Election Day in SD 19!

The special election to fill Senator Thurman Adams’s seat is today. The polls are open from 7 AM – 8 PM. This should be an interesting race, there are four candidates: Republican Joe Booth (current Rep. for the 37th RD), Democrat Polly Adams Mervine (Senator Adams’s daughter), Libertarian Wendy Jones and Independent Matt Opalinski. Booth is probably favored to win this race but with four candidates anything can happen!

I’m not sure about Booth being favored….cronyism goes a long way in this part of the state. I guess we’ll see.

The exciting stuff will happen towards the end of the day. Now is the calm before the storm. The reports I am hearing is that Bridgeville is maintaining steady turnout while Greenwood is currently low. Lincoln has been reported to have higher than expected minority turnout, this coming from a Booth supporter. I have not been there yet today. He suspects that Lincoln will lean Mervine while Bridgeville will split Booth/Mervine.
I was in Georgetown during a slow period, but campaign supporters there state that there was a small wait early this morning.
Earlier in the day I am expecting the senior voters, which Tobin states is the majority of the voting block. I am also assuming middle aged and young voters will flock to the polls after work. Bridgeville had heavy senior support earlier.
Some voters, when I handed them a Wendy flyer, mistook her for Mervine. Hopefully that will Pat Buchannan a few votes our way, could go the other way for all I know. Some people assume there is always only one woman in the race.
I am expecting a more favorable reception from the middle aged to younger crowd than the older crowd because of party loyalty. Then again, party protest votes may come from the older generation.
The whole dang race is a toss up.

I had to wait a few minutes at Redden Community. Outide were 3 Republicans and 2 Dems – nobody from Opaliski or Jones, but the O-guy made up for it with signs.

We were limited with our staff, and kept it to the top 3 polling locations, Bridgeville and Greenwood Fire Halls, and the Higher Education building at Del Tech in Georgetown.
