The Looking Glass.

Filed in National by on July 1, 2009

Well, this is it. The defining moment. Watch this video.

For those that refuse to watch Fox or Glen Beck, here is the jist:

Former CIA counter-terrorism expert and bin Laden tracker Michael Scheuer seems to have become unhinged, telling Glenn Beck last night: “The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States.”

Two Things.

First, if you agree with this statement, nodding your head thinking another attack that kills untold millions this time instead of only 3,000 eight years ago will surely make Americans scared enough to embrace the neocon way again, then you hate America. Rooting for millions of Americans to die to prove a political point is precisely the definition of hating America.

Second, if you agree with that statement, you are a traitor to the United States of America, and you deserve to be arrested, tried, and put to death in as quick a manner as possible. No, you just hate America. And you are so evil that you are personally acquianted with Lucifer himself. You have tea with him every Tuesday. The rest of this post stands.

Surely even Steve Newton can see that a line has been crossed.

Every single registered Republican alive today must explicitly disown this outrageous attack against America. For this traitor Michael Scheuer presumed to speak for you. He said the only hope “we” have… Now, you can say he was saying “we” as in Americans, but I don’t see how that makes his crime of a statement any better. No, when he said “we” he was talking about Republicans. He was saying that the only hope you Republicans have is to kill 200 million Americans in a torrent of fire. He said that that was your only hope.

So if that is not your hope, please, for once, speak out. Not only here, but everywhere:

  1. Seriously, when is he considered unhinged enough that he shouldn’t have his own TV show?

Hoping for a terrorist attack that kills Americans to support your political ideology – disgusting.

  2. anonone says:

Oh, come on now, Del Dem.

You think that guy should be executed for saying that? That wasn’t even a threat; it was just wingnut extreme craziness.

Personally, I think your suggestion that this guy or anybody who agrees with him should be “arrested, tried, and put to death in as quick a manner as possible” is much much more dangerous than what he said.

Rooting for the state to execute people for thoughts or speech is truly much closer “to the definition of hating America” than anything this clown said.

  3. RSmitty says:

…and you deserve to be arrested, tried, and put to death in as quick a manner as possible.

Oh man. Did you just go there again? As bad as loon speech (apologies to the bird) is, execution for it? You’re going to end up apologizing more than T.O. by the time you are said-and-done!!! 😯

  4. Dorian Gray says:

My grandparents had an old cuckoo clock in the living roon of their home. For some reason the sound it made is now stuck in my head on a loop.

I read Scheuer book many years ago when he was still at CIA. It was published as “anonymous”. The problem with the argument is that if the US just went out and decimated every AQ outpost we’d need to basically obliterate Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, several African nations, Indonesia…. You get the idea. See, the rest of us live here, in what I call “the real world”. If you don’t consider other ramifications and consider them logically – I mean really reflect on them – you say very stupid things and look very foolish. Like Protackian foolish… Case in point… Scheuer .

  5. Delaware Dem says:

Our only hope is for Bin Laden to attack us again is not treason? I think it is. And if it is, the punishment for treason is death.

  6. jason330 says:

If Beck is not promoting treason here, Is there such a thing as treason?

What must Republicans do to be viewed as having gone too far? Maybe instead of wishing for an attack – maybe facilitiating an attack?

Maybe a Republican like Beck would have to take part in an attack for Steve Newton and other right wingers to find that he has gone too far?

  7. Delaware Dem says:

This time, RSmitty, I gave the Republicans an out. I said only if you agree that Bin Laden should attack the US again are you a traitor. If Republicans don’t wish to see America attacked again, they are perfectly fine.

  8. RSmitty says:

If he was explicit in orchestrating an attack, then he committed an act of war which is treasonous. In this case, he opened his mouth and diarreah came flowing out. It’s stinky, foul, and makes me want to puke, but put away the hangman’s noose. You do not want to open the door of execution over speech, ever.

  9. anonone says:

Yes, Jason, facilitating an attack would be treasonous. Openly wishing for one is not; regardless of how vile and disgusting such a wish is.

    Hey, RSmitty and I agree!

  10. jason330 says:

    Hilarious.

Wingnuts wish for “Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States” and DD gets scolded.

I’m thinking Mathews may be right about you.

  11. Delaware Dem says:

Ok. Surely you can agree the statement is unAmerican in the extreme, correct? I mean, after all these years of you conservatives saying liberals hated America, surely you must recognize true hatred of America when you see it, right?

Hoping that America is attacked is hating America, no?

If not, then this is YET another example of the double standard of politics: it’s ok when Republicans do it. Except I have never seen a Democrat ever go on TV and state he or she wanted Bin Laden to hit us again.

