Breaking Rumor: Coons to the Obama Administration?

Filed in National by on August 6, 2009

UPDATE: We have spoken to a Coons aide, who says they have heard nothing of the sort. Not really a strong denial, but this rumor may well be false. Indeed, as I think about this, what kind of position would Obama choose Coons for? Nothing comes to mind. In fact, I always thought Coons future was elsewhere, like in the congressional delegation. What if Coons is preparing for a run for Congress. Since we are dealing in rumor and speculation anyway, what if Castle has decided not to run, and neither has Biden. That would mean Carney will run for the Senate, and that would leave Coons to run for Congress. Hmmmmmm…..

Rumor has it that Paul Clark was all over the county building today talking with managers and directors about projects and personnel, as well as spending quite a bit of time conferring with Chris Coons. Our tipsters asked around and apparently there is some word about Coons being tapped by the Obama Administration in some capacity, requiring his resignation as County Executive, which would mean, to our collective horror, that Paul Clark would take over.

  1. Wow. That’s a hot rumor! I guess that means another special election. I imagine there will be candidates coming out of the woodwork for this one. I wonder what capacity that Coons would serve in? I can’t wait to hear!

  2. ‘Bulo would imagine that Clark would serve until the next General Election. Not sure that a Special Election would be required. For that matter, ‘bulo’s not even sure that Clark is the automatic successor, although logic would dictate that it was so.

Plus, you’d likely be looking at TWO special elections if that’s what’s called for: Most likely candidates for Council President would be sitting Council members…and THEN there’d be another one to fill the seat of whomever wins.

And, as far as that non-denial denial from the Coons folks, absence of proof does not constitute proof of absence. It is not outside of the realm of possibility that it’s true.

    Crikey!

Hopefully, Coons will go the way of most NNC county execs…to the dungheap of lying, sleazy politicians….never to he heard from again as in Rita who?, Dennis who?, etc.

If the president is looking for additional ‘talent’ why would Coons’ name appear even on the long list? What has he done or is the poster going on the ‘promote incompetence’ system.

As to Clark: there is a letter to the editor in the Community News suggesting he resign…now there’s an idea whose time is past due.

unlike Sue, alot of people think he has done a good job in a difficult situation, and will likely be tapped for a future position….

  5. John Manifold says:

    ยง 1114. Vacancy in office.

Whenever a vacancy occurs in the office of County Executive by reason of death, resignation, removal from office or other cause, the President of the County Council shall serve as County Executive until the latter office is filled as a result of an election. If a vacancy in the office of County Executive occurs more than 30 days prior to the date of a primary election in which county officers are nominated, the vacancy shall be filled for the remainder of the term in the next succeeding general election and the County Executive elected in this manner shall take office on the first Tuesday following such election. If a vacancy in the office of County Executive occurs less than 30 days prior to the date of a primary election in which county officers are nominated, the vacancy shall be filled for the remainder of the term by the President of the County Council. If the President of the County Council becomes County Executive, the President’s office as an elected official of the county governing body shall become vacant.

I checked in with some contacts who tell me that this rumor has been flying about for a month or so. They don’t think that there is anything to it, either. Especially since it may mean that Coons may never be elected to anything ever again if he leaves NCCo in the hands of Paul Clark.

  7. Maybe Clark is just a little too aggressive in wanting Coons’s job?

  8. cassandra_m says:

Or maybe reflecting a downsizing of the rumored Coons ambition to run for a state Congressional office…

  9. For those who don’t hang around the county building, Clark is ALWAYS running around like that. He has no day job and he has his nose in every project his wifey is making money on.

  10. Tom S says:

Now that we have sports gambling to solve our Revenue problems, we should add government gambling.

Bets on whether Coons is leaving, votes in Congress, whether Castle is running…it would be much more entertaining since they take bribes.

  11. anon2 says:

It seems Coon’s right hand man, Nello has left NCC for greener pastures. Maybe there is something to the rumor.

  12. Salisbury Sue says:

Well, now you’re just getting the ‘Nello news’???

The way I hear it is that it had nothing to do w/greener pastures….so the question is why did he leave an unbelievable lawn service county contract reportedly worth $250,000? and where in God’s green earth will he find a contract to replace it? They don’t grow on trees.

  13. The Paoli Brothers also run an electrical contracting business that DOES BUSINESS with Chris Coons’ administration. They had the contract for the “Taj Mahall Public Safety Building in Minquidale. I believe that they also had the contract for the flat-out ugly excuse for a public building that is the new Kirkwood Library.

Maybe Coons is wising up and dumping these gross conflicts of interest that should have landed him in front of the HA Joke of a County Ethics Commission (my apologies to the honorable Chairman).

  14. anon2 says:

Coons to DC….what a frickin riot! I doubt this is true if it is we have to be concerned about WHO in the Obama camp thinks this man should go anywhere outside New Castle County. Maybe Chris is fearful of the 5 pages of sheriff sales listed in the paper yesterday. In order to get to the sheriff sale status it means these homes were foreclosed on at least one year ago. Way to go Chris…the peter principle is in affect.

  15. anoni says:

    Paoli Bros???
    Grass cutting???

what are you two talking about?

  16. anon says:

Please ignore Nancy–her crazy conspiracy theories are unfounded.

  17. Salisbury Sue says:

anoni: Check it out….a BIG ‘landscaping’ contract.
re: electric contract? I would not doubt it.

The Bros. Paoli not only have to keep the home fires burning but they must keep their respective mistresses too….a major undertaking in today’s economy. How. do. they. do. it?

Check under every county employee to get the real reason Nello left and why Jimmy resigned as NCC Dem Party Chair. Maybe things are getting too hot….these jokes are as creepy as Coons.
