ? You know the report came from someone who said they “saw” ACORN in NJ, right? Are you so credulous that you believe anything written by conservative bloggers? I’m sure of course that you didn’t read the link I put up because that would pierce your Fox News bubble.
Comment by liberalgeek on 4 November 2009 at 7:18 am:
The tell is indictments. Not a word about convictions.
Comment by pandora on 4 November 2009 at 7:19 am:
You’re wasting your breath, UI. You know facts don’t matter to these guys.
Comment by MJ on 4 November 2009 at 7:44 am:
Are Lo Key and Mark O the same person? Both are schmucks.
And Lo Key, do you even know anything about Andrew Cunanan? Here’s a link to study up – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Cunanan. I take it by your asinine comment that you don’t. Perhaps your comment was a cheap attempt at a gay slur or just an equally cheap attempt at slander. In either case, you fail!
Comment by Rebecca on 4 November 2009 at 7:50 am:
Golly gosh, who let all those trolls out? You need a light-sabre to get through this thread. Good going DL team.
Comment by anon on 4 November 2009 at 8:22 am:
What got the republicans to vote for Owens? PORK. Owens promised financial aid for farmers and more cash for Fort Dix in the heavily republican rural areas. Works every time. Of course, their pork is our tax dollars.
Comment by Scott P on 4 November 2009 at 8:47 am:
What? A Congressman trying to do things for his constituents? Throw the bastard out! Anon, you do realize that that’s what they’re suppossed to do, right?
Comment by pandora on 4 November 2009 at 8:50 am:
What I can’t wait for is all those Republicans screaming voter fraud in New Jersey now that Christie’s won.
Comment by MJ on 4 November 2009 at 9:14 am:
Um, Anon, Ft. Dix is in NJ.
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 4 November 2009 at 9:20 am:
anon’s probably thinking of Fort Drum in Watertown, NY. My grandfather was stationed there in WWII before he was sent to Europe.