  12. I agree with A1 and RSmitty. Beck and Scheurer are vile, disgusting human beings but are protected by the 1st amendment.

  13. Dorian Gray says:

A1 is right. Making buffoonish remarks isn’t treason – no matter what they are. And he didn’t make a personal threat either.

Look, personally, I am so tired of these clips. These shows are clownish ‘entertainment’. It isn’t real… it’s a circus. It’s the same as Colbert only they pretend is real… for real. It’s fiction. Olbermann’s the same. The outrage is kind of tiresome actually, no offense.

  14. anonone says:

I said the statement was vile and disgusting and I agree that it exhibits hatred of America.

Fortunately, there are no laws in America against hating America. You might like to change that, but I don’t.

  15. jason330 says:

    DG –

You know about the overton window. I don’t think the country can laugh off these dangerous Republicans any longer.

This is the kind of Republican rhetoric that gives slightly less deranged manaics room to work.

  16. jason330 says:

Beck needs to be put down like a dog.

    Yes. It is that simple.

  17. RSmitty says:

If not, then this is YET another example of the double standard of politics: it’s ok when Republicans do it. Except I have never seen a Democrat ever go on TV and state he or she wanted Bin Laden to hit us again.

Who said it is OK? Would it make you feel better if I said I wanted to go and punch him in the mouth and then defecate all over him? My goodness, DD (and Jason330), all we said is that wishing for execution isn’t right, but somehow you translate that into thinking we agree with him? Oh, and my mother never went anywhere and suggested that Bin Laden do it, so does that make all this a double standard, too?

Yeesh. You wishing for execution over this dude’s oral diarreah is a double-standard in play, not what you put forth. This guy is vile, but the accusations you fling in defense of applying a death penalty are going wingnut, too. Just think about it.

  18. liberalgeek says:

I do not advocate for death to any American.

  19. anonone says:

Yeah, Jason, by your reasoning if some whack job goes and blows up SCCOR after reading something you wrote then you should be held responsible.

Don’t look at me when you’re being hauled off to the gallows because some jury interpreted your statements as “hating America.”

    Get a grip.

  20. Delaware Dem says:

It should be universal that these comments are vile, hateful, evil and unAmerican. I think they are treason, but will defer that point for now.

  21. ‘Bulo agrees it’s First Amendment-protected free speech. He just doesn’t understand why a national media outlet should be serving as these whackjobs’ megaphone.

  22. Agreed, ‘Bulo. Beck and Scheurer can say whatever vile thing they want, but we expect that kind of talk from a guy on the street with a megaphone, not someone with a TV show and audience of millions.

I’m curious: has there been any reaction from Faux News or prominent conservatives yet?

  23. delacrat says:

    Delaware DEM @ 11

I have never seen a Democrat ever go on TV and state he or she wanted Bin Laden to hit us again.

A Democrat would be put on a watch list, no fly list, no TV exposure list…..

  24. Delaware Dem says:

Alright fine. I updated the post.

  25. h. says:

    Jason and DD —- Neo-Libs.

  26. Delaware Dem says:

    Hey, h….

Do you agree with Beck and Schuerer?

  27. Dorian Gray says:

Yes, Jason. Overton window being that one would espouse more radical ideas so the fringe becomes closer to the mainstream. So what?

You’re right, some people don’t realize this is a “show”, some people believe in 9/11 conspiracies, some people believe in god and don’t drink beer… these people are morons. But they have always been and will always be.

Pointing it out occasionally is funny… but ad nauseaum is tiresome…

  28. Mark Wilhelm says:

Again, taking yourselves way too seriously. I did watch the video. but with my eyes and ears open. watch it again and this time please remove your head from its lowly position before you respond. The concerns are valid but getting the wrong message from that video is all too easy if you see things the way you want to. Try again grasshopper. Someday you may yet snatch the pebble of intellectual curiosity from the hand of the president. Mark Wilhelm

  29. Delaware Dem says:

I am still waiting on the condemnation of all you conservatives out there who frequent DL. You have all been silent. Do these evil enemies of America named Beck and Scheurer speak for you?

  30. Delaware Dem says:

First things first Mark. Hoping that American be attacked again is not allowable under any context and with all bodily orifices open.

  31. h. says:

Hell no, Beck is the biggest asshole out there.

There are non-violent ways to save the country.

  32. Heh. A commenter at Washington Monthly nails it:

So, he is hoping and pleading for Osama to attack us so we can… demand the government protect us from an attack by Osama attacking.

It always sounds so much clearer coming from John Cleese or Michael Palin.

  33. h. says:

….. and no, I speak for myself.

