Between Love and Madness Lies the New Castle County Council

Filed in Delaware by on October 30, 2009

Guidelines are now being created by the New Castle Country government that in time would allow businesses to advertise on county parkland reports The Community News. What types of ads, where the ads would go and what businesses the ads would be from are all part of the rules that will be drawn up between the administration, council and Ethics Commission.

Councilman Robert Weiner (R-Chatham) ultimately supported the bill after weeks of voicing concern that the county may not be able prohibit businesses like adult entertainment centers from advertising because of free speech laws. Assistant County Attorney Will Davis said sufficient case law gives governments discretion over the kind of businesses it sells advertising to.

So no ads from adult entertainment centers? But would the council accept ads from religious organizations? Would that cross the line of the separation of church and state?

  1. I can see advertising being used on some of the athletic fields on county parkland. At Bonsall, for example, you’ve got baseball/softball diamonds, soccer fields and the like. Potholes on the soccer field could be sponsored by First State Orthopedic. Maybe the potholes could even be mainTAINED by First State Orthopedic.

And maybe the benches will be sponsored by ING. Of course, they’d then have to be split up into smaller benches.
