    Mays style was offensive to me and that headset he wore seemed to be a silly prop. His identification with any product was a personal turnoff but a lot of others seemed to think otherwise.

    Yet an incident early in his career gave me another view of the man. When an arch-rival huckster discovered that his microphone was broken, Mays offered him his spare. Such examples of decency are all too rare and should be applauded.
