Bud Light?

Filed in National by on July 30, 2009

Fox News is mad because President Obama picked a beer brewed by a Belgian company. (I wish I were lying). I’m mad at the President because he picked the second shittiest beer ever. (The shittiest being Bud Light with Lime)

In a world where everything is political and overanalyzed, I’m thinking bud light was his appeal to the everyman, trying to get away from the whole “celebrity” / “liberal elistist” stereotype. At least I’d like to think Obama has better taste than the favorite beer of rednecks everwhere. Personally, I was dissapointed not to see Yuengling make an appearance, especially for Joe Biden.

    Perhaps not.

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29/37389

    $1.59 for a 24 oz. can.

  3. Art Downs says:

Yuengling may be the “Rodney Dangerfield” of beers but their porter is really decent. It may not rank with Guiness but there is a certain cost effectiveness.

Call me a beer snob for badmouthing “Sudsweiser” but how can anything made from rice be called the King of Beers?

    Marketing must be everything.

My current favorite is Newcastle Brown Ale that I first tasted at Go Fish in Rehoboth. I got a special tap so I could enjoy it on draft at home. Guiness on draft is a bit of a problem with the special gas mixture that is needed to assure maximum flavor.

  4. Tom S says:

My favorite is Coors…made from well water in Golden, Colorado.

  5. A. price says:

it would be……. Rocky Mountain piss.
I want to know what joe had. i really approve of sgt crowley’s Blue Moon.. and Gate’s Red Stripe…yay beer!. But Joe better have had Dogfish Head in that mug.

and ….. wouldn’t Fixed News have had a problem no matter what beer he drank? I personally think Obama is not a beer guy. Im guessing he’s into either really good gin, or something really out there like ouzo, or mezcal

  6. jason330 says:

It is an interesting question. I know Joe does not drink.

  7. Marty says:

Joe Biden is a teetotaler and had a non-alcoholic beer. Don’t remember what the name is. Also, heard this a.m. on TV that Obama prefers red wine.

  8. The shittiest being Bud Light with Lime
Ehh…disagree. I can stomach that one, but certainly not choice. Then again, I have been known to tolerate horrible suds for a cause…a cause known as I was a college student and barely had any funds. Of what do I speak? Natural Light for Mug Night at the Stone Balloon. You could either drink it from your mug or lick it off of the bottom of your shoe the next day, or both! Between Mug Night and the next day under-shoe surprise, it was like the party never ended.

  9. Dorian Gray says:

Ah, a beer thread. This is right in my wheelhouse considering my well known functional alcoholism. Coors is shit, by the way and I believe Coors brews the white beer the cop drank (Blue Moon).

German Weißbier in general is fantastic (Spaten’s Franzenkaner and Weihenstaphaner), but Blue Moon is terrible.

I heard conflicting stories re: the Prof’s choice. Was it the Jamaican Red Stripe or Boston’s Sam Adams?

  10. sillypoorandlazyperson says:

    sam adam’s light

Blue Moon seems to have replaced Yuengling in many local taprooms, and even at Frawley Stadium, which is a triumph of marketing prowess. Blue Moon is OK but nothing to cheer about. It is true that I have grown a bit tired of Yuengling, but a freshly tapped keg of Yuengling is still one of the best brews around.

  12. Dorian Gray says:

I agree 100%… Yuengling is a bit tired but still good. I hardly ever drink it anymore but I certainly wouldn’t object if someone ordered a round. Blue Moon is bad. If you want a “mass produced” Belgian white that’s pretty decent, drink Hoegaarden.

By the way, since the time is approaching, the best draft lager in the world will be available soon… Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier! Classic Märzen from Munich and available in 50 liter barrels from Brewers Outlet on 202.

I’ll be at the Oktoberfest again thing year drinking the fresh stuff… C’mon DV… spend an extra 2 days in Europe with us… Holland will be fun but you need to hit the Oktoberfest!!

  13. For all New Castle and Chester County locals and anyone 1000 miles nearby, the ever so great Kennett Brew Fest is fast-approaching! I have nothing to gain from this (no association), but always believe in sharing the good times! I am still trying to work out attending myself, but logistics (as in arranging that I will not drive and need tickets) still need to be crafted.