  34. Mark Wilhelm says:

Please listen carefully. He is not repeat not advocating any attack. Again read directions before you start putting things together, otherwise you get the parts all mixed up.
    Mark

  35. Mark is making excuses for it! There is no excuse!

  36. Delaware Dem says:

“The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States.”

You’re right, Mark. He is not explicitly advocating for a nuclear attack on the US. If he were, my treason comments would stand and I would like to see him put to death. No, instead he is just dancing right on that treason v. free speech line by saying a nuclear attack by Bin Laden is his hope.

  37. h. says:

The problem Mark, is that people from BOTH sides hear it the way they want to hear it. And take from it what they want.

It’s idiotic comments like this that bring out the worst in people. Yes, there will be nutjobs that shake their heads in agreement. There will also be those that use this as an opportunity to show their true partisanship and hate for the other side. Like calling them treasoners and calling for their execution.

  38. Delaware Dem says:

Yes, I tend to hate those who hope millions of my countrymen die in a nuclear terrorist attack.

    Maybe it is just me.

  39. Mark Wilhelm says:

Please respond more slowly next time after thinking. If Hitler had attacked Britian as Mr. Chamberlain was negotiating with Germany. Would WWII been the catastrophic, devastating, violently world changing event that is was? In fact no one knows. But conjecture which is what we are all so wrapped up in would lead one to the conclusion NO. So those millions world wide that died or millions more that were terribly wounded, and those millions more not born, might have been saved by those thousands killed in the attack that never came. Would you give up your life to save millions? Only you can answer that question. I beleive if the circumstances were right or wrong as would be necessary to cause that decision to even be considered, that most of us would do just that. But how many of you would sacrifice other lives to save those same millions? Only one person has the power to make such a decision. Chamberlain made the wrong decision. But for a time it looked to be the right one. Who on either side could be against “Peace in our Time” even now only radicals, “traitors” advocate against it, or those who see beyond right decisions that are so horribly wrong. The real question is how to get to Peace in our time? Mark

  40. Von Cracker says:

No DG, Olbermann is nothing like the conservative nutjob talking heads. He may raise his voice like they do, but on substance? please….

If Farrikhan had a cable tv show, then I’d agree with your equivalency.

Fox is perfecting the wink and a nod style of punditry. Too bad all that will come from it is an ever-decreasing, slowly dying-out base, while the rest of us will never be able to trust the integrity of their product.

  41. jason330 says:

    Liberalgeek & h,

You can stand around and sing Kumbaya (sp?) while Beck prays for you and your family to be killed.

    It is a free country.

  42. Your media matters guys are wacked. You distort what the guest said and then blame Beck for it. The man is saying that it will take a crisis to wake people up. He is not wishing for one. He is trying to prevent a crisis. This guy worked for the CIA. He dedicated his life to keeping us safe and now is seeing some very serious warning signs. You guys had no problem with this guy when he criticized Bush.

I find it interesting that media matters chose to cut off the parts of the interview where Beck was challenging him on some of his tone.

I watched the show. What they were saying was exactly the opposite of what you make it out to be. You can get a flavor in the clip as opposed to your post though it is obscured by the editing. I think that it is so distorted that Fox should exercise the copyright and make them use it in context or pull it down.

What they were saying is that we are not taking enough security precautions and people in charge are being lackadaisical. The fear is the only way that will change will be after an attack. Unfortunately they may be right. I hope that is wrong.

  43. jason330 says:

You would defend Beck, you loser.

  44. liberalgeek says:

Uh-oh. Jason is off the meds again.

  45. jason330 says:

I blame peacenik hippies who think they can reason with the likes of Glen Beck and David A.

  46. liberalgeek says:

I’d rather just have him in prison for the rest of his life… better?

  47. h. says:

If what Beck, Hannity, and Rush spew forth gets you that upset, you’re no better than those whackjobs that agree with them. Why can’t you just shake your head and laugh like most people.

Oh wait ….. you think Olbermann is “teh shit”. Sorry.

  48. liberalgeek says:

    New rule for Delaware Dem…

If at the end of any post, someone is dead… edit it until they are alive.

  49. anonone says:

David A is an overt totalitarian who uses words like “freedom” and “liberty” only for their propaganda value in pushing his extremist anti-human rights, anti-free press, and money-over-people agenda.

He has already announced that he will be censoring and editing comments at his discretion over at DelawarePolitics. His consistent and shameless dishonesty in his posts and comments virtually guarantee the demise of DelawarePolitics.

I, for one, will be removing it from my bookmarks and I encourage others to do the same. If you do visit the site, be sure that you understand that what has been posted in the comments section may not be what the writer originally wrote and that whole comments may have been censored by removal altogether.

