Back in the 80's a state senator from down state got stopped for DUI he made the trooper call the head of the State police and the charges were never filed. When this came to light MADD backed the head of the State police in stead of demanding that the Senator be arrested and face the music. It appears that Danny Simpson made the right move by not allowing charges to go forward for he got a government job after he retired.

In some cases it is better that the origanizations do NOT fold but instead change their focus to help elsewhere - the best example is March of Dimes.

Wow, phil. They don't have programs for offenders? That's nuts! Hopefully you found another organization to volunteer with.

Months ago, I spoke to Nancy Raynor. I had entered the DUI first offender's program almost 5 years ago and wanted to volunteer with MADD as a way to start to make it up to my community. She was excited to have such an enthusiastic volunteer lined up, but first I had to fill out the application. On there, it asks if you have ever been arrested for a crime. I was honest and put my non-conviction DUI on there....never heard back from Ms. Raynor...f%#k em.

From the article:

""Without your help, there will no longer be local staff or a local office and the details of local contact efforts are still unclear," said Raynor."

IMHO they would have a lot more credibility if they take the money out of it and become an all-volunteer organization.

Do organizations that achieve their stated goals actually have the sense to then fold-up? Or does money coming in become the driving force to be continued regardless of whether or not its doing any good?

I think you're right anon that MADD's mission needs to change. They should keep up the education portion.

MADD has succeeded in making drunk driving broadly socially unacceptable. They won - good on them. Now they need to pack it in. There is no future in them continuing to risk corruption by getting in bed with law enforcement and keep lobbying to make penalties even more ridiculously stringent.

Well, they've been in operation 30 years and I've never seen a sign of them, so it may not be entirely their support of Atkins that caused the trouble.

However, my personal operating budget is significantly less than $50,000 a year, so those in a donating state of mind may consider me a thrifty alternative. ;)