  14. mike w. says:

The only thing worse he could have chosen would’ve been Beast. Even something like Yuengling, Dundee’s Honey Brown, or Shiner Bock would have been a good choice.

Perhaps Obama just isn’t a beer guy and he chose Bud Light as a political move meant to identify with rural Americans?

I’ve never been a big fan of Blue Moon. As Dorian said, Hoegaarden is a better belgian white if you’re into that style. I’m generally a fan of darker beers.

Oh yes, and I really don’t get these Lime flavored beer. BL Lime is gross. Tastes like piss beer with a strong artificial lime flavoring in the aftertaste.

  15. Truth Teller says:

If it were up to me I would have served them the beer that always comes out on top in taste test . And that being nothing but IRON CITY go figure. Never squeeze lime into a beer it’s there to keep the flies away it just sits on top of the bottle.

  16. Suzanne says:

Ahh – it warms my German-born heart reading about people liking German Weißbier and Hofbräu.
It’s probably so good, because the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law) has been in place since 1500something. I can’t believe that they call stuff with pumpkin in it beer here in the good Ole US of A.

Germans don’t want anybody messing with their beer and while exporters want them to lose the restrictions, I don’t think it will happen. All the exporters ahve to do is not call it a beer – BIG DEAL. After all, if it isn’t made from nothing other then water, hops, yeast, and barley-malt, it isn’t beer.

As for the president picking Bud Light — ewwwwwwwwwwwww

By the way, if anybody here knows a liquor store that carries SCHULTHEISS BERLINER WEISSE – please let me know.

  17. Dorian Gray says:

Well consider your heart warmed! I love both… and I hate pumpkin ales, lime beers, US micros that try to out-hop each other, etc., etc., etc.

As far as Schultheiß Berliner Weiß, never had the pleasure. State line in Elkton does carry some “obscure” stuff. They have a Turkish lager I like called Efes.

You could also try Frank’s in Wilmington. Both shops are the only places I can get my favorite Belgian Trappist Ale… Rochefort 8, so I imagine they are you best chances.

  18. sillypoorandlazyperson says:

    suzanne,

not sure where you are located, but Brewers Outlet in chaddsford, Pa (rt202 1mile across state line from de) has everything

  19. Suzanne says:

I am in Sussex County – fat chance I can get it here – but I wouldn’t mind driving up north and stopping somewhere on my way to Trader Joe’s. I also need to plan a trip to Baltimore to my favorite German butcher at some point.
You can take a girl out of Germany and make her American, but you can’t take the country out of the girl 🙂 Some things I really miss, even after 15 years here.
For those who don’t know – but BERLINER WEISSE isn’t actually a beer per se because you add a syrup (usually woodruff flavor) to the WEISSE before drinking it. It’s popular on hot summer days. So is RADLER by the way, which is half Pilsener and half lemon-lime soda, or a McTwo – I believe that is half beer and half Lemonade. I know, it’s beer bastardized, but on a hot summer day it is refreshing without the buzz.

I don’t like “flavored” beers but I don’t mind flavoring my beer AFTER THE FACT. Sort of like mixing wine and apple juice or wine and seltzer water – both quite common over there.

Thanks for the tips on the places to check out, I will have to make some calls.

  20. sillypoorandlazyperson says:

it is 10 minutes from trader joes on 202

  21. Dorian Gray says:

I am a Rus’n guy myself – white beer and lemon soda. But I like Radler as well… I am also a bit of a bicyclist 🙂 I think I prefer the carbonation in the soda…

Good luck finding a spot “down South”…

  22. As a non drinker I can’t comment on the beer but when I think who should have apologized, Gates or Crowley I have decided Obama should.

He again proves he is not deliberate and circumspect enough to be President.

    Mike Protack

  23. G Rex says:

“Joe Biden is a teetotaler and had a non-alcoholic beer.”

No, Joe Biden is an alcoholic, and needs to pretend for public consumption that he doesn’t drink. Anyone who saw him jump off the poolhouse at the (you know who you are) country club can back that up.

And Barack Obama is a Muslim, so he can’t drink actual beer – drinking a Bud Light is the same as drinking water, so he’s still haram.

  24. jason330 says:

    where’ve you been G?

  25. G Rex says:

Been so very busy, Jason. We should have a beer summit.