  50. jason330 says:

    H.

That’s the strategy that gave the country GWB. How soon we forget.

  51. Do what you want anwhatever, I will clarify to others who have not read the post that I will not be censoring anything. If you drop the F bomb or something, you will see an F***. If you say something that crosses the line of legal defamation, which is hard to do, I am not going down with you. That comment is gone, I am retaining legal counsel just to protect me if I am sued, but I have yet to see any comments on DP that reach that level.

I am sure that DL would delete anything that opens them up to legal liability on that scale as well. My only condition is be real. That means you can tease, lampoon, disparage, or even be mean.

  52. Now guys, you say that it is a bad thing to defend Glen Beck. The problem is that you are saying that he is calling for an attack on America, when the segment was about how we avoid an attack on America.

You can not even understand why Glen Beck who comes on at 5p and 2a beats most prime time cable programs and is third in popularity of all news programs if you don’t get the true story.

You will go around thinking tens of millions of Americans are just waiting for the country to fall apart and be attacked then sweep through and establish a new regime like the Turner Diaries. No wonder DD typed such paranoid dribble. I don’t know what the mm piece said that made you think that but even that clip doesn’t say the former CIA guy wants an attack let alone Beck.

You can agree or most likely disagree with Beck, but let’s have an honest discussion or you get the typical American situation where both sides just yell past each other thinking the other is crazy.

  53. anonone says:

    David,

As one who had an on-topic post temporarily removed by you because you did not believe that it was appropriate to be published on that day, you’ll understand why I am skeptical. (You’ll remember it was a totally non-profane non-defamatory quote of Mark Twain.)

But it is your blog; you can do whatever you want. The problem is that you probably will.

  54. Dorian Gray says:

“The problem is that you are saying that he is calling for an attack on America, when the segment was about how we avoid an attack on America. ”

So another attack makes us safer. Sounds like battered wife syndrome. I broke your jaw because I love you…

Look, we already invaded Afghanistan and Iraq and drones drop bombs in Pakistan almost daily, but apparently we are still “under threat”. Think it through… stepping up the violence (what MS advocates) is assine. And to say that another attack would basically assure we all get off our asses and fight is assine.

    Protackian foolish… stop defending it.

  55. Don’t worry, you are more than welcome to drop by and comment.

As I remember it was an off topic (the post was defending President Obama’s right not to participate in some national day of prayer ceremonies while wishing that he would) anonymous comment which lacked original content, that attacked people’s faith on the national day of prayer. I received a complaint and I just delayed the publication of it a few hours so that it would be published unedited when it was not the national day of prayer.

I will not touch any other contributor’s posts. I will not bother comments based upon them except under the standard posted. I have no intention of censoring comments. I have not in the past. (Even with your Twain comment, it was only delayed 5 hours out of sensitivity. Now if a name had been attached to comment it would have stayed where it was.) I did not have the same regard for anonymous posts which lacked original content as those with names. There is no ownership.

The bottom line is that it was published without change and you have had scores of comments since then. You are more than welcomed at any time to post comments and do so anonymously or to give a credited quote. If you have more to add let’s do it at DP. DL would probably like to keep the thread about DL and its subjects.

    Thanks guys for your indulgence.

  56. DG you will either believe the truth or you won’t. The man did an entire segment with a CIA analyst who was fretting that our leaders are not taking our security seriously enough. He feared that people wouldn’t wake up until we were attacked again. That is not treason or hoping 200 million Americans die. It is so far from reality that it deserves a clarification. MM is taking a clip then knowingly saying that the context is the exact opposite of what it was.

I understand that you guys don’t watch GB. That is ok. I DVR him every day. I just watched it early this morning. I am just letting you know what he said. I have the episode on hard drive. If I thought it mattered, I would send you a dvd.

I have nothing more to add to this thread.

  57. Dorian Gray says:

You DVR Glen Beck’s show daily and admitted it… you’re right… end of chat.

  58. anonone says:

    Dave wrote:

No, Dave. It was a post of part of Mark Twain’s The War Prayer that was exactly on topic for a discussion of National Prayer Day.

So now we also know that you’re more likely to censor posts from people using pseudonyms and/or that you perceive attack people’s faith. And you also forgot to mention that you wrote “My condition is that the past disputes nor any disparagement based upon them not be continued here. They will be deleted. You have your own sites to say whatever you desire.”

Nobody can trust what you write.

  59. Eliminationist rhetoric on Delaware Liberal. Tsk tsk tsk!

Do you folks need monitoring by DHS?

  60. Ben says:

    RWR,

No. This is about being anti-terrorism, and Scheuer is an admitted terrorist sympathizer.
