Good Luck With That

Filed in National by on July 29, 2009

Seems the Birthers have gotten too big for their britches.  Good luck putting that genie back in the bottle.

It’s now looking like a lot of prominent Republicans, ranging from party leaders to big-name pundits that we usually expect to make outrageous partisan attacks, are doing something they’d been previously neglecting: Definitively cracking down on the Birthers, rather than playing to the conspiracy theorists allowing this stuff to continue festering among their activist base.

Personally, I plan on enjoying every minute of this in-fighting.  Unless… anyone envisions a scenario where the Birthers give up their quest.  Yeah, like that’s gonna happen after they’ve been encouraged by their leaders every step of the way.

  1. Well, former House member Roy Blunt (I think he was Majority Whip at one time) has signed on to the birthers. I think we’re starting to see the big crack – half of the party wants to talk about how Obama wants to kill grandma and the other half wants to talk about the birth certificate.

We warned Republicans this would happen. I only hope (but I’m not holding my breath) that Republicans will reign in the virulent racism.

Thers at Whiskeyfire has a great observation on this:

The only reason the birthers might cause serious problems for the GOP is that the birthers are such obvious rubes. Apart from that, though, what will probably end up happening is that the GOP bigwigs will keep up with the doubletalk until a more exciting and ever so slightly more plausible nutty conspiracy theory comes along that the whole moron gang can cheerfully get behind and bray about endlessly, all family troubles in the past buried and forgotten.

Of which the “killing old people” dishonesty seems to be the next shiny object.

I have trouble seeing the birthers drop this issue after so much encouragement. Oh, they’ll jump on the “killing old people” talking point, but since they love stupidity they’ll be hard pressed to let go of the birth certificate.

It’s hilarious watching Roy Blunt claim that Obama has never had to produce his birth certificate. He produced it. I’ve seen it (online). It’s real – and it’s spectacular (lame Seinfeld joke). Meanwhile, has anyone ever seen Blunt’s birth certificate? Has anyone seen the deed to his house? How do we know he legally resides in Missouri, as constitutionally he must?
