Delaware Prepares for Implementation of “National ID”

Filed in National by on October 17, 2009

Delaware is close to implement the Real ID when issuing driver licenses according to the News Journal. There are some real problems with the implementation of Real ID — so many problems that some 15 states have passed “binding legislation” to reject  the Real ID Act of 2005, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Some issues that we will all deal with are the following:

  • Longer waits at the DMV as people try to produce the correct documentation
  • If your name has changed and it is not change is all federal and state databses you will run into problems
  • You must provide a primary address which can be a problem if you are homeless, a student or John McCain
  • Law enforcement officers sometimes use official addresses for their protection will no longer be able to do so

More importantly, if you do not meet all the provisions under the Real ID, you will be given an ID that will allow you to drive, but will not allow you to enter a federal building or board an airplane according to the News Journal.  One is left wondering whey the Delaware Legislature did not pass a bill rejecting the Real ID.

Can’t we just skip this phase and jump to laser etched bar codes or implanted RFID tags?

and illegal immigrants will still break the law entering the U.S.

No joke women who got married and didn’t change their name on their soical security card will have this problem.

One problem may just be in how your name is presented on all of the databases. The airlines were responsible to run the passenger names against the government watch lists and the TSA will be doing that shortly. They want more identity information, so people are being asked for at least a Middle Initial when you reserve a seat. If your middle initial is not on your driver’s license or passport (or — in only one story I heard, if your middle name is printed but you reserved with an initial) you may run into issues.

There are strong recommendations out there for people who fly to do the work to get one name on all of your legal travel docs, your credit cards (that you book flights with) and your frequent flyer accounts.
