Polly Running Scared ?
Maria at DelawarePolitics reports that Polly Adams has said yes to Thursday’s Sussex League of Women Voter’s forum.
It is easy to get the impression that the SC Dems felt Polly could pull the “special election glide” into office without disclosing what she thinks about the issues. She still may be able to for that matter.
Darn, I was going to go to Milton – but I suppose I will have to go to the League’s event now. That may mean I can’t go to the Sussex Drinking LIberally..darn.
About damn time she shows up for an event.
Just have the drinking after the League event, I have a feeling that you guys on the left will have a lot or reason to imbibe afterward.

True, Geezer. I’m not sure if I would blame the SC Dems. They picked Eddie Parker originally, and it sounds like there’s a split amongst them.
Y’all are “progressive,” right? You might as well write off the Democrats from Kent on down, with the sometime exception of the beach areas. You can root for Democrats, I suppose, but nobody who reaches office is “progressive” by any measure but a relative one.
I live in Seaford, (with nominal Democrat Venables as Senator). I usually just undervote or write in my own name. I think I’d rather vote for an honest Republican than a DINO.
Of course she’s scared. An email was widely circulated this afternoon confirming my post about Pollyanna at Leah Betts’ house. As I’ve said before, vote “none of the above.” I wonder if Uncle Thurm is turning over in his grave seeing how his darling daughter has screwed up her campaign.

I’m looking into rumors that Booth is not conservative enough for some Jesus-y GOPers in the 19th. I’m not kidding.
Booth signed onto the letter urging the IR school district to adopt Jesus as the district’s official diety, but he has done something to piss off the thin skinned “values” voters.
While both Common Cause and the League of Women Voters claim to be ‘bipartisan’ they are rather biased to port.
When I sent a small contribution to Common Cause some years ago, the acknowledgement had my name misspelled. The same quaint spelling appeared on a lot of begging letters over the names of the likes of Ted Kennedy.
Art, your name being on a solicitation for Sen. Kennedy has nothing to do with an organization being non-partisan or not. Many, many non-profits (on both sides) sell their mailing lists to third parties who then sell them to others. Easiest way to avoid this is to ask the non-profit you are donating to not to sell your name.
Wow, Jason. So who are the values voters going to get behind, then? Did Booth do something bad like suggest that maybe gay people are human?
In response to what I’ve heard & read so far:
Something I’d like to point out is that both the conservatives/right-wingers & the liberals/left-wingers have in common — and that’s imploring the “Big Brother & The Nanny-State” (read gov’t at all levels) to intercede _for them_ on issues which they have a particular personal interest at stake; this is dangerous & leads down the slippery slope for at least two reasons:
1. You give up your responsibility for exercising your own power to change your life and transfer that power to a corrupt & self-serving entity. Any gov’t big & powerful enough to give you all you want is also strong enough to take everything you have.
2. Liberty & responsibility go hand-in-hand; you just can’t have one without the other. Giving up your responsibilities then also gives up your liberties.
Look, I advocate getting the State out of our lives… not advocating increasing intrusion and interference in our schools, our homes, our businesses and our lives (& that includes our churches, whichever ones we chose). Do yourself a favor & put a lid on the emotionalism-based knee-jerk reactive thinking & take a few minutes to cogitate on that concept. I’ll wait. But make a decision by Aug. 3rd. Then vote (for me, hopefully!) — or forever hold your peace, because you’ll have no right to complain.
Those single-issue voters out there, & you know who you are because I’ve heard from a few, who feel strongly enough about their own pet issues to expect me to impale myself on each & every one of them in order to make a Pyrrhic sacrifice should check to see if they have the “stones” to put their own time, effort & money where their mouths are & run for office themselves. I guarantee you’ll come away with a much clearer & greatly-expanded picture.
So, some feel they have no pony in this race? Think about what a change having a truly Libertarian representative in this office will mean. If you get past the self-thinking & emotionalism, you’ll find that a Libertarian is the best chance for getting the life that I understand you actually want & deserve.
If you’re happy with the way things are, if you’d like more of the same, bigger & bigger gov’t, getting ever-more intrusive into every aspect of your lives, go ahead & vote for the status quo. Nothing will change. That means voting for either the Republicrats or the Demopublicans.
There’s a saying, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten. It has also been said that the people get the gov’t that they deserve. You must ask yourselves, “What do I deserve?”
Activate yourselves! Legalize yourselves! Learn about what being a Libertarian actually means & think just what having Libertarian principles can do for you, your children & your community.

I don’t consider it “nanny state” thinking to say the state should play role in ensuring that children get vaccinated against Polio. Or that people in rural areas should get electricity. If it is “nanny state” think then “Nanny Statism” has allowed us to enjoy modernity. Thanks Nanny!

no you don’t – which is why you are against bills such as SB121 and marriage rights for gays and lesbian on the federal level. What do you think we should have instead? There are times where family relations ships matter a lot – for example in terms of inheritance, child support, custody, survivor benefits, etc.
The life I want is the one where church and religious beliefs stay out of my life and where all people are guaranteed at least a basic way of life upon which they can improve through hard work and perseverance – to get that, the government has to be involved in terms of health care and for other basic needs.
I am not convinced you are less of the good ole and more of the new — but neither are any of the other candidates.
I felt Wendy’s post was a bit insulting as well.
I especially liked her usage of the words “Pyrrhic sacrifice” and her attack on “single issue voters” that have “pet issues”. Yeah, there eis a good way to get people to vote for you – insult them.

