Sotomayor Confirmation Vote Today

Filed in National by on August 6, 2009

The confirmation vote to make Sonia Sotomayor the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court is expected today. The confirmation is all but inevitable, the only remaining question is what the final vote total will be. Thirty Republicans have announced they are voting no, including Orrin Hatch who has never voted no on a SCOTUS nominee before. At least eight Republicans have announced that they are voting yes. It’s hard to believe that this process has devolved so quickly – the confirmation vote on Ruth Bader Ginsburg was 96-3.

Update: Sotomayor is confirmed 68-31 (the totals were announced by Senator Franken). Congratulations to new Associate Justice Sotomayor.

It’s not so hard to believe. Today’s GOP is demanding strict ideological adherence and for some reason the party in bad need of expanding its base seems set on being captured and controlled by its wingnuts. And for the GOP ideological adherence is lurking behind the idiocy of “empathy”, “she’s a racist” and a bunch of other babble that had little to do with her real judicial record.

It is important to understand how wrenching this vote is to every Republican Senator. If they vote Yes, they anger the NRA and most of the base. If they vote No, they alienate Hispanics. Either way, they piss off a bunch of voters without really gaining anything. They are truly between a rock and a hard place, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of guys.

  3. Liberals can’t answer three questions.

Is she the best legal mind available?

Would she have been considered if she were not Latino or a woman.

Should Obama expect GOP senators to vote for her when he voted against Roberts and Alito.

The answer to all is No.

If you can watch from where you are, the vote for Judge Sotomayor is on CSPAN.

Harry Reid is speaking now and I think the vote starts shortly after this.

  6. I agree, Congrats to Justice Sotomayor.

Once again, Protack, speaking from under the safety of his “sugar helmet”, offers up another salient barb from the well-worn quiver of the Neo-Con Socially-Retarded Party:

“Would she have been considered if she were not Latino or a woman.”

I never tire of correcting Baba Booey on here, and so, I will do it again. Protack, listen carefully: I TOLD you not to be stupid, you moron. Now show your brains, or your tits, or G.T.F.O!

Also, let me also let my voice join the chorus of people who have it right and congratulate Justice Sotomayor!

You horrible Protackian idiot, Judge Sotomayor has more judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in 70 years. So the answer to your question is an obvious YES. That you ask it proves your racism and sexism. Go to hell.

  10. Amen, DD. Sotomayor is more qualified than Alito or Roberts were. That Protack assumes that can’t be true proves his racism and sexism. Thank you for saying it, DD.
