The role of the media in the “Summer of Spittle” has something that has been under-examined. I don’t understand why the media acts surprised that Republicans are able to gin up outrage by throwing hissy fits. Hint to the media: you don’t have to cover it. Ignore them. It will go away.
The media has not even tried to educate the public as to what the “public option” is. It’s no wonder so many people are helplessly confused.
At some point, they’ll publish it themselves. Sort of like the examination of their Iraq coverage — where they concluded that they were too credulous, too trusting of the BushCo, too involved with not offending the administration and their supporters. It will be ponderous and not too deep and they’ll do the same thing again.
If you expect rational response from the Media you will wait in vain. Todays Media has adopted the Tabloid as thier model, hype and hysteria sells. The more absurd and childish the better it sells.Enter the Republicans.

And if somebody seriously examined it, how would they get their results published?

So, so true, wikwox!
The solution to the problem is to substitute the Lehrer News Hour, CSPAN, the Diane Rehm radio show, NPR, BBC, The Economist, and Newsweek.