“polio” – can you be sure it’s just polio if it’s the State that mandates it? Should it perhaps be a better idea that educating on the pros & cons rather than sticking a needle willy-nilly into your child filled with whatever they decide to tell you is in it? What if, through viral gene replacement technology, for instance, thought patterns & personalities could (& even might be) changed to eliminate “undesirables”, for instance, & ensure a dull, compliant populace? Mandated by the State?
“electricity” – it is naturally in the best interests of power & utility companies to make their products & services available to as many people as possible. Between simple competition & public pressure this can & has been done. Mandating the State to twist the arms of private businesses is just a step away from nationalizing the entire private industry. Personally, we’re in the process of getting off the grid entirely. That’s an alternative. But that’s our CHOICE.
I’m not against HB5/SB121 — I’m against the State interfering with the rights of consenting adults to contract within the sanctity of their home & whatever church (if they choose to involve a church) they choose. The State cannot mandate the way people think — that is akin to George Orwell’s “1984”. Excepting, of course, the mandated injections…
If you actually knew me, in many ways I’m about as alternative as they come… but I realize what it is to set a dangerous precedent mandating & interfering with people’s freedom to associate & do business. In other ways, I’m perhaps more hard-line Constitutional than the conservative/Republicans. That’s why I’m a Libertarian.
So, I’ve lost jobs before; but if I’m actually good enough to hire, I should have no problem getting another, this time with someone who values me & my skills & what benefits as an employee I can bring to their business.
I’m not entitled to a job — but I am entitled to start & run my own business, to be self-employed. Not only do I excel in my job that I do for others, I also own a business & I’ve done it since 1991. I’ve always said, success is the best revenge. If you or anyone have what it takes to do a good job & because of bigotry you lose it, help their competition beat them. Vote with your dollar, your efforts. Do business with those who agree with you, don’t try to force bigots to like you. It just isn’t going to happen; in fact, they’ll hate you worse for it & find another reason not to keep you. Talk to me. I choose who I work for & who I do business with. I don’t care one bit anything about a prospective employee but whether they can do the job. By the way, isn’t there something like a Gay Business Association of Rehoboth? Why not make a list of bigoted businesses & associations & boycott them? It worked for the black community…
Here’s another example: everyone’s heard of the proverbial “polish jokes”. Now, Pollacks are probably used to them, but some get upset, so they contact their representatives to pass a law for protection against discrimination because they’re Polish. Now, we’ve left off the Russians, & the Welsh, & the Jewish people. Do you see where I’m going with this? (By the way, I _do_ have some Polish relatives & I _am_ Welsh.) But instead of pushing past whatever perceptions bigots may have against me, I go to my representatives (the State) & have them place me in a handicapped category — stating publicly that I’m incompetent & need special consideration. Personally, I find that humiliating.
Frankly, I don’t need to get a “marriage license” or “permit” to have a committed long-term relationship. Why do you think that the State’s interference & involvement happened in the first place? It was to ensure that interracial marriages didn’t happen, because at the time it was illegal due to racial bigotry. Once the idea of allowing the State to give “permission” for two people to get married became accepted, it then became accepted for everybody, even after interracial marriages were legal. It’s the same old story of the camel’s nose under the tent, or how to cook a frog. It is none of the State’s business what goes on in my home, and it _IS_ my home, as yours is yours. Fight for what’s yours! Get the State OUT!
Look, I’m not trying to change anyone’s minds… you’re going to believe & think they way you want. Perhaps all I’m asking is that you think about it, and if you’d like more of the same, vote more of the same. I can guarantee you that I’m not!

So if we take the state out of marriages give me a specific proposal and what would you would do in terms of inheritance rights when people die without a will, and who will gain custody over any children?
AS for taking the government out, what would you do about people that live in areas with churches that refuse to marry them – tell them to move elsewhere even though they might otherwise be happy where they live? If businesses could discriminate then what if I am a lesbian living in small-town America and the local grocery store refuses to sell me bread and other necessities and the bank won’t let me open a checking account? What if I am an interracial couple that won’t be able to get access to a doctor because the ER doc refuses to treat people like that?
Your UTOPIA – and that is all it is – would never work.
Oh yeah – and as a German with Polish ancestry I do find your use of the word Pollacks very offensive.
Why would you want to get married in a church that doesn’t want you? Why would you want to be a member there in the first place?

Heck, the progressive write-in doesn’t even have to live in the district – the protest still counts, and at least you’d be voting your principles.
Wendy and I differ on SB121. I am more pragmatic. I would personally believe the protections need to be in place.
Not sure on the LPD’s stance. We haven’t taken an official position, and many are divided. Some want government out of the decision while others believe there is a need for the discrimination protection.
Never thought I would need to have a conversation on vaccination. There is no official LP position. Never thought there needed to be to be quite honest. What Wendy said was purely her opinion and should not reflect on the party as a whole.

Hey Jason – I live in that district and I care a lot about who gets elected, but at this point we will just get the same votes as we had before – so no loss there but, .unfortunately, also no win for the liberals. I suppose I can always hope for Booth to win and to win his House seat instead.

Wendy’s apology was probably the best you could expect and props to her for coming over to try to explain her views. This is better — I’ll remind all of the good Democrats here — than the Democratic candidate who you’d think might be interested in us knowing where she stands.
