Being A Lady Means Never Having Any Fun
Eva Lorraine Molina at Townhall brings us a morality tale of how feminism is ruining women and means they’ll never get married.
The feminist movement’s war on conservatism in America has killed chivalry and trained too many women to think and act like men. As a result, many young conservative women do not know what it means to be a lady. Here is a good definition:
A lady does not tell dirty jokes along with men and she does not tolerate men telling dirty jokes in her presence. She does not swear, and she is not considered “one of the guys.” In spite of new fashion trends, a lady always dresses appropriately, leaving a lot to the imagination. When at a social gathering, a lady does not do things she will regret the next day. Above all, a lady is well-mannered, dignified, gracious, and kind.
In other words, a “lady” is always conservative and never has any fun. Ms. Molina is writing an essay to convince women that things that are fun aren’t actually fun. Good luck with that!
Our society holds conservatives to a higher moral standard. When a woman acts like a lady she gains the respect both of men and other women. Besides, why would a conservative woman ever want to be mistaken for a liberal woman?
I have heard many of my male peers place women into three categories: “the ones to mess around with, the ones to date, and the ones to marry.” Though this is a rather crude way of categorizing women, it shows that men do recognize and value the qualities that make a woman a lady. Ladies are the kind of women that men can take home to Mom and Dad and that most men want to marry. Being considered “marriage material” is an indicator that a woman is to be respected; most men who deem a woman as such treat her with the utmost respect. For men, ladies are at the top of the female totem pole, and conservative women need to take pride in the fact that they are worthy of time, love, and commitment.
Crazy me, I thought all people should be treated with respect. This essay was written by a college student who is apparently about 100 years old. She repeats the all-too-common belief that a woman’s greatest accomplishment in life is to get married. Doesn’t it seem like there is whole industry devoted in convincing women that marriage is the pinnacle of their life? I call it the princess industry.
I have this other crazy belief that marriage should actually be a partnership of equals. I don’t want to be married for the sake of being married. The ironic thing is that divorce rates are higher in conservative states like Mississippi and Alabama and lowest in places like Massachusetts (which allows gays to destroy heterosexual marriage). I also think that marriage is not necessarily a woman’s greatest accomplishment. It’s not that I’m against marriage or anything but I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Aren’t there are other things that are more important – like graduating, getting your first job or buying a house?
I guess according to Ms. Molina I don’t qualify as a “lady.” (I shouldn’t even ask since I’m not a conservative and won’t qualify.) I want to be able to drink beer, tell dirty jokes, curse on the rare occasion and show cleavage. I’m also a proud feminist who is dedicated to the radical proposition that women are people, too.
P.S. Is a t-shirt that says “I’d rather be waterboarding” something that a “lady” wears? This lady stuff is just so confusing.

Exactly Cassandra. I’m struck thinking of women like Jenny Sanford, Wendy Vitter, Ted Haggard’s wife and others who have had the shell-shocked look while the husband confesses to his sins. No doubt those women thought that they did everything right. There is definitely a different kind of right-wing marriage that involves man in charge, woman at home.

Conservative men resent sexually active women because even though they are active, they won’t sleep with THEM. They want young women to take a public chastity pledge so they can rationalize THAT’S the reason she isn’t interested in them.
As for why conservative women resent sexually active women – not much mystery there.

Even Bloomberg (and the brain-dead Amity Schlaes) can’t document pay disparity.
Pay disparity is finding that a male and a female staffer doing the same work, with the same background and experience, are being paid differently.
A calculation of the money than the men vs the women make in any organization of some size gets you to the same kind of disparity that Schales does.
But here’s what’s cool — this White House actually posted up the salaries of all of their staffers, unlike any other before. What does that mean? You might actually be able to get to some real analysis of pay disparities unlike this silly BS.

It isn’t clear whether she took the totals across all job descriptions to come up with that number or if she compared similar jobs.

This is pretty clear — you total up the amount of money the girls get and divide by total number to get the average female staffer salary.
You total up the amount of money the boys get and divide by total number to get the average male staffer salary.
The difference between the two is the “pay disparity” she thinks she has discovered.
Here’s another hint — if you have actually spent the time and energy to compare men and women in the same job, two things would be evident:
*ALOT of pointing to all of the work you’ve just done
*Way more detail (as in the analysis by job!) than this silliness.

And no, it’s still not clear, the $9,168 number could be from just the people listed as “staff assistant” which may be what she means by “average staffer”. But we just don’t know because how the number was reached wasn’t explained.
Well, I guess we already know that math isn’t a conservative strong suit. But this number by the brain-dead Schlaes may mean something to people not accustomed to asking where this info comes from. If she had something more precise that this, it wouldn’t have taken you guys until now to try to trot out this talking point.
And as for the White House data — I was pointing to the White House released data (release at the same time it went to Congress) and is in a searchable form.

I took the job description “staff assistant,” which I’m considering the “average staffer” and included “blah blah blah staff assistants” and “Staf assistants to the blah blah blah.”
I added up the women’s pay, divided by the number of women, and did the same for the men. The women came out ahead by $14.29, which wouldn’t even cover the cost of my lunch.
That is some lunch then.
Is that 14.29 per year or did you do this on a hourly basis?
If it’s on an hourly basis, the men should apply for a fair wage using the Lily Ledbetter act.

Maria, I’d just like to stop to thank you for doing the math yourself. That must have taken a chunk of time out of your day. Part of the problem with politics is that people often don’t take the time to fact check anything.
These are “staff assistants” which are the bottom of the pecking order, and this is the deal:
20 female staff assistants making a total of $756,000 = $37,800 yr
14 male staff assistants making a total of $529,000 = $37,785.71 yr
difference of $14.29…BUT…
I may do everyone with “director” in their name next, a higher salaried position may yield a different result. Unless someone else wants to do it…:)

I’m late to this…I cannot keep up these past 2 weeks w/ sending everyone back to school. FWIW–you totally miss the whole “lady” thing. Like a gentleman, it’s all about discretion. So while you may think it’s an uptight puritannical boundary issue of “Sex in the City” vs. “A Day in the Life of a Shaker”–it’s more of a call on the carriage of behavior, display of indiscretions, and public vulgarity. The “ladies” are having fun too, don’t need to be campy about things, and have an easier time “cleaning up”. Just like our gentleman brothers, who don’t have to be cads or mashers, and maintain tons of fun without the branding of gigolo–just because discretion, not dilettantism was the choice employed. Perception.
I’m more troubled by the one-size-fits-all, this-is-how-you-must-behave aspects of the post. I grew up in a place that was had those rigid gender boundaries and I found it extremely stifling. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being modest or non-vulgar but the Townhall post is coming close to the men and women are different species type of thinking that bothers me.
